2.2.2.

History The history of PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk. (the Company) and its

current stature as one of the biggest cigarette manufacturers in Indonesia are inseparable from the history of its founding family, the Sampoerna family. In 1913, Liem Seeng Tee, a Chinese immigrant, began his business by producing and selling hand-rolled kretek (clove) cigarettes, at his home in Surabaya, Indonesia. His small business was among the first to manufacture and market kretek as well as non-clove cigarettes. Kretek cigarettes grew quickly in popularity. By the early 1930s, Liem Seeng Tee had changed his family name and the name of his company to Sampoerna (Indonesian for perfect). With his business firmly established, Seeng Tee moved both his family and his factory to an abandoned complex of buildings in Surabaya, which he subsequently renovated. The new factory and family residence, which still produces the Companys hand-rolled kretek cigarettes to this day, is now known as Taman Sampoerna. In 1959, three years after the passing of Seeng Tee, Aga Sampoerna (Seeng Tees second son) was appointed to lead and reinvigorate the company. He succeeded in furthering the family business through his skilled leadership and management, and by building good relationships with employees, suppliers, cigarette sellers and the surrounding community. Agas son, Putera, then took over the helm of HM Sampoerna in 1978. During Putera Sampoernas tenure, the company established a modern corporate structure and became a public company in 1990, embarking on a period of investment and expansion. In the process, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. consolidated its position as one of Indonesias top-tier companies. With its business success, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. drew the interest of the worlds leading international tobacco company Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI). This led to PT Philip Morris Indonesia (a subsidiary of PMI) acquiring majority ownership of PT HM Sampoerna Tbk in May 2005.

17

Guided by an experienced Board of Directors and management that combine the talents of PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. and PMI, the Company continues to effectively leverage the synergies derived from the Sampoerna acquisition, while maintaining the unique Indonesian culture, heritage and tradition that have been passed on for almost a century.

The Hands, which represent adult smokers, employees and business partners, and the society at large, are those we need to embrace to attain our goal of becoming the most respected company in Indonesia, thereby generating long term shareholder value. 2.2.3.1. 2.2.4.

Production Facilities The Karawang plants facility involves two major regions, which are named

Lot 17 and Lot 41. Lot 17 and Lot 41 are separated with a sub road; hence, they are not inside one gate. There are two facility units in Lot 17. They are Tobacco-Clove Warehouse and Sampoerna Print Pack (SPP). The Tobacco-Clove Warehouse itself is functioned to store the tobacco and clove to supply the production needs in Karawang plant. As part of Tobacco-Clove Warehouse, there are 9 chambers for tobacco and clove storage and 1 chamber for finished goods warehouse. The finished goods warehouse is managed by Handal Logistic instead of Sampoerna. It is a distinct business unit of Sampoerna who organizes the distribution of Sampoerna products and materials. Similar to Handal, the SPP is also another business unit of Sampoerna. Its operation is in printing and packaging area to supply the packaging for Sampoerna Karawangs product. On the other hand, Lot 41 is established as the main production area in Karawang plant. Inside this area, there are three main buildings. The first one is named as Clove Processing Area. The area comprises the clove processing line and RTC line as the component of cigarette aside from tobacco. The second building is separated into two key divisions, namely Primary Processing and Secondary Kretek Processing. The Primary Processing division has Tobacco Feeding Area, Tobacco Processing Area, and Cut Filler Area. The Clove and RTC line also belongs to Primary Processing division. Primary Processing is operated to produce the blend for the cigarette content. The blending process happens in Cut Filler Area, as the blend is called cut filler. Meanwhile, the Secondary Processing Area operates in making and packing cigarettes. It transforms the cut filler blend into cigarettes and pack them until ready to be distributed to the market. In this building, there are also three main warehouses, Direct Incoming Material (DIM) Warehouse to support material other than the blend components, Finished Goods Warehouse that is also managed by Handal Logistic, and Cut Filler Warehouse to organize cut filler distribution to TPO (Third Party Operation). The third building is the site for management office, namely Central Common Building. This area also possesses Spare Part Warehouse, Tax Stamp Cutting Area, and Central Waste Dock. Nevertheless, there are also other minor areas inside each of those three building that supports the operation in Lot 41. 19

2.2.5.

The Products Sampoerna Karawang plant is focused in producing one brand only, A Mild.

The product is divided into two types based on packaging quantity. They are A Mild 16 with 16 sticks and A Mild 12 with 12 sticks of cigarette. They are produced inside Karawang plant starting from processing the blend components, making, packanging, and packing for distribution to the market. However, the Cut Filler Area in this factory serves not only the blend for A Mild but also the blend for two other brands, Dji Sam Soe and Sampoerna Hijau. Henceforth, the output of Cut Filler Area consists of three blends. The blends for Dji Sam Soe and Sampoerna Hijau are then manufactured outside the Karawang plant by manual operation, which is done in TPO. In contrast, the blend for A Mild is processed inside Karawang plant with automatic operation. Those output products are going to be distributed to the west market area in Indonesia.

CHAPTER III JOB DESCRIBTION and ACTIVITIES

3.1. First Internship PT Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia

3.1.1. Daily

Job Description

1. Join Preventive Team in their duty Project 1. Make the wiring diagram and the layout of Production Line 4 Conveyor 2. Make the translation for operation instruction of ACU 3000 3. Measure the efficiency of Production Line 6 and 7

3.1.2. Observation Like we know already, PT. Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia is a well known manufacture company which is moving in beverage field. PT Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia has produced a lot of beverages in many types of packaging. In there, the production is divided based on its packaging. There are can, bottle, box, tube, and bag. In this case, I would like to explain about the flow production of can packaging which is known as RGB (Returnable Glass Bottle). The table below will show the flow process of RGB production

22

23

3.1.3. Project Involved

3.1.3.1.Wiring Diagram Layout of Production Line 4 Conveyor

Background: There are a lot of improvements made by the technician in that area. However, they dont record the change into wiring diagram layout book. Wiring diagram is a diagram that shows the connection of all components in that area. Layout shows the location of motors and sensors. Thus, many difference between the wiring diagram layout and the real condition of the connection.

Objective: The objective of this project is to make the exact wiring diagram of Production Line 4 Conveyor. With an accurate wiring diagram layout, the technician can track every error happens in that area. Besides that, there will be an improvement for the conveyor. Thus, the company can do it more effective and efficient with exact wiring diagram layout.

Concept: In order to conduct this project, we must know all about the wiring diagram and the layout. First we learnt about the wiring diagram from Production Line 6 which is more accurate than from Production Line 4. By doing this, we learnt how to analyze the wiring diagram, how to make the symbol and variable, and how to manage the wiring diagram.

24

3.1.3.2.Translation of ACU 3000 Operation Instruction

Background: ACU 3000 is one of the IPC in PT Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia. This ACU 3000 is used to control the movement of the conveyor in Production Line 2. The operation instruction is made in English

Objective: The objective of this project is to make the technicians and operators to be able to understand the operation instruction easily by translating from English to Indonesian.

Concept: We cant translate the operation instruction directly. We must know the variable that must not be translated into Indonesian because those variables are common among operators and technicians. Thus we must understand first the meaning and purpose of the operation instruction before we make the translation.

3.1.3.3.Efficiency Measurement in Production Line 6 and 7

Background: In PT Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia, there are twelve production lines. For RGB (Returnable Glass Bottle) products, it is produced in Production Line 6 and 7. Production Line 6 is same with Production Line 7. Each production line consists of eleven different machines, such as Uncaser, Bottle Washer, EBI (Electronic Bottle Inspector), Filler, Crowner, FHD, Case Packer, Palletizer, Conveyor, Intermix, and Date Coder. 25

Objective: The objective of this project is to measure the effectiveness of production in Production Line 6 and 7. This is happen because the Production Line 6 and 7 have low productivity.

Concept: We do this project through observation. Four of us are divided into two groups. Each group will observe one production line. One people will observe EBI, Filler, Crowner, FHD, Intermix, and Data Coder while another will observe Uncaser, Bottler Washer, Case Packer, Palletizer, and Conveyor. We record the problems occurred in the production line for period 4 hours. From those data, we used the formula given by our supervisor: ( ) ( )

This formula is known as Down Time formula. The value of the down time indicates the ineffectiveness in the production line. If we want to get the effectiveness value, we can subjugate 100% with the value of the down time that we got. Sometimes, there are difference reason and time recorded by every member in a group about an event. For example, at 10:45:10 AM, one intern recorded that EBI stopped for 20seconds and the other recorded that Palletizer stop for 30 seconds from 10:45:20 AM. Therefore, we need to analyze the difference and find the main reason why the production line stops at that time.

Concept: Before I make the training manual, I must know the overall details of the machine first. Therefore, I must observe how the machine work and learn the technical data of some parts in the machine such as sensors, actuators, and software. After that, I start to make the training manual based on the available materials and the guidance from supervisor, technicians, and operators. Based on the training manual, I make the presentation and question & answer. The presentation is used to deliver the important materials to the audiences. Question & answer is used to test the knowledge of the training participant in the end of training period.

3.2.3.2.Training module of PROTOS PM 100 maker machine

Background: PROTOS PM 100 maker machine is one of the PT Philip Morris Indonesia maker machine in Bekasi Manufacture Center, Cibitung, West Java. This machine is used to create the cigarette from tobacco into cigarette rod. PROTOS PM 100 maker machine can produce 10000 cigarette rods per minute. The machine is divided into three parts which are VE 100, SE 100, and MAX 100.

Objective: I was assigned with Herminarto Nugroho in this project. Mr. Hario Arief as the manager of Technical Training wants us to develop the training module for this machine based on the materials we had and some additional data from PT Philip Morris Philippines. The training module will consist of training manual, presentation, and question & answer.

Concept: Same like the way I develop the training module of FOCKE 550 packer machine. We must know the overall details about the machine before we make the training manual. After the training manual finished, we make the presentation and question & answer. However, in this training module, we categorize the materials based on VE 100, SE 100, and MAX 100.

CHAPTER IV PERSONAL RESULT AND EVALUATION

4.1. Personal Result

In this eight months internship, I got a lot of new experiences. Either in PT. Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia or PT. Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk., I learnt a lot of new things which were new for me. There are some projects that are trusted to me so I can apply what I learnt in President University into my internship. After I finished my internship in PT Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia and PT. Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk., I gain some personal results that match with the objective of my internship before:

1. Develop my abilities to achieve performance goals based on the responsibilities and duties In the wiring diagram of Production Line 4 project in PT Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia and training module project in PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna, I got an opportunity to plan what I will do in the project. Because of that, I can learn how to utilize my abilities, time, and resources based on my responsibilities and duties to achieve the goal of the project.

2. Experience working within a group or team In my internship, I got a lot of experience working within a team. Both companies gave me an opportunity to work in a team due to the complicated level of the project or the time we have to finish the project. Working in a group is not same with working personal. In a group, I must have some attitudes and behaviors, such as responsible to the team, cooperative with members in team, and contribute to the success of the team. I learnt that the success of team is not depend on one person

5. Develop decision-making and problem-solving skills through the formulation, implementation and evaluation of alternative solutions to problems and approaches to issues I believe that in the process of finishing the project, we will always encounter problems. Some problems appear because of the unpredictable situation. In my internship, I sometimes encountered this kind of situations. In that time, I was tested indirectly about my decision-making and problem-solving skills. From those experiences, I learnt a lot of things which make me transform from an amateur into a professional.

6. Gain an understanding of the overall company organizational structure and their management philosophy (or corporate culture) By working in a company, we can learn how the organizational structure in one big organization. Every organization has their unique management philosophy. In 31

my internship at PT Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia and PT. Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk., I got a lot of experience about the overall company organizational structure and management philosophy that I believe will be useful for me in the future.
