City Pool

Environmental Policy
Statement of Intent
City Pool as part of Newcastle City Council provides a direct service to the people of Newcastle upon Tyne. This policy is appropriate to the nature, scale and environmental impacts of our onsite activities. We are committed to assisting in building and supporting a safe and clean neighbourhood whilst managing the environment effectively and sustainably. Our environmental aim is to reduce the negative environmental impact of our activities and to achieve this we follow the principles of a city wide implemented Environmental Management System (EMS). This will help us to continually improve our environmental performance by implementing control measures to prevent pollution and to ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation.

Key Aims
Energy
We will assist in minimising the Citys contribution to climate change by reducing energy consumption throughout the building. We will do this by conserving energy wherever possible.

Waste
We will make every effort to reduce the amount of waste produced within the centre. We will introduce methods of recycling waste products and work at minimising the amount of waste disposed of to landfill sites.

Resources
We will increase the sustainable use of our resources wherever possible.

Biodiversity
We will assist in protecting and enhancing the Citys biodiversity.

The Natural Environment


We will assist in protecting and enhancing the Citys rural and urban landscape.

Contractors and Suppliers


We will work with approved contractors and suppliers to improve the environmental impacts of their products and services

Environmental Management Systems (EMAS)


We will implement and operate in accordance with an Environmental Management System which is certified to ISO 14001 and registered to the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).

Policies and Strategies


We will implement and comply with all Council environmental policies and procedures that are appropriate to the centre operation including Charter for the Environment, Biodiversity Action Plan, Green Space Strategy, Waste Strategy, Tree Strategy.

Each section of Neighbourhood Services will contribute to this environmental policy and its key aims. We will ensure that the policy is communicated to all employees and made available to all interested parties. Neighbourhood Services will also publish an annual statement on its environmental performance

City Pool as part of Newcastle Leisure seeks to offer opportunities to improve health and enhance the quality of life for all communities and individuals in the city.

We do this by:

Providing local sports, recreational, social, educational and sports developmental services, that are accessible and of consistently good quality. Improving the quality of life for the people in our local community and assist in playing a leading role in the sustainable growth and prosperity of the region. Deliver effective and efficient quality driven services that are value for money and accessible to all Improving educational, developmental, sporting excellence and inclusiveness for everyone to enable them to fulfil personal aspirations and sporting potential. Encouraging everyone to learn, develop skills, build self esteem, and be socially interactive. Building on and supporting the provision of friendly, welcoming, supportive, attractive, clean and safe facilities for the local neighbourhood and extended communities. Managing environmental issues effectively, efficiently and sustainably. Creating an improved quality of life for everyone by working with local people and established local partners in sharing and developing the decision making process in the provision of leisure services. Empowering staff, visitors, individuals and communities to contribute to and influence service delivery and development.

Quality statement
City Pool as part of Newcastle City Council believes in providing the best possible service for the people of Newcastle. It is the goal of both The Neighbourhood Services Division and City Pool to meet the level of service required by Newcastle City Council and the local community. We will actively engage centre customers and stakeholders by working together in a planned and methodical way to improve the service we provide. Our quality objectives and targets are detailed in divisional and site specific business plans. These are reviewed at management and staff meetings on a regular basis. This provides a framework to continually review the standards of the service we provide. It is the aim of Neighbourhood Services and City Pool to meet the expectations of our customers each and every time. The facility management and staff are proud of the quality of service we provide and we are constantly striving to make improvements in service delivery and standards. We work closely with suppliers and contractors to ensure that Newcastle City council receives value for money and provides our customers with a reliable service. It is the policy of Neighbourhood Services and City Pool to involve employees at every level to ensure that our service objectives are understood, implemented, maintained and continually improved for the benefit of everyone.

We Will!
Ensure that our facility programme reflects the needs and aspirations of the community it serves. Ensure that our facilities and services are accessible to all particularly more vulnerable people and communities i.e. people with a disability, ethnic minority communities and those people more prone to economic and social disadvantage. Ensure that our facilities are clean, safe, friendly, welcoming, supportive, attractive and interactive in meeting the needs of the local neighbourhood and extended communities. Ensure that our agreed standards of performance and service delivery are displayed in all main areas of the centre and are reviewed and updated on a regular basis. Maximise the use of all our facilities whilst retaining a balanced programme. Consult our users and our catchment communities on a regular basis. Empower our staff and centre visitors to contribute to and influence service delivery and development. Create sustainable links between our facilities and services and key agencies within their catchments e.g. schools, GPs, clinics, hospitals, sports clubs. Ensure that all facilities receive adequate maintenance to ensure a sustainable future and that they are kept clean, fit for purpose and safe.

Our customer service promise and policy
Ensure that all areas of the centre are checked on a regular basis throughout the day with regard to standards and performance. Findings of in-house inspections are recorded to ensure the highest standards, are met at all times. Ensure that all staff receive the appropriate training relating to their area of work and that all are encouraged to pursue additional skills and qualifications that will assist their further development and the sections business. Continue to establish a user forum and youth forum in order to consult on a regular basis with, centre users, non users, local residents community groups and young people. Undertake business improvements and review in readiness for continuous external assessment and accreditation to Quest facilities Management Award, BS EN ISO 9000/2000 and environmental quality standards EMAS AND WEEE regulations. Establish bench marking partners both locally and nationally in all aspects of provision and development. Continue with our very successful staff training and personal development programme and staff inclusion in centre development. Relay service information to staff and customers on all aspects of our service and service delivery.

General housekeeping standards
All areas of our facility should be clean, tidy, safe and fit for purpose at all times. Regular cleaning and inspection by facility staff will be carried out throughout the day. Details of cleaning and inspection are available upon request. Additional cleaning and general maintenance will be carried out as required following regular monitoring. Activity areas will be prepared and equipment set out as required prior to class start times. Equipment should be clean, safe, fit for purpose and in good working order at all times. We will do our very best to meet recommended environmental and temperature levels throughout the facility at all times.
