After serving the community for over 15 years, the board, staff and director of One Touch Ministry (OTM) realized there was a need to provide, after release from prison, fundamental instruction in basic skills and knowledge. Post-Release Re-entry ProgramChanging Lives employs many elements already used on an individual basis as a part of the regular OTM program. Successful reduction in recidivism, evidenced in the OTMs history, needs to be instituted and available beyond just the participants of One Touch Ministry. The program aspires to reduce the recidivism rates and as a result make Baton Rouge a safer community. Yet the goal is not just to touch the lives of those that spent time in prison, but also in some cases, prevent incarceration due to probation/parole violations. It also provides a tool for the courts to use in lieu of rst time incarceration. The program is designed to complete ve main actions in each course: Assess, talk, demonstrate, teach, and guide. Fees for the classes are $50 per month (less than $3.25 per hour) Partners in the program are the La. DPS&C, Division of Probation & Parole (East and West Baton Rouge Districts).

Post-Release Re-entry ProgramChanging Lives

Coping with everyday living can be daunting for ex-offenders, and this is more evident with those that have completed long-term sentences. Nevertheless, even those that have spent just a few months behind bars or just a few nights may lack many, if not all of the essential skills associated with living a productive, tax-paying, law-abiding lifethey simply never learned how and/or had no role models to emulate. Gary* served fteen years. He had no idea that he should shut off the water after washing his hands, or turn out the light when leaving a room. These things a y ears. were not his responsibility for many yea many years.

Frank* did 25 years in prison. When trying to put on a seat belt, he thought something was wrong with it and ducked under the shoulder harness. Before his incarceration, shoulder harnesses were not common in cars. Mark* was in prison for 13 years. He went in to Walmart to purchase steel toe boots. He wandered around in the 200,000 square foot store and was overwhelmed by the choices offered; he could not even gure out where the shoe department was. He was too intimidated to ask any employees or customers where the shoes were, and he left. These are just three examples of how crippling incarceration can be, sometimes in very different ways. It is rare indeed for ex-offenders to have all the life- and soft-skills they need upon release. *pseudonym
