San Diego Padres (1-4) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (4-0)

LHP Cory Luebke (0-1, 9.64) vs. LHP Joe Saunders (first start) Wednesday, April 11, 2012 Petco Park Game 6 Home Game 6 1090 AM 860 AM FSSD

VS. THE DIAMONDBACKS: The Padres continue a three-game series against the Diamondbacks today that will close out the Friars opening homestand...San Diego went 7-11 against the 2011 NL West champs last year, including a 5-4 mark at Petco Park...dating back to 2010, the Padres have gone a 13-6 at home vs. Arizona, with the pitching staff posting a 2.88 ERA (56 ER/175.0 IP) and 8.6 strikeouts per 9.0 IP over that stretch. LAST TIME OUT: San Diego dropped its second extra-inning contest, losing 4-2 to the Diamondbacks last night...after surrendering two in the first, Edinson Volquez and four relievers combined to throw shutout ball over the next 9.0 frames before Chris Young connected for a two-run shot in the 11th... Micah Owings was tagged with the loss, allowing his first runs on the season. LONG DIVISION: The Padres are in the middle of a stretch in which they play 13 straight games against NL West opponents to start the season...their first non-NL West matchup does not come until they open the next homestand against the Philadelphia Phillies. ON THE HILL: Cory Luebke takes the hill today for his second start of 2012...he finished the 2011 campaign with a 6-10 record and 3.29 ERA (51 ER/139.2 IP) over 46 outings (17 starts)...the left-hander began the season making 29 relief appearances before moving to the starting rotation...as a starter, he went 5-8 with a 3.31 ERA (37 ER/100.2 IP) and a .218 opponent batting average...over the course of the season, he limited opponents to a .209 average overall, the fifth-best ever by a Padres pitcher with 100-or-more innings and the best ever by a Padres rookie...this offseason, the club rewarded his performance with a contract extension through 2015 with club options for 2016 and 2017. WALK THIS WAY: The Padres have walked a Major League-leading 30 times over the first five games, including 26 free passes in the last three games (10 on Saturday, 8 on Sunday, 8 last night)...they are averaging a walk every 6.63 plate appearances...by comparison, the average Major League team has walked just 15 times and is drawing a base on balls every 12.06 plate appearances. FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARENT EVERYTHING: The Padres have started the season at 1-4 for the fifth time in franchise history...the last time the club started with a 1-4 mark, they went on to finish 88-74 and claim the NL West title (2006). SNAP OUT OF IT: Chase Headley connected for a grand slam on Sunday and followed up with a double last night, snapping an 0-for-12 streak to start the season...despite going 2-for-17 over the first five games of the season, Headley has managed to reach base via walk on six occassions, and is posting a .348 on-base percentage...his six walks have each come in the last three games (two on Saturday, three on Sunday, one last night) and rank tied for the Major League lead...in fact, Headley has walked more times than the Pittsburgh Pirates has as a team (five walks in four games). STEADY AS SHE GOES: Jesus Guzman went 0-for-5 last night, snapping a short four-game hitting streak to start the season...he had been the only Padre to hit safely in each of the clubs first four games, tallying one hit in each tilt...Guzman hit .308 (20-for-65) this Spring, belting six home runs while collecting 14 RBI...his home run total was second in the Cactus League to Albert Pujols seven...since joining the Padres in 2011, Guzman has hit .302 (81-for-268) with 24 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 48 RBI and 35 runs scored in 81 games...he has hit safely in 55 of his 79 games with at least one at-bat and has posted a .358 on-base percentage and .463 slugging percentage since making his Padres debut. FAMILIAR FOE: The position players on the Padres active 25-man roster have combined to hit .246 (247-for-1,005) off Diamondbacks pitching in their career...leading that group are Chase Headley (.282, 58-for-206), Nick Hundley (.296, 37-for-125) and Chris Denorfia (.365, 23-for-63)...for Hundley, a former University of Arizona Wildcat, his 37 hits against the Diamondbacks are his most against any opponent. BULLYING PEN: San Diego relievers have combined to allow seven runs over their 20.1 innings of work in the first five games of the season, posting a 3.10 ERA...over the five games, Andrew Cashner (3.0), Luke Gregerson (1.2), Huston Street (2.0) and Joe Thatcher (0.2) have each worked scoreless ball...the Padres bullpen has limited opponents to a .188 clip (13-for-69) with 14 strikeouts to start the season. 11,000 PADRES: The Little League season has kicked off in San Diego, with players all over the county sporting their new Padres uniforms thanks to the clubs Youth Baseball Initiative...the program has supplied over 11,600 Little Leaguers with Padres uniforms, representing 20 different styles from throughout the clubs history.
