Why did you decide to run for this office? I ran for this office because I am committed to cracking down on fraud and abuse in Oregons Initiative process, I believe we need to get the biggest bang for the buck with aggressive performance auditing and because it is critical that we make it as easy as possible to engage all eligible Oregonians in the political process. I am running for reelection, because while we have made excellent progress, there is still more work to be done. 2. How much will your primary campaign cost? We expect to be able to run a very efficient and cost-effective Primary campaign with very little spending beyond basic campaign infrastructure, compliance, printing and a small staff. 3. Key endorsements you have received: SEIU Local 49, SEIU Local 503, AFSCME Oregon, Oregon AFL-CIO, Oregon Education Association, Basic Rights Oregons Equality PAC, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon, ILWU, United Steelworkers, UFCW555, AFT, OSEA, Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, EMILYs List

4. Have you ever been convicted of a crime, been disciplined by a professional licensing board/organization or had an ethics violation filed against you? If so, please give the details. Not that I am aware of. 5. Have you ever filed for bankruptcy, been delinquent on your taxes or other major accounts, or been sued personally or professionally? If so, please give the details. In my role as lawyer, I was sued in 1991. The matter was settled out of court. 6. Why should people vote for you? What separates you from your opponent(s)? Be specific. I believe that Primary voters should support me because Ive lived up to my commitments and done the very important work of protecting the integrity of our elections, holding our government accountable and helping Oregon businesses grow and create jobs. 7. What are the three most important issues you would address if elected? How? (75 words for each issue) A. First and foremost, the Secretary of State must protect the integrity of our elections. Ive cracked down on fraud and abuse in the ballot initiative process and worked to engage more Oregonians in the electoral process. The online voter registration system I implemented allows voters easier access to registration while improving the security and accuracy of our voter roles. The system is also extremely cost-effective. B. As the States chief auditor, it is critical that we take a tough look at how effectively and efficiently taxpayer dollars are spent. In 2010 alone, my Audits Division returned about 64 dollars for every dollar spent on performance auditing. These audits will continue to be a top priority of mine if re-elected to a second term. C. The other critical issue for me is helping Oregon businesses. We are expanding our Central Business registry to include licensing agencies and local governments. We were given the resources to build the States business portal to make it as easy as possible for business owners to access the tools and resources they need to start or expand their businesses in Oregon and create jobs. 8. What do you see as other important issues? Ill work, as a member of the Land Board, to ensure that we make smart decisions with our natural resources, preserving the environment while maximizing funding for the Common School Fund.

In our Audits Division, we will focus on two critical areas education and workforce development. For example, were looking at Community College GED Programs to make sure they meet the needs of the 300,000+ adult Oregonians that dont have a high school diploma or GED. 9. What magazines, newspapers and Web publications do you regularly read to keep up on the news and developments in your areas of interest? I read the Oregonian and articles from the major papers around the State. I also regularly read the newspapers from a number of Oregons tribes. I watch Washington Week in Review, read Newsweek and a number of periodicals. My favorite is Governing Magazine. I read reports from organizations like the Pew Center and the Brennan Center and various books on leadership. 10. Any skeletons in your closet or other potentially embarrassing information that you want to disclose before it comes up in the campaign? No skeletons.
