San Diego Padres (1-3) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (3-0)

RHP Edinson Volquez (0-1, 3.60) vs. RHP Trevor Cahill (first start) Tuesday, April 10, 2012 Petco Park Game 5 Home Game 5 1090 AM 860 AM FSSD

VS. THE DIAMONDBACKS: The Padres kick off a three-game series against the Diamondbacks tonight that will close out the Friars opening homestand...San Diego went 7-11 against the 2011 NL West champs last year, including a 5-4 mark at Petco Park...over the last two years, the Padres have gone a 13-5 at home vs. Arizona, with the pitching staff posting a 2.85 ERA (52 ER/164.0 IP) and 8.6 strikeouts per 9.0 IP over that stretch. LAST TIME OUT: San Diego snapped its season-opening skid, winning 8-4 over the Dodgers on Sunday...Clayton Richard picked up the win, improving to 5-1 lifetime against LAD...he retired the first nine batters he faced and allowed only two unearned runs in his 7.0 innings of work...the Friars offense was powered by Andy Parrinos first career home run and Chase Headleys second career grand slam. SNAP OUT OF IT: Chase Headleys grand slam on Sunday snapped an 0-for-12 streak to start the season...the last Padre to belt a grand slam for his first hit of the season was Aaron Cunningham on 6/15/10 vs. TOR...despite going 1-for-13 over the first weekend of the season, Headley has managed to reach base via walk on five occassions, and is posting a .333 on-base percentage...his five walks have each come in the last two games (two on Saturday, three on Sunday). STEADY AS SHE GOES: Jesus Guzman is the only Padre to have hit safely in each of the clubs first four games, tallying one hit in each tilt so far...Guzman hit .308 (20-for-65) this Spring, belting six home runs while collecting 14 RBI...his home run total was second in the Cactus League to Albert Pujols seven...since joining the Padres in 2011, Guzman has hit .308 (81-for-263) with 24 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 47 RBI and 35 runs scored in 80 games...he has hit safely in 55 of his 78 games with at least one at-bat and has posted a .365 on-base percentage and .471 slugging percentage since making his Padres debut. ON THE HILL: Edinson Volquez takes the hill for his second start of the season tonight...he was tagged with the loss in his first start, making his second career Opening Day start (also 2011 for CIN)...tonight he is making his fourth career start against ARI, his first since 2010...he is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA against the Diamondbacks but has averaged 10.4 strikeouts per 9.0 IP with 20 in his 17.1 innings of work... Volquez is looking to snap a five-decision losing streak that dates back to 7/5/11. I DONT BELIEVE WEVE MET: Tonight the Padres will face Trevor Cahill, who is making his 97th career start but his first ever against San Diego...in fact, Orlando Hudson (2-for-4) and Jason Bartlett (1-for-1) are the only Padres currently on the active roster to log plate appearances against Cahill in his career. FAMILIAR FOE: The players on the Padres active 25-man roster have combined to hit .248 (241for-970) off Diamondbacks pitching in their career...leading that group are Chase Headley (.282, 57for-202), Nick Hundley (.303, 37-for-122), Chris Denorfia (.355, 22-for-62) and Jesus Guzman (.275, 11-for-40)...for Hundley, a former University of Arizona Wildcat, his 37 hits against the Diamondbacks are his most against any opponent. BULLYING PEN: San Diego relievers have combined to allow five runs over their 16.1 innings of work in the first four games of the season, posting a 2.76 ERA...over the four games, Micah Owings (3.1), Andrew Cashner (3.0), Luke Gregerson (1.0), Huston Street (1.0) and Joe Thatcher (0.1) have each worked scoreless ball...the Padres bullpen limited the Dodgers to a .200 clip (11-for-55) with 11 strikeouts over the opening series. THE MISSION CONTINUES: Prior to tonights game, the Padres will honor The Mission Continues... once again in 2012, the Padres Foundation will highlight and honor one charity partner per homestand...the Mission Continues was selected as the first featured charity because of its commitment to helping post-9/11 veterans rebuild a sense of purpose at home through community service...coming up in the second homestand, on April 22, The Mission Continues Bravo Class will take their Fellowship Oath at Petco Park on Military Opening Day, marking the first time that the Fellowship Oath has been taken publicly. 11,000 PADRES: The Little League season has kicked off in San Diego, with players all over the county sporting their new Padres uniforms thanks to the clubs Youth Baseball Initiative...the program has supplied over 11,600 Little Leaguers with Padres uniforms, representing 20 different styles from throughout the clubs history.
