TAGORE AND AMERICA In an address to the American people, later printed as Nationalism in India, Rabindranath Tagore stated, You are the country of expectation desiring something else than what is... America is destined to justify the Western Civilization to the East. The poet-philosopher visited America five times 1912-1913, 1916-1917, 1920-1921, 1929, 1930 lecturing widely at public congregations, prestigious universities and Unitarian churches, on topics as diverse as religion, aesthetics, creativity, nationalism and internationalism. On his last visit, he carried with him his paintings which were exhibited in major American cities and reviewed favourably. The Department of English, Jogamaya Devi College, in collaboration with Jadavpur University Society for American Studies, has decided to organise a seminar around the sparsely-researched theme of Tagore and America, in this 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath. Placing Tagores interaction with American intellectuals and thought in the perspective of his extended visits and the response aroused in America, we have invited research papers from colleges and universities.
