Forty thousand years ago it was a pretty wild bunch that hung out at the local watering holes around these parts.

In fact, you could say that it was an Ice Age A-list of characters who rumbled and roared and congregated in the ancient grasslands and lush pine forests throughout what is now present-day Hemet and surrounding areas. For a unique glimpse into life during the Late Pleistocene scene which ended about 12,000 years ago, take an expedition to the Western Science Museum in Hemet, located near the Diamond Valley Lake Reservoir. The museum, which opened in 2006, is home to a stunning collection of Ice Age fossils of huge mammoths and mastodons, saber-tooth cats and North American lions, giant ground sloths, dire wolves, ancient longhorned bison and extinct species of horses and camels. Not to be left out of the crowd are fossils of birds, smaller mammals such as rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and also snakes, lizards and pond turtlesall of which can be viewed up close via magnifying glasses. It was the creation of a massive new man-made watering hole that led to the discovery of nearly a million specimens in what has been coined as The Valley of the Mastodons. The excavation and construction of Diamond Valley Lake Reservoir and its three dams from 1992-1999 is considered to be the largest earthwork project in the history of the United States. Racing against time and surrounded by loud and

In doing so, they helped preserve the Diamond Valley Lake dig sites own place in history, providing a much-needed connection to the fossil deposits at La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles and Ice Age sites in the Mojave Desert. The stand-up stars of museums paleontology exhibits may be extinct, but they still inspire plenty of oohs and aahs. Rising up to the ceiling are the skeletons of Max, which, at ten feet tall, is the largest mastodon ever discovered in the western United States, and Xena, a 12-foot-tall, not-completely-grown Colombian mammoth (not of the woolly-coated variety) that lived 16,000 years ago. Belowfoot, but no less of a superstar is Little Stevie, a juvenile mastodon whose partially-buried skeleton is displayed in a pit under the museums glass floor just as it was first uncovered at the Diamond Valley Lake dig site. More than forty thousand years old, it is the most complete skeleton of a mastodon yet found in the western United States. DIVINE education
O
ne cannot drive down Temecula Parkway and not notice the expansive property that is home to Rancho Community Church. What most people may not be familiar with, however, is that the facility is also home to private education - Rancho Christian Schools. Rancho Christian Schools provide a top-notch, Christ-centered education from preschool through high school. The very first class of seniors is scheduled to graduate in 2012. The preschool began serving children ages two to six in 1981, and over the years the school has expanded into several distinct schools Sonshine Preschool, K-5, Middle School and High School. Kindergarten opened in 1994, and the high school has been adding a grade a year to reach its current status. Accredited by both the Association of Christian Schools International and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, parents and students can rest assured that the Schools are following guidelines to ensure quality in education that is recognized internationally. The schools focus on core values that are strongly Christcentered and also to the highest academic standards. The tagline for the Schools is University Ready, Life Ready. This is clearly demonstrated when you begin looking into all of the things the Schools have to offer. The academic program includes on-site AP classes as well as partnerships with local colleges, comprising what they call the Accelerated Collegiate Track (ACT). The ACT program empowers students to achieve significant college credits while still in high school, in concert with life lessons and guidance that allows RCS to succeed in graduating ...both excellent students and wise young men and women. College counseling begins for all students in the spring semester of their 8th grade year, guiding those who choose that path with more than four years of assistance and direction. All grades participate in speech meets, and there are spelling bees in grades 1-8. Grades 4-8 compete in a science fair. Rancho Christian Schools curriculum and school life focus on the Three As - Academics, Athletics and the Arts. Weve talked a little bit about the Academics - what about the Athletics? The schools promote a competitive, Christ-centered sports program that challenges student-athletes spiritually, physically and mentally, by teaching life principles that will help the studentathlete to be a productive and responsible young adult. This year has seen the first year of tackle football, and the 2012-13 school year will see the addition of high school boys baseball, girls
16 | Country Review April/May 2012

basketball, and soccer and track for all high school students. Plans for a new athletic field are underway. Middle school students participate in competitive athletic contests in basketball, boys flag football, girls volleyball, cheer, track, golf and cross country. High school students compete in basketball, boys baseball, tackle football, cross country, cheer, track and golf. In regards to the Arts, RCS offers an extensive Fine Arts program beginning in elementary grades. From theater and musical performances to art classes, music and drama, the creative student will have opportunities available to them to express their faith through the arts. Enrichment classes are available for photography, dance and pottery, just to name a few. The enrichment classes are after-school programs in a myriad of subjects. Culinary arts such as baking and candy making, martial arts such as Karate and Tae Kwan Do and a financial-planning program for teens called Financial Peace are some of the options available. There is even a class on Etiquette - truly a vanishing art. With a before- and after-school child care program, Rancho Christian Schools really has created a campus that meets and anticipates the needs of its families and students. Families are encouraged to be active in their childs education, and the schools valuate the focus on family, both at home and the church family. Throughout every part of RCS Three As is the Christ-centered teaching principles. There are weekly chapel services, and student worship teams lead the middle and high school chapels. Rhonda Sanderson, a parent at RCS, says, We have three children attending Rancho Christian School. They all started at Sonshine Preschool and my oldest is now a freshman in the high school. We have been very happy with not only the level of academics at the school and the teaching of Godly principles and Christian character, but also with the interest that the faculty and staff invest in each individual child. We have been truly blessed to be a part of this remarkable school! RCS is currently in open enrollment for the 2012-13 school year. Interested families are encouraged to call the school to schedule a tour. Dont delay - certain grades fill up quickly. The campus is located at 31300 Rancho Community Way in Temecula. 951303-1408 You can learn more about Rancho Christian Schools at their informative website, www.ranchochristian.org

Floral Perspective

ut flowers make us feel good. They help us celebrate special events and communicate emotions by saying thank you, get well, Im sorry, I love you, or even just to bring a little cheerfulness into our day. Whether you receive a nice gift of cut flowers, or you cut your own arrangement from the garden, here are a few tips to make them last longer. Most floral arrangements last 4-7 days or longer, depending on the flowers used and the care they receive. What is the best way to take care of a flower arrangement and fresh cut flowers? If you receive flowers in a container with floral foam, be certain the container is full of water every day. Using your finger, feel

under the greens for a place where water can be added. Or you can pour water slowly into the center of the arrangement, keeping a finger in the container to gauge the water level. If you receive flowers in a vase, check to be sure the water is always clear. If the water turns cloudy, empty it and add fresh water mixed with the floral food provided by Murrieta VIP Florist. If possible, trim the stems with a sharp knife before placing them in the fresh water. If you receive flowers in a box or tissue, remove all of the foliage that falls below the water line, and then cut the stems with a sharp knife. Be sure to place them immediately into a vase of warm water mixed with the floral food provided by Murrieta VIP Florist. Keep flowers in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, or directly under ceiling fans. Keep a distance from televisions or radiators as these appliances give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate. Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions. Preparing cut flowers for a long vase life begins when you gather flowers from the garden. Even if you purchase flowers for floral arrangements, proper preparation keeps them looking fresher longer. Try these tips at home and you can start enjoying the beautiful sights and smells of colorful bouquets for a greater amount of time. Once you get the hang of it, you should be able to make your flowers last longer.

Purple Passion
Just as popular today as it has been for the past 2,500 years, lavender is still considered heaven-sent by enthusiasts of the herb plants purple-hued power. Oh, I am a lavender geek! says Jan Schneider, owner of the Temecula Lavender Company which has a storefront in Old Town Temecula as well as a small growing field in the areas Wine Country. I love everything about lavender. There is such a romantic allure about itits fragrance, its oils, its healing properties. And its just so beautiful when its in bloom. That floral glory generally only bursts forth for a short season in Southern California during May, June and July, the best months for blooming, said Schneider. And distilled from that harvest are the essential oils long believed to have positive effects against stress, depression, and insomnia. Additionally, lavender oil has a long folklore history for treating other physical aches and pains, said Schneider, whose store also carries lavender-infused soaps and lotions, bath and hair care products, and candles and sachets. For example, oils from true lavendernot the hybrids has traditionally been put on burns for centuries to prevent scarring, she said, adding that there are hundreds of different varieties of lavender, and oils from each variety have different

But lavender also has place in the kitchen, said Schneider, adding that the Temecula wineries and the areas Slow Food movement are aficionados of TLCs lavender herbs and pepper. A couple of trips to France, where lavender is grown in vast amounts, inspired Schneider a few years ago to start making bath soaps and essential oil products from the cherished herb which the company grows in Temecula. The lavender entrepreneur is also planning some introductory tours of the farm this summer on a limited basis. Down the road from Temecula is Keys Creek Lavender Farm in Valley Center, a certified organic eight-acre commercial flower farm showcasing more than two dozen varieties of lavender and 45,000 plants. Open to the public for free walking tours in May and June, the farm offers a one-of-a-kind serene and incredibly fragrant experience, says owner Alicia Wolff. Some of the first things people say is that they had no idea that such a peaceful and relaxing place existed in this area, said Wolff. Not only are they grateful, but they feel like they have found a beautiful placenot in the middle of nowherebut instead at the end of nowhere. Thats what Wolff discovered herself when she encountered the farm in 2008. She fell so much in love with the place that she ended up buying it shortly afterward, and is still happily under the spell of lavender and its revered legacy. continued on page 31

PAINTING LIKE A PRO IS ALL IN THE PREP

You dont have to be a professional painter to get results like one.

Tools oF The TRade If you have all necessary tools at the ready, you wont have to leave halfway through your project because you forgot a crucial item. For latex paints, synthetic-fiber bristle brushes in a variety of flat and angled tips will take care of the trim and detail work. A good hard-core roller cover and roller cage will speed the job up and reduce the appearance of brush strokes. Dont forget a good paint tray for that roller, an extra roller cover and a 6-in-1 tool for cleaning up these items when the job is done. Its good to invest in the highest quality roller covers and brushes. These are worth the extra cost in the money and time you will save down the road. Quality roller covers will resist matting down and will hold more paint without dripping, reducing the amount of paint used and the number of coats required for even coverage. Brushes will also apply paint more smoothly, requiring fewer layers to conceal brushstrokes. Higher quality rollers and brushes resist shedding and last longer as well.

ctober is the number one month for painting, so it may be likely youve given some thought to adding a little color to your life. Preparation is nearly 90 percent of the job, so when youre ready to start the project, consider these professional tips: PRePaRing The suRFaCe Anything in the room not being painted should be removed or covered up, including furniture, light fixtures, vent covers and outlet covers. Apply a good masking tape to protect baseboards, door and window trim, crown molding and any other surfaces not receiving paint. To protect flooring, lay down a canvas or thick-mil plastic drop cloth. When painting over an existing semi- or full-gloss finish, the surface must be sanded to give the new paint something to adhere to (paint adheres better to rough surfaces than smooth ones). Smooth over cracks and other surface imperfections with spackle and a putty knife, and then sand smooth. Viewing the surface from an angle will reveal any spots that may have been missed. The entire surface to be painted should be washed with tri sodium phosphate (TSP) or a mixture of water and bleach (or other detergent) in a 2:1 ratio. This should dry completely before working with the surface again. Finally, apply a primer coat such as Ace Stain Halt to round out the prep process. Choosing a PainT Latex paints are the primary paints used for painting nonmetallic surfaces inside the home such as walls and ceilings. Be aware of the differences in finishes: Flat - Ideal for low-traffic areas; matte coating shows a colors true hue and hides imperfections well. Ace Sensations(TM) with Scotchgard(TM) Protector is the flat paint that cleans like a semi-gloss, so you can use it in higher-traffic areas. Whats more, its mold resistant, so it can be used in highmoisture areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, too! Eggshell - Smooth, washable finish with a very slight sheen; ideal for living rooms, hallways, bedrooms and dens. Satin - A bit more washable than eggshell with a similar sheen; ideal for most rooms. Semi-gloss - Smooth and washable medium sheen; ideal for bedrooms, kitchens and childrens rooms. Gloss - The highest shine of any finish, very washable; wellsuited for trimwork, doors and windows and areas that receive frequent abuse.

Where do We go from here?

by Monica Atherton, Coldwell Banker hese days a lot of good people are finding themselves in dire financial straits. Its a scary place to be and coupled with the feeling of failure on top of it, it may feel like there is no way out. The fact is that we, as a nation, are right in the middle of the biggest mortgage crisis of all time. Many homeowners were offered loans that were not in their best interest. Homes have devalued in some areas more than 50%, and things are even worse. But instead of pretending that the problem doesnt exist, we must now face reality by not only viewing the long-term impacts of our past decisions, but to also research what options are available, and which ones are the best choice for us as we look into the future. So exactly what are your options? First is a Loan Modification through The Home Affordable Refinance Program. In order to be eligible for the HARP refinance program your loan must be backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, your current mortgage must have a securitization date prior to June 1, 2009 and you must close on your mortgage prior to January 1, 2014. If your loan is not owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, but is an FHA loan, you may qualify for an FHA Streamline

Refinance. You must receive a benefit of 5% drop in your payment amongst other minimal qualifications, but it is definitely worth discussing with your mortgage professional. Remember, for these options you must be current on your mortgage. If being extremely upside down on your mortgage for many years to come is not a desirable situation, then your next option might be a Short Sale. A short sale is where the seller arranges with their mortgage lender to accept a price that is less than the amount owed on their property. Finally there is Foreclosure. Foreclosure is the legal process in which a lender repossesses a property after the owner has defaulted on their loan. Many people are finding themselves with this moral, ethical and financial dilemma. Do you try to save your home by loan modification, do you short sale your home, or do you just walk away? I think the question that needs to be answered is, what is the long term impacts of each decision for your specific situation? Each of the above mentioned scenarios come with both legal and tax implications as well as how they will affect your credit. You should contact a CPA that is well versed in the tax laws as well as a HUD counselor to discuss your options. www.monicaatherton.com

Alleviating Your Childs Asthma Symptoms

by Seema Aceves, MD

LIVE THIS SUMMER!

even million children suffer with asthma in the United States. There is no cure for asthma, but parents can be proactive in preventing, managing and alleviating their childs asthma symptoms. Although asthma attacks can be very serious, there are many ways to prevent and control symptoms. Engage with your childs physician to establish a personalized asthma management plan. Your childs written asthma management plan should describe medications and measures to take in order to ensure that asthma interferes with your childs daily life as little as possible. Every childs asthma triggers and symptoms are unique. Common asthma triggers include upper respiratory infections, mold or pollen, pet dander, dust mites, air pollution and tobacco smoke, strong perfume and cleaning products, changes in air temperature and exercise. Allergy Induced Asthma Many of asthmatics also have allergies. Allergies can trigger asthma symptoms. Its important to know what your child is allergic to and how you can prevent exposure to allergen triggers. Provide an allergen-free environment by using a HEPA filter to capture pollens and mold spores, limiting pet dander, having special dust-proof mattress and pillow covers and washing bed linens weekly in hot water, not letting others smoke in your home or car, and avoiding the use of strong scents. Exercise Induced Asthma All children need exercise to stay healthy. Children with asthma may experience coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath during or after exercise. Exercise induced asthma symptoms can be prevented by allowing your child to use their rescue inhaler before exercise. Warm-ups and cooldowns may also prevent or lessen exercise induced asthma symptoms. Exercise induced symptoms can be worse during times of high pollen and pollution levels, or when your child has a cold.

The Morning necessiTy

by Holly Humphreys-Reyes www.951fitness.com

our mornings may be hectic, the alarm may not go off, or the kids may not seem hungry first thing after waking up. Whatever your reasons may be, skipping breakfast puts your kids at a distinct disadvantage. And while you know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, approximately 40 percent of children dont eat breakfast on a regular basis. The Morning necessity Breakfast provides the fuel that is needed by all bodies to start the day. When your child wakes in the morning, his or her tank is empty and it is time to break the fast so to speak. Food gives the energy needed to function mentally and physically. Dont believe it? Consider this: Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast before school perform better on their reading and math scores, have longer attention spans, visit the school nurse less frequently, and are better behaved in class. Some kids, especially teenagers, skip breakfast because theyd rather sleep in or because they think skipping breakfast will help them lose weight. Unfortunately, skipping breakfast to lose weight is a myth. In fact, those who dont eat breakfast are more likely to have a greater body mass index (BMI) than those who do, since skipping breakfast makes kids so hungry they eat extra calories later in the day to make up for their skipped morning cuisine. easy, healthy options Why arent your children eating a healthy breakfast each day? There are plenty of easy, fast, healthy foods to have readily available for your kids to grab and eat on the go. Any food is better than no food for breakfast, but healthy foods give your kids the energy they require to make it until lunch. A great way to knock out breakfast is to handle it the night before by hard-boiling some eggs. Hard-boiled eggs are a great source of protein and are fast and easy in the morning. You can also warm up microwavable oatmeal or let the kids eat cereal bars in the car. Keep whole-grain, low-sugar cereals on hand that kids can eat with low-fat milk or yogurt. And lastly, keep fresh fruit such as apples, bananas, and pears readily available. Dont get caught eating one of these 4 things for breakfast: 1. Breakfast pastry: muffins, doughnuts, bear claws and croissants sure taste good with coffee, but all those refined carbs are going to cause unwanted weight gain. 2. Granola Bars: watch out for the breakfast bars that claim to give you fiber, vitamins and minerals. Check the number of carbs and sugars on the back of the label most contain the same sugar as a pastry. 3. Cereal: heres another popular breakfast item that has tons of sugar lurking beneath its surface. Only eat cereal that has no added sugar and that contains some protein and healthy fat. 4. Drive Thru Breakfast Sandwich: dont even think about heading to the drive thru for a quick breakfast sandwich. Instead grab a hard boiled egg from home to enjoy on your commute.

dance? grin and stance is Sammy, the skeleton of a 7-foottall giant ground sloth which also was discovered at the dig site, and has provided researchers with much information about climate change in the Diamond and Domenigoni valleys. Visitors can also settle onto stone age seats and be transported into the Ice Age animal experience in the museums circular, immersion theater. A short animated film is regularly screened during the day, and, if you are not careful, the mastodons will loom so large in front of you that you will forget that its really 2012! There is also another short documentary that provides an interesting view of the lakes excavation and dig site challenges. Dinosaur lovers might be a bit disappointed by the preponderance of Ice Age fauna showcased by the museum, but there were no dinosaur fossils found in the area of the dig site. Dinosaurs lived during the time of the Mesozoic Era which ended 65 million years ago when Riverside County and most of California were completely underwater. But knowing how fascinated the public is by the long gone reptile giants who ruled the earth, officials with the museum

have included past exhibits about dinosaurs and have upcoming plans to showcase specimens donated from the collection of the late Harley Garbani, a renowned paleontologist and archeologist who discovered some of the worlds most significant dinosaur fossils from Mexico to Montana. Garbani, a Hemet resident, found his first fossila femur of a camel from the Pleistocene Ageat a farm in the San Jacinto Valley when he was nine years old. Archeologists at the Diamond Valley dig site also uncovered a rich source of information about the lives of native Americans and early settlers in the area. Included in the exhibit gallery are displays of pottery, arrowheads, petroglyphs and a typical Southern California home in that region during the 1880s. So, go ahead, put some of that fossil fuel in your gas tank, and take a fascinating trip back in time for a mammoth amount of fun at the Western Science Museum!

Not only do we love to educate people about the healing properties of lavender, but its also great when our visitors share their own stories about how lavender healed them too, she said. Besides the free walking tours at 10:30AM and 1:30PM every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in May and June, there is a gift shop which sells a range of lavender products created at the farm; events such as High English Teas, classes and workshops and demonstrations of how the farm distills essential oils in its distillery. Coinciding with the peak of the lavender bloom season is June, the month of brides, and because of its Provence-inspired ambience, Keys Creek has become a popular site for marriage ceremonies, said Wolff. I envisioned that this would be a lovely place for weddings, she said. It has such a rustic, country charm, especially during the glorious bloom season. Every bride who had her wedding here has given us glowing reviews. And since its reputation as an aphrodisiac goes back to the days of Cleopatra herself, those glowing reviews from love-smitten brides and grooms surrounded by fields of lavender are only natural.

World record Broken By 1000 local StudentS

by Chase Harbour

he pages of the Guinness Book of World Records are filled with the astounding accomplishments of many across the globe. For some, the renown of being established as world record holder may seem to be a near unattainable feat, but the students and faculty at Lisa J. Mails Elementary School were up for the challenge. Students, teachers and volunteers all gathered on Friday, March 9 to break the record for the largest art lesson at a single venue, the current record being held by 800 students in the U.K. Spirits were high and the excitement could be seen and felt all around as nearly every student in the school found their seat in the quad area to begin preparations for the recordbreaking art lesson. Each student was given a piece of paper, a box of crayons and a task of following an abstract art lesson. The lesson, taught by teacher Mary Eskridge, was required to last no more, or less, than 30 minutes and all directions were to be followed in order to qualify for the title of record holder. Being that it was a lesson on abstract art, each student was encouraged to apply their own interpretation of the instructions that were given, and as the lesson progressed you could really see many unique works of art take shape. As the lesson started to come to a close, the concentration that had swept over the crowd of 1,000 students began to turn back into excitement. Finally, the last minute ticked away and the quiet was broken by great celebration. The entire quad area was turned into a sea of beaming smiles and as every student held their work of art in the air, all were filled with inspiration and awe. The PTA, faculty, volunteers and students all played roles in pulling this event together and everyone involved deserves incredible recognition for their hard work and perseverance. Way to go Lisa J. Mails School of the Arts....you deserve an Encore!
