Max. Marks: 100

1. 2. 3.

In What way silent chain is better than ordinary driving chain? List a few important factors upon which the selection of a belt drive depends. How does a hoisting chain differ from a roller chain?

4. A pair of worm gears is designated as 2/54/10/5. Find the gear ratio. 5. What do you mean by In which gear drive, self-locking is available? 6. If the radial force component of the bevel gear is 1200N. Determine the axial component of the pinion in the gear drive. Also write down the relation between axial force and tangential force component. 7. 8. 9. What does the ray diagram of a gear box indicates? What is the function of spacers in a gear-box? What is meant by a self-energising brake?

10. What are the desirable properties of friction material ?

PART B(5 16 = 80 MARKS)

11 (a).Design a belt drive to transmit 110 kW for a system consisting of two pulleys of diameters 0.9 m and 1.2m respectively, for a center distance of 3.6m, belt speed of 20 m/s and coefficient of friction 0.3.There is a slip of 1.2% at each pulley and 5% friction loss at each shaft with 20% overload. Or (b) The reduction of speed from 360rpm to 120 rpm is desired by the use of chain drive. The driving sprocket has 10 teeth. Find the number of teeth on the driven sprocket. If the pitch radius of the driven sprocket is 250 mm and the center distance between the two sprockets is 400 mm, find the pitch and length of the chain. 12. (a) A motor shat rotating at 1440 rpm has to transmit 15 kW power to a low speed shaft rotating at 500 rpm. A 200 pressure angle involute tooth gear pinion is used. The pinion has 25 teeth. Both gear and pinion are made of cast iron having allowable strength of 55 N/mm2. Design a suitable gear drive Or

(b) A pair of helical gears are to transmit 15 kW. The teeth are 20 0 stub in diametral plane and have a helix angle of 450. The pinion runs at 16,000 rpm and has 80 mm pitch diameter. The gear has 320 mm pitch diameter, If the gears are made of cast steel having allowable static strength of 100 MPa. Determine a suitable module and face width from the static strength consideration and check the gears for wear, given . 13. (a) Deign the teeth of a pair of bevel gear to transmit 18.75 kW at 600 rpm of the pinion. The velocity ratio should be about 3 and the pinion should have about 20 teeth which are full depth 200 involute. Find the module, face width, diameter of the gears and pitch cone angle for both the gears. Or (b) Design a warm gear drive with a standard center distance to transmit

7.5 kW from a warm rotating at 1440 rpm to a warm wheel at 20 rpm

14. (a) A nine speed gear box, used as a head stock gear box of a turret lathe, is to provide a speed range of 180 rpm to 1800 rpm. Using standard step ratio, draw the speed diagram and the kinematic layout. Also find and fix the number of teeth on all gears. Or (b) A 14 speed gear box is required to furnish output speeds in the range of 125 to 2500 rpm. Draw the speed diagram and the kinematic arrangement. 15. (a) A rope drum of an elevator having 650 mm diameter is fitted with a brake drum of 1m diameter. The brake drum is provided with four cast iron brake shoes each subtending an angle of 450. The mass of the elevator when loaded is 2000 kg and moves with a speed of 2.5 m/s . The brake has a sufficient capacity to stop the elevator in 2.75 meters. Assuming the coefficient of friction between the brake drum and shoes as 0.2, find (i) Width of shoe, if the allowable pressure on the brake shoe is limited to 0.3 N/mm2 and (ii) Heat generated in stopping the elevator. Or (b) A single plate clutch, effective on both sides, is required to transmit 25 kW at 3000 r.p.m. Determine the outer and inner diameters of frictional surface if the coefficient of friction is 0.255, ratio of diameters is 1.25 and the maximum pressure is not to exceed 0.1 N/mm2. Also, determine the axial thrust to be provided by springs. Assume the theory of uniform wear.
