Davao del Sur vs. Davao City 2000-2004

First Quarter 2006

Gross National Product &
Gross Domestic Product by Industrial Origin

Gross Value Added in Agriculture, Fishery and

Forestry
AFF rebounds in the first quarter
Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry, which accounted for 20.3 percent of total GDP,
rebounded as it reported gains in production, contributing 0.79-percentage point to the total
GDP growth. Driving the sectors growth were Corn, Palay, Fishery and Banana. Poultry
and Other Crops, on the other hand, pulled down growth during the quarter.
Palay and corn regain strength
Palay bounced back with a substantial growth of 6.9 percent in the first quarter of 2006
from the negative 1.5 percent recorded in 2005. This was largely attributed to the
expansion in harvest area and higher yield per area as a result of the wider use of quality
seeds and favorable weather conditions which prevailed during the period. Corn made a
hefty recovery with a remarkable growth of 22.1 percent compared with the output shortfall
of 18.3 percent last year with the expansion in harvest area and improved productivity. It
benefited from the governments provision of technical assistance to farmers, wider use of
hybrid seeds and better weather conditions. Sugarcane production picked up from negative
4.3 percent to a modest growth of 1.5 percent, boosted by higher prices and the increase in
the countrys export quota to the US.
Banana jumped to 14.6 percent from 3.4 percent as increased demand for the export of
banana encouraged the expansion of banana plantations in Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur,
Davao City, Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental. Coconut production continued to
grow by 2.1 percent from 4.9 percent with sustained local demand and improved prices of
Copra. Meanwhile, Other Crops improved with a lower negative growth of 1.0 percent
from negative 2.6 percent in the previous year as production in Pineapple, Cassava, Camote
and Rubber increased.
Livestock grew by 2.2 percent in the first quarter of 2006 from a marginal growth of 0.3
percent in the previous year. Growth was attributed to increased inventory and number of
slaughtered hogs and goats; and improved dairy production from cattle and carabao.
Poultry declined to negative 3.7 percent from a growth 6.7 percent growth in the same
period last year, weighed down by the substantial loss in broiler production from
commercial farms and duck and duck egg production.

Fishery sustains favorable performance

Fishery production continued to post gains, as it grew by 4.7 percent in the first quarter of
2006 from 5.3 percent in the previous year. Aquaculture led the industrys growth as a
result of improved management practices in milkfish culture in Region 3 and the rise in the
production of seaweeds in Maguindanao. Similarly, the abundance of certain fish species
and the strict implementation of fishery laws in Palawan resulted in higher municipal fish
catch during the period. On the other hand, commercial fishing suffered setbacks in
production due to the high cost of fuel which adversely affected the number of fishing trips,
the fish scare in Sorsogon caused by the Lafayette tail mining spills and reduced fishing
efforts in Western Visayas due to frequent rains and rough seas.
Forestry recovers from shortfall
Forestry surged to a growth of 46.4 percent in the first quarter of 2006, reversing its trend
from its shortfall of 55.6 percent in 2005
