School Boards

School Boards
Schools are affiliated to one of various school boards available in India. Their education philosophy and curricula, being different, influence the child's education and future differently. Evaluate each board carefully to decide which one is best suited to your child. For a young family, before moving to a new location and finding a place to live, it is important to find school admission for the children and thereafter, find a house not far from the school. Unlike in developed countries, the number of primary to senior secondary schools in India, though significant, are still inadequate to meet the huge demand and hence admission to good schools are keenly contested via admission tests and interviews of the child as well as parents. If the children are still very young, it is wise to spend some time on school board selection, because all schools affiliated to a given board must follow the guidelines and curriculum of that board. And since different boards follow different methodologies, it can shape a child's learning and mental growth differently. A range of school boards and certifications is available for parents to choose from. With choices and the important decision affecting the future of their precious children, parents go into a tizzy over which one is best. We attempt a comparison of boards and present the pros and cons of each.

State Boards
This is the one followed by most of the old schools, simply because this was the only one available a generation or two ago when many of these institutions were started. The learning is textbook-based and emphasizes discipline and hard work. The work load is much lighter than CBSE and ICSE and students have ample time to partake in extra-curricular activities. The discipline aspect also means that answer books are scored based on expected language and steps in the answers, which encourages rote learning. But it also means hard-working students with excellent memory can score very highly and in fact do so in class 10 and 12 public exams. Some of the better schools still produce IIT (the best engineering institutes in India) and medical entrance rankers in significant numbers.

National Boards
CBSE and CISCE If you are not in favour of grades-focussed learning and prefer holistic development of the child, you have a choice of two national-level boards - Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE and Council for The Indian School Certificate Examinations or CISCE . Both have affilated schools in several countries. CBSE The exam it conducts for class 10 is called All India Secondary School Examination or AISSE and the one for class 12 is called All India Senior School Certificate Examination. Regular candidates from CBSE affiliated schools as well as private candidates from non-affiliated schools can appear for the public exams. Both english and hindi medium allowed, but this is school dependent. CISCE CISCE was established after independence to fill the need for an All India Exam to replace the Cambridge School Certificate Examination, which was held outside the UK. The class 10 exam is called Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), while the class 12 one is called Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examination. CISCE also conducts The Certificate of Vocational Education (CVE) Examination, which is intended to prepare students for particular occupations. Schools affiliated to CISCE are commonly known as ICSE schools and the board itself known as 'ICSE board'.

CBSE versus ICSE 1Syllabus. In general, both syllabi are of a very high standard. But ICSE is more difficult than CBSE. Right from the lower classes, the syllabus for ICSE is richer in content than CBSE. For example, students in ICSE class I (standard/grade I) learn multiplication tables from 1 to 10 and writing numbers from 1 to 250 numerically and in words, counting backward and forward, components of a personal computer, their function and how they work together, whereas all this happens in class 2 and 3 in CBSE. By class XII, maths and science are more or less equal in both boards, but ICSE has more language, literature and social sciences content than CBSE, with the exception of perhaps hindi. In a fast paced work environment, excellent language and communication skills are critical and can save time and money. This is where ICSE scores over CBSE. ICSE is known for its application oriented lab-based approach, discourages rote learning, is very flexible and is the only Indian board which allows substitution of science and maths with alternatives like engineering drawing, agricultural science, commercial studies, etc.. 2Scoring. CBSE is more liberal with regard to scoring in exams. So if class 12 scoring is important to you, a CBSE student in class 12 may score a few percentage points more than an equally good ICSE student. From a competitive exam perspective, CBSE class 12 students may have less work-load and hence more time for preparation. In CBSE, school evaluations of practical and, to a certain extent, theory exams are included in the board's final exam result. Subjects like science, math and social studies for class 10 and accountancy and sociology for class 12 have school evaluation components. In ICSE, final class 12 result includes 20 percent of school evaluations, both orals and practicals, in Group I and II subjects. Group I is engineering (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) oriented, whereas Group II is medicine (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) oriented. Also, except for languages, all subjects have a 30 percent practical component.
