Abstract
E-Banking is a major invention that has changed the business of banking. World over banks are reorienting their strategies towards new opportunities offered by e-banking. The recent trend shows that most brick and mortar banks are shifting from a product-centric model as they develop their new e-banking capabilities. With this background an attempt was made with the Objectives; to present an overview of e-banking services offered by both public and private sector banks in Coimbatore city; to examine the socio-economic profile of e-banking user; to study the extent awareness and the usage of e-banking Services and to ascertain the customers satisfaction about various e-banking services. The data was collected with the help of a well structured and pre-tested interview schedule, administered to 100 e-banking users during the period November 2008 to January 2009. The data collected was tabulated and analyzed by using simple percentages, Chi-square test and Garrett ranking technique. From the findings of the study, it was revealed that customers are satisfied with the services provided by the public sector banks than the private sector banks. The study suggests that, Customers have to be educated in the use of every new technology. On the whole e-banking increased operational efficiencies and reduces costs, besides giving a platform for offering valued added services to the customer, thereby fulfilling all the essential prerequisites for a flourishing banking industry. In a nutshell, to meet the emerging challenges banks have to undertake a series of changes in original, structure, functions, practices and marketing to popularize e-banking. Introduction
The banking scenario in the country in the post liberalization and deregulated environment has witnessed sweeping changes. The tremendous advances in technology and the aggressive infusion of information technology had brought in a paradigm shift in banking operations. For the banks, technology has emerged as a strategic resource for achieving higher efficiency, control of operations, productivity and profitability. For customers, it is the realization of their Anywhere, Anytime, Anyway banking dream. This has prompted the banks to embrace technology to meet the increasing customer expectation.

Technology to start with is a business enabler and now has become a business driver. The banking institutions cannot think of introducing a financial product without Information technology support be it customer service, transactions, remittances, audit, marketing, pricing or any other activity in the banks. Information Technology plays an important role not only to complete the activity with high efficiency but also has the potential to innovate and meet the future requirements. Information Technology has therefore introduced new business paradigms and is increasingly playing a significant role in improving the services in banking industry. In the above backdrop it becomes imperative to dwell on the evolution of Information Technology in banks before embarking on the various aspects of e-banking. Information Technology came into picture as early as in the 1980s in banking industry through the Rangarajan Committee recommendations and banks have given utmost importance to the technology since the last 25 years. The Reserve Bank of India is constantly pursuing the banks from 1980s to introduce computerization at branch level and to improve the quality of customer service through technology. E-Banking implies performing basic banking transaction by customers round the clock globally through electronic media. Alternatively electronic banking can be defined as delivery of banks services to a customer at his office or home by using electronic technology and this has resulted in conceptualization of virtual banking. In traditional banking, the customer has to visit the branch of the bank in person to perform the basic banking operations viz., account enquiry, fund transfer, cash withdrawal etc. The brick and mortar structure of a bank is essential to perform the banking functions. On the other hand, E-Banking enables the customers to perform the basic banking transactions by sitting at their office or at homes through PC or LAPTOP. The customers can access the banks website for viewing their account details and perform the transactions on account as per their requirements. Thus, todays banking is no longer confined to branches. Customers are being provided with additional delivery channels which are more convenient and are cost effective to the banks. This has resulted in shrinking of geographical boundaries, easy reach to the clientele, reliable and secure services. Internet Banking
Internet banking is the latest in the series of technological wonders in the recent involving use of internet for delivery of banking products and services. The Second Rangarajan Committee constituted in 1988 drew up a detailed perspective plan for computerization of banks and for extension of automation to other areas like Funds Transfer, E-mail, Bank net, Swift, ATMs, Internet banking etc. Internet banking products and services can be divided into two parts namely: I) Internet banking services for customers II) Internet banking for effective EPayments and E-Remittances.
Mobile Banking
Mobile communication devices are revolutionizing banking transactions over wireless networks and the internet to attract and retain customers, banks need to extend their full range of services across a wide range of mobile, wireless devices without having an impact on their current infrastructure and delivery channels it currently supports. Wireless networks, mobile gateways all play an important role in bringing mobile banking strategy to the market.

Literature Studies
In the recent years there has been explosion of Internet based electronic banking applications (Liao & Cheung, 2003). Beckett, Hewer & Howcroft (2000) states that the emergence of new forms of technology has created highly competitive market conditions for bank providers. However, the changed market conditions demand for banks to better understanding of consumers' needs. Daniel (1999) defines electronic banking as the delivery of banks' information and services by banks to customers via different delivery platforms that can be used with different terminal devices such as a personal computer and a mobile phone with browser or desktop software, telephone or digital television.Electronic banking also commonly known as internet banking or e-banking. Internet Banking, defined as the delivery of banking services through the open-access computer network (the internet) directly to customers home or private address. Sabbagh-AL Imtiyaz and Molla Alemayehu (2003) aim of this paper is to explore the drivers and inhibitors of customers Internet banking adoption in the Sultanate of Oman. Data from 225 respondents were used to address the aim. The findings indicate that, in Oman, only

two banks offer Internet banking services to customers. The main drivers of adoption appear to be compatibility, usefulness and ease of use. The extent of use is affected by lack of government support, poor quality of connection and page loading speed. Trust and face-toface personal banking preference have been found as major inhibitors of IB adoption. Hill (2004) conducted a study concerned with identifying the characteristics of online banking users. She mentioned that it is commonly assumed that demographics do influence the acceptance of electronic self-service tools, such as online banking. The results of the study were that people who use such services are young, trendy and high earning. They actively seek out online banking tools, and they want to conduct all transactions through the same channel. Sohail and Shanmugham (2004) wrote a paper concerning customers preferences in Ebanking in Malaysia. Their results were based on a survey of 300 respondents. Their conclusion indicates that age and educational qualifications of electronic and conventional banking have no significant impact on E-banking adoption. Instead, they argued that accessibility to the Internet, awareness of E-banking and customers resistance to change are the main factors influencing the adoption. Abhay Jain (2006) in his paper evaluates the applicability of Rogers' (1995) innovation attributes constructs in analyzing the adoption of mobile banking. The data was collected in India during January-August, 2005, and includes 222 survey responses. The article articulates the stimulating and inhibiting attributes in the adoption of mobile banking services and outlines some managerial implications. Fitzergerald (2004) choose to analyze four different research papers to identify current and potential customers perceptions on online banking. He concluded that there are common perceptions regarding online banking with disregard to demographic, geographic or psychographic characteristics. He argued that among the major non adoption areas are the security concerns and lack of awareness of online banking. Cleaver (1999) reports an academic study that concluded that older users prefer internet sites that do not demand complicated manipulation of software and hyperlinks the equipment, simply in order to browse. They appreciate functions that make on-line navigation easier and more convenient; for instance, simple, clear, and polite messages. Divya Singhal and V. Padhmanabhan (2008) examined the major factors responsible for internet banking based on customer perception on various internet applications. The Study also tries to examine whether there is any relation with the demographic variable (e.g. gender) and respondents perception about internet banking; and, whether the user and nonuser perception differs. The study employs both primary data as well as secondary data. Secondary data was collected from different published sources. Primary data was collected by structured survey. The analysis done by using factor analysis indicate that utility request, security, utility transaction, ticket booking and fund transfer are major factors. Out of total respondents more than 50 % agreed that internet banking was convenient and flexible ways of banking and it also have various transaction related benefits. Wai-Ching Poon and Booi-chen Tan (2008) examined the factors affecting the growth of ebanking in Malaysia from consumer perspective. A likert scale questionnaire survey was applied. The results show that there are seven factors influencing the growth of e-bankingconvenience of usage (including internet acceptability and ease of use), cost of services, trust

in bank (banks credibility), security concerns, awareness, reluctance of customers and government supports. The results indicate that all the factors are significant with respect to the consumers willingness in using e-banking services. The questionnaire was administered to 200 respondents. It was one of the fastest rising services and was a powerful tool for improving customer satisfaction as well as increasing cross-selling opportunities. Hence, the author suggested, banks should keep track of the ever-changing banking industry and the latest updates of internet technology to envisage future competition. Despite all the frenzy about e-banking, banks should not neglects their branch networks as face-to-face communication is still vital.
Research Methodology
The total sample consisted of 100 e-banking service providers in an urban area, who were using public and private banks e-banking services in Coimbatore city during the period from November 2008 to January 2009. The samples were selected by adopting purposive sampling technique, since not all e-banking service providers were willing to supply the required information. Hence, the investigator approached only those members who were willing to cooperate and supply the required information. The data collected were tabulated and analyzed for the purpose of giving precise and concise information. The following quantitative techniques were applied: Chi-square test; Garrett Rankling technique and Discriminant Analysis.
Usage of e-banking services mainly depends on socio-economic and occupational background. The customers using e-banking services may differ with regard to their bank, sex, age, marital status, education qualification, income level etc. Hence, the present section highlights the general characteristics of the respondents. For the purpose of analysis, ebanking service providers are divided into two types: public sector banks e-banking services and private sector banks e-banking services. Among the 100 e-banking service providers surveyed, 77 percent were using public sector banks e-banking services and 23 percent were using private sector banks e-banking services.

The customers were grouped as married and unmarried and majority of them were married.
Educational Status
Educational status is an important socio-economic factor for analyzing users perception on e-banking. The study found that 9.1 percent of respondents are secondary level, 5.2 percent are higher education level, 72.7 percent of the respondents are collegiate level and rest of the 13 percent of the respondents are professional graduates in public sector banks. The figures for private sector banks were 4.3, 4.3, 69.7 and remaining professional respectively.

The study reveals that 74.0 percent of respondents are having Savings Account; 2.6 percent are having Current Account; 15.6 percent are having Savings and Current Account and 7.8 percent are having savings and Term Deposit Account in public sector banks. Among the private banks 78.3 percent of the respondents are having Savings Account; 4.3 percent are having Savings and Current Account and 17.4 percent are having Savings and Term Deposit Account. Analysis of bank account among the respondents revealed that most of the respondents are having Savings Account in both public and private sector banks.

This table shows the sufficiency of ATM centres in their area. Eighty seven percent of public sector banks respondents have sufficient ATM centres and 82.6 percent of the respondents have sufficient ATM centres.

Usage of Internet Banking: The table shows that 85.7 percent of the respondents use
the internet banking facility in public sector banks and 100.0 percent of the respondents use this facility in private sector banks.
Convenience of Internet Banking Facility: The table shows that 85.7 percent of the
respondents are convenient with the Anywhere Banking facility in public sector banks and 100.0 percent of the respondents are convenient with the Anywhere Banking facility in private sector banks. V. AWARENESS AND USAGE OF MOBILE BANKING The study also analysed the respondents opinion on the awareness and usage of mobile banking.

Items Tried on Mobile: The above table shows 19.5 percent of the respondents have
tried the payment of bill system; 20.8 percent of them have tried requesting for cheque books and 59.7 percent of them have checked their account balance in their mobile in public sector banks. In private banks 21.8 percent of the respondents have tried the payment of bill system; 39.1 percent of them have tried the system of requesting for cheque books and 39.1 percent of them have checked their account balance in their mobile.
Satisfaction About the Facilities in Mobile Banking: Twenty six percent of the
respondents are satisfied with the checking of their balance enquiry system provided in their mobile in public sector bank and 34.8 percent of the respondents in the private sector bank are satisfied that the travel cost is saved since all the facilities are provided in their mobile.
Chi-Square Test
The Chi-square was used to test the significance of association between two attributes.

If the calculated value is less than the table value, the null hypothesis is accepted. If the calculated value is greater than the table value, the null hypothesis is rejected. The estimated Chi-square values are given in the following table:
Source: Primary Data The table shows that, Chi-square test was used at 5 percent significant level. It is evident that age did not differ with regard to the E-Banking service providers. However sex, marital status, education level, occupation and income significantly differed with regard to EBanking service providers to the selected respondents.
Discriminant Analysis
To identify the factors/variable that distinguishes public sector banks E-Banking services from that of private banks E-Banking services, a discriminant function was used. The selected respondents was hypothesized to be a function of age of the respondents in years (X 1); sex of the respondents (X 2); Marital status (X3); Educational status (X4); Occupation of the respondents (X 5); Income of the respondents (X 6). The means of the independent samples are shown in table.

Based on the above group means, the standardized canonical discriminant function which represents a linear composite of the original data variability to within groups variability was estimated as follows: Z = -0.887x1 + 0.240x2 + 0.033x3 + 0.341x4 + 0.493x5 + 0.809x6 Wilks lambda = 0.944 Chi-square = 12.6* Eigen value = 0.060 Canonical correlation = 0.24 (* significant at 5 percent level) In the above function the variables age, sex, marital status, education level, occupation and monthly income had positive sign indicating that these variables had higher discriminating power between groups. In short, it was these variables which distinguished the public sector banks e-banking services from private sector banks e-banking services. The age of the respondents had a negative sign implying that this variable acted as suppressor variable. The Wilks lambda and Chi-square value indicated that the function was significant at 5 percent level. The Canonical correlation associated with the discriminant function was 0.24 implying that 24 percent of the variation in the dependent variables was accounted by this model.
Conclusion
E-banking is changing the banking industry and is having major effects on banking relationships. E-banking is increasingly becoming a need to have than a nice to have service. The e-banking, thus, now is more of a norm rather than an exception in many developed countries due to the fact that it is the cheapest way of providing banking services. As more banks succeed online and more customers use their sites, fully functional online banking likely will become as common place as automated teller machines. E-banking services have revolutionised the functioning of the entire banking system. It has not only increased the ease of bank transactions, but also has reduced time and cost of these transactions. Customers have to be educated in the use of every new technology. On the whole e-banking increased operational efficiencies and reduces costs, besides giving a platform for offering valued added services to the customer, thereby fulfilling all the essential prerequisites for a flourishing banking industry. In a country like India, there is need for providing better and customized services to the customers. Banks must be concerned to the attitudes of customers with regard to acceptance of e-banking. In a nutshell, to meet the emerging challenges, banks have to undertake a series of changes in structure, functions, practices and marketing to popularize e-banking.
Suggestions
Banks to popularize the use of ATM, Internet banking, Plastic cards, Online Tax Accounting System, Real Time Gross Settlement by giving wide publicity in local media/TV. Banks to provide handouts to their customers explaining the advantages of various E- Banking facilities offered. Facilities for E- Banking should be offered to public free of charge as possible.

Bank staff to be trained to market various facilities of E- Banking with special reference to ATM, Internet banking, Plastic cards, Online Tax Accounting System, Real Time Gross Settlement.
