K OPENING ACT: The 2011 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals have opened their 121st season of play in the National League with a division-leading 3-1 mark, defeating the Miami Marlins 4-1 last Wednesday night and taking 2-of-3 at Milwaukee over the weekend. K NEW SKIPPER: Mike Matheny became the 49th manager in St. Louis Cardinals team history when he was named to the position on November 14, 2011...Matheny was a catcher for the Cardinals from 2000-04...at 41 years, the Reynoldsburg, OH native is the youngest active manager in the majors. K HIT PARADE: The Cardinals lead the N.L. with their .327 BA, 49 hits and 24 runs scored...they have collected 13 or more hits in three of their first four games. Shelby Miller (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs on seven hits covering 3.0 innings, striking out four while throwing 63 pitches. Adron Chambers was 2-for-5, while Pete Kozma drove in the lone run while posting a 1-for-3 game. Barret Browning (2.0 IP), Adam Reifer (1.0 IP) and Maikel Cleto (1.0 IP) each had scoreless relief outings.

Springfield greeted Midland (Athletics) with a 13-5 shellacking at Hammons Field to start a new series on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals scored 13 runs on 12 hits including six extra base hits. Oscar Taveras was 3-for-5 with a home run (1), double, three RBI and two runs scored. Kolten Wong was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a double and two RBI. Xavier Scruggs also homered (1). Kevin Thomas (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief. Michael Blazek started and allowed five runs over four innings in a no decision.
