Board wont reimburse for training

Carter spent $1,135 on MASB courses

Saline Board of Education member Todd Carter addresses the board April 10 about the new goal of the districts Strategic Framework. The new objective deals with the districts desire to practice sound nancial principles.

Members of the Saline Board of Education will have to cover their training costs from now on. The board voted unanimously to discontinue its practice of reimbursing trustee expenses for taking Michigan Association of School Board classes. The move will save less than $2,000 this year, but is intended to be a symbolic gesture toward teachers and staff members who have had to sacrifice wages and benefits. The policy came at the behest of Board President Lisa Slawson, who said since the school district is experiencing tightened finances and has asked

for concessions from staff members, it was only proper for the board to give up something. Slawson produced a document highlighting the course taken by board members this year. Todd Carter, Amy Cattell and David Holden have each taken a single course. Holden paid the district $180 for his course, while Cattell was able to use a voucher to cover the $95 cost of her course. Carters lone course cost the district $95. New trustee David Zimmer has taken several courses already totaling $1,135. This did not sit well with Cattell. How did this happen, she said, commenting that Zimmer accrued his total in fewer than three months. Zimmer said the board has made it a goal to become a Board of Merit and that means he needed to become certified this

year, according to a board decision made in February that included it under the Strategic Framework. In response to that, I took the classes and became certified, he said. Thats within two years, Dave, not two months, Cattell retorted. It has to be achieved in 2012, Zimmer said. This is consistent with the direction given to me. Dave, this has never happened before, Cattell said. I cant help that the board has not sought to become certified in the past, Zimmer said. Holden said he asked Slawson to produce records of past board members training costs. The goal is an historical perspective, especially with Slawson and Chuck Leschs records. To see what those costs are over a period of time, Holden said. We have just gone with six-year terms

State Rep. Mark Ouimet is confident his record and that of the Republican majority in Lansing will help him win re-election in November. Ouimet faces Saline Mayor Gretchen Driskell in the race for the 52nd District. He was elected in November 2010. The district includes parts of the city of Ann Arbor and Ann Arbor Township; the cities of Chelsea and Saline; the villages of

Dexter and Manchester; and the townships of Bridgewater, Dexter, Freedom, Lima, Lodi, Lyndon, Manchester, Northfield, Scio, Sharon, Sylvan and Webster. While Driskell predicts Ouimets voting record will be his undoing, the incumbent sees it differently The improving economy is . a sign to him of good things to come. I think we will be elected based on the way we have run the state over the past 18 months, he said last week at Liberty School in Saline. Unemployment is down to 8.8 percent, median incomes are rising and weve added 100,000 new jobs. Ouimet said the state is becoming more attractive to new businesses, the bond rating

Mondays strong winds caused a large tree on North Saline-Ann Arbor Road to fall onto a number of power lines near the Bennett Street intersection in Saline. The tree fell at an angle onto the road at about 2:30 p.m. and both police and firefighters responded to block

off the area and redirect traffic. As of about 4 p.m. Monday, the road was still closed between Bennett and Russell streets while DTE Energy worked on the power lines. The Department of Public Works was scheduled to remove the tree. Barriers were placed to keep traffic from moving into the area while work was done.

Multiple live wires were caught up in the tree and downed along the road and sidewalks on both sides, which required emergency responders to divert both vehicles and pedestrians from moving through the area. Fire Chief Craig Hoeft said there were three other wires downed Monday in the vicinity from the wind,

but this was the first inside the city The tree that fell has . caused problems in the past, he said. He said large limbs have gone down two times before, but this will be the last time. The tree splintered almost completely through the trunk near the ground and the entire tree needed to be removed. While some houses in

the immediate vicinity lost power, according to the Saline Police Department there had been no further reports of power outages in the area. The National Weather Service issued an advisory Monday for the area, warning of winds from the southwest up to 30 miles per hour and gusts up to 50 miles through the afternoon.
