FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Inner-city Communities hold Town Hall to Solve Alyth Yard Pollution in Calgary The City of Calgary Established Community Planning department have hired the consultants to conduct an Environmental Monitoring of Alyth Yard and Surrounding Area. This long awaited Alyth Yards study is being conducted by 2 groups: Millennium EMS Solutions Ltd. will monitor and develop technical solutions and strategies to mitigate the noise, air pollution and vibration issues, while Brown & Associates Planning Group will deal with the soft science issues such as the facilitating the town hall and publishing the updates. The first phase includes a Town Hall scheduled for Tuesday, April 17 at 7 pm at the Inglewood Community Hall (1740 24th Ave SE). This Town Hall will give the consultants the chance to hear what the health effects are from residents in the inner-city communities that are directly affected by the issues of noise, air pollution and vibrations coming from CP Rails operations at Alyth Yards. These communities include: Inglewood and Ramsay and the escarpment communities of Albert Park, Southview and West Dover. Lots of volunteer hours and effort been put in thus far and its important to be at this stage with all the stakeholders coming together. Says Inglewood resident L.J. Robertson. At the Town Hall, a brief history of the issues and need for the study will be presented followed by stakeholder roundtable interviews to discuss the issues. The data gathered will be used as one input to shape the methodology to conduct the environmental monitoring of the noise, air pollution and vibration noise in phase 2. Fully half the cost of this $150,000 study will be spent on the environmental monitoring in phase 2.

The mitigation measures will be determined after phase 2 and be presented in a final report that is expected in October 2012. Updates after each phase will be delivered to the community in the Inglewood newsletter. We need to co-exist with the rail yard, so this is all about both sides being good neighbours with each other. says Inglewood resident Guido Van Rosendaal. This Alyth Yards Study builds on Inglewoods long history of social activism and civic engagement. Residents challenged the civic administration in the early 1970s when Inglewood was threatened with obliteration by city planning that would have turned the area into freeways. In 1973, the community published the Inglewood Design Brief which set out guidelines for the revitalization of Inglewood and its sister community, Ramsay, in an urban, mixed-use context. More recently, the Inglewood Design Initiative, a framework for guiding redevelopment efforts in this inner-city area was released in 2011. The IDI document was several years in the making and included an extensive consultation phase with community stakeholders to identify a vision, values and objectives to guide future development. It is with relentless activism by committed Inglewood residents who engaged the Aldermans office to initiate and fund this vital study. As such, you can expect a strong turnout of residents to this critically important opportunity to participate in the Alyth Yards Study Town Hall on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 pm at the Inglewood Community Hall (1740 24th Ave SE).
