FELICITY CONDITION AND SPEECH ACT : LIKE TWO PEAS IN A POT (TRANSLATED VERSION-original works by Janzbizzare)

he term discourse analysis is referred to the process of analysing language which is used in context. Discourse analysis is inextricably linked with speech acts (an utterance that serves function in communication). A speech act is not carried out properly if felicity condition does not co-exist with it as felicity condition determines to what extent the aim of speech act is fulfilled. There are 3 felicity conditions which are important in order to carry out a successfull speech act; the role of speaker, the context and the aim of discourse must be intelligible to both speaker and hearer.

Situation 1 Ali : Aku rasa aku mahu pergi beli roti canai lagilah. (I feel like having some more roti canais.) Abu : Aku pun nak pergi beli sebiji lagi ni. (Im going to get some more.) Ali : Boleh tak kau belikan aku sebiji roti canai biasa dan sebiji lagi ditambah telur?. (Could you buy me one piece of plain roti canai and one piece of egged roti canai ?) Abu : Baiklah, nanti aku belikan. (Alright, I get it for you.)
(The original situation is preserved for comparison)

In the above situation there is a request speech act Ali: Boleh tak kau belikan aku sebiji roti canai biasa dan sebiji lagi ditambah telur? (Ali: Could you buy me one piece of plain roti canai and one egged roti canai?) The intention and the context of the situation were properly understood by Ali and Abu as they were eating the same meal at that time. Ali and Abu realised the established relationship between them where they were using the first and second pronouns in Malay aku (I) and kau (you) which are only used among persons who know each other well but are not used with strangers, whereas English pronouns are nuetral as they do not emphasise the degree of relationship between a speaker and a hearer.

Situation 2 Worker A : I want you to complete the report by 5pm. Understand? Worker B : Alright. In the above situation, the worker A did not fulfill the felicity condition as he did not realise the relationship (role) with the worker B, where they were only co-workers and he was not a boss or a leader to him. Therefore, he failed to carry out the speech act sucessfully or felicitously. Janzbizzare 2012 Reference Cutting, J. (2002). Pragmatics and Discourse. A Resource Book For Students.
