Baners Ag B1 World Hunger Journal and Class Preparation Causes of insufficient food supplies and starvation in the world. The causes of hunger are related to poverty. Hunger is more than just the result of food production and meeting demands. Some of the following causes are directly related to hunger: Land and rights and ownership (who control the land), diversion of land use to non-productive use( tobacco industry, tea and coffee plantations, dam projects, beef and fast food industries using peoples resources, sugar cane and pineapple growing , increasing use of synfuels), increasing emphasis on export-oriented agriculture (while local people may be going hungry, they are growing food to export for the hard cash that would be earned), inefficient agricultural practices, war, famine, drought, over-fishing, poor crop yield, lack of democracy and rights. Extent of world hunger, how many people in the world don't get enough food/nourishment? 9 million people die worldwide every year; 5 million are children. Where is the greatest problem? Poverty is the biggest problem when it comes to hunger in the world. Solving wold hunger in the conventional sense ( of providing/growing more food etc.) will not tackle poverty that leads to hunger in th fist place. Further, there is a risk of continuing the poverty and dependency with out realizing it, because the act of attempting to provide more food etc. can appear so altruistic in motive. To solve world hunger in the long run, poverty alleviation is required. What are some of the side effects of hunger? People who do not get enough food often experience hunger , and hunger can lead to malnutrition over the long term. People who go hungry all the time are likely to be underweight, their growth may be stunted. Malnutrition at an early age leads to reduce physical and mental development during childhood. It's the world's greatest single cause of mental retardation and brain damage. A malnourished person has a weakened immune system, making her/him more vulnerable to infection. Chronic hunger deprives of he essential proteins, micro-nutrients and fatty acid needed to grow adequately. Globally, it is estimated that nearly 226 million children are stunted. In addition, stunted children score significantly lower on intelligence test than do normal children. For nearly 67 million children who weigh less than they should due to chronic hunger and malnutrition, completing school is an unlikely reality. Studies have shown that underweight children will provably spend fewer years in school, which, in turn, has a measurable inpact on how much they earn in adulthood. What is the difference in how poverty is defined in United States vs. the Wold. In the united states the average poor American lives in a house or department, has amenities such as indoor toilets. Poor are likely to own common appliance such as television and refrigerators. As a group the poor are far from being chronically hungry and malnourished. Poor persons are more likely to be overweight. Nealy half of the poor adult women are overweight. Most poor children are in fact super-nourished compare to children in undeveloped countries. Poor people in United states has access to basic needs. Clean water. Emergency doctor visits. Some of the best solutions to relieve world hunger will be to educate people in under develop countries. Also one solution should be to educate people here in United States about food preservation, and how to throw less food away. In average a pound of food per person is thrown away every day. A country with out educated people is a poor country. It is our problem because world hunger affects every one of us. By contributing to end hunger we may prevent wars and the inflation of commodities.
