Kaslo adopted an Animal Attractant Bylaw in 2008 which is intended
to help us all reduce Kaslos problems with animals, bears included,
in our streets. Basics for everyone to remember are:
Do not put garbage cans out for collection before 5 am on garbage days
All garbage must be in cans, not put out on the street in bags
Be sure garbage cans, sheds and outdoor fridges and freezers are
secure against any animal interference
No bird feeders are permitted between April 15 and December 1
Do not leave pet food outside
Keep barbecue grills clean
Compost properly, without food or smells to attract wildlife
Pick fruit when ripe, and clean up windfall within 3 days
(do not allow fallen fruit to stay on the ground)
Kaslo must stop providing easy sources of food
to wildlife to protect both animals and people.

Violence Against Women Week. Tis is a week that is used
to raise awareness about the issue of violence and abuse
perpetrated on women and children and it is an invita-
tion for people to learn about the issue of violence against
some of the most vulnerable in our communities.
During this week, Salmo Community Services will have
silhouettes on display in the lot on the north side of our
building. Tese silhouettes will display information about
the issue of violence and abuse. We invite people from the
region to come by and have a stroll through the crowd
and perhaps learn something new.
We are all afected by violence and we all have a role to
play in prevention. Come fnd out how you may help in

The Village of Kaslo will be picking up organic yard
and garden trimmings only, free of charge, in an
effort to help our residents tidy up yards and adjacent boulevards on:
Tuesday, April 24 for lower Kaslo, and south of Kaslo River
Wednesday, April 25 for upper Kaslo, and Kaslo Bay area
Please make a note on your calendar. A few things to keep in mind are:
Absolutely no garbage mixed in with garden trimmings -
anything other than garden organics will not be picked up;
Leaves, dead plants and grass trimmings must be bagged in com-
postable bags available for purchase in quantity at local retail outlets;
Small branches must be cut to lengths less than 6 feet and bundled;
Ensure adequate access for equipment.
Everything must be ready for pick-up from your boulevard or lane
by 7am on the appointed day for your area.

National Victims Of Crime
Awareness Week
Moving Forward is the theme of this years National
Victims of Crime Awareness Week, taking place across
Canada from Sunday, April 22 to Saturday, April 28, 2012.
Activities across the country will focus on raising aware-
ness of services available to victims of crime in Canada,
such as those provided by Victim Service at North Koote-
nay Lake Community Services Society (NKLCSS) and the
Advocacy Centre in Nelson. National Victims of Crime
Awareness Week also provides opportunities to further
explore new ways to reach out to victims of crime and give
them have a stronger voice in the justice system.
National Victims of Crime Awareness Week is an im-
portant event for our community because it provides an
opportunity to both promote awareness of existing servi-
ces and for service providers from a number of agencies to
meet and fnd ways to collaborate so that we can strength-
en the safety net for victims of crime, said Suzan Clancy,
Victim Service Worker at NKLCSS.
A person who has just become a victim of crime is ofen
in shock and feeling vulnerable. It is not a good time to
have to take in a lot of information or make rational deci-
sions. Yet ofen the crime thrusts a victim into just that
position. A strong safety net can support him/her im-
mediate needs for physical and emotional safety and work
with him/her to address longer term issues.
National Victims of Crime Awareness Week 2012 will
be launched in Ottawa on April 23, 2012 by the federal
ministers of Justice and Public Safety, when victims, vic-
tim advocates and representatives working in the area of
victim issues will gather for the seventh annual federal
symposium hosted by the Government of Canada.

45 Books In 45 Minutes
Get ready for summer reading! Each year the Kaslo and
District Public Library celebrates Arts and Culture Week
with the fast-paced and fun 45 Books in 45 Minutes. Tis
year the ffh annual event will be held on Tuesday, April
24 at 7 pm at the United Church Hall.
Nine volunteer reviewers choose fve titles each to re-
view. Tats 45 books, and with one minute per title, thats
45 minutes. Tis year we welcome Janet Mayfeld as our
MC, with the dif cult job of timing the reviews and then
hauling reluctant reviewers of the stage when their time is
up. One minute can go by in a fash or drag on to eternity,
it all depends on the book!
Everyone attending is greeted at the door with a list of
the titles being reviewed and a pencil. Tere is space to
make notes and ofen library staf is kept busy for months
afer the event placing holds and interlibrary loan orders
for these requested titles. Being the wonderfully diverse
and well-read community that Kaslo is, the titles reviewed
cover many topics and genres of books. From Te Girl
Who Played With Fire to Te Female Brain and TinTin in
Tibet to Te Dessert Bible, fction, non-fction, adults and
childrens titles, Kaslo readers read (and review) it all at
45 Books.

Exploring Mother Culture:
Grow Mushrooms!
Tis mothers day, join Peter McAllister from Under-
belly Farm and Kootenay Agroforestry Society in a mush-
room growing demonstration, slide show and discussion
at the Scout Hall (Kaslo and Area Youth Centre) on Sun-
day, May 13 from 1 pm to to 4 pm (rain or shine). Tis
educational event is a money and awareness gathering for
the Kootenay Spawn Bank. Part of the proceeds also go to
the Kaslo and Area Youth Centre.
Tis all ages event welcomes those interested in growing
culinary and medicinal mushrooms indoors and outdoors
for fun or for proft. Te workshop begins with a dem-
onstration of simple methods to start mushrooms using
spores, stem butts and commercially prepared spawn. Te
second portion of the workshop is a slide show and dis-
cussion on how to grow and maintain mushroom cultures
such as yogurt, miso, tempeh, beer and wine yeast, shii-
take and oyster mushroom spawns, kombucha, amasake,
sourdough cultures etc. Tis event is for those wanting to
work with mushrooms for culinary, medicinal, spiritual,
nature craf or gardening enrichment.
Te Kootenay Spawn Bank (KSB) would be a network
of people wanting to save, multiply and share spawn. If
everyone takes on culture to nurture, our lives will be

To celebrate mothers attending there will be child
minding for ages 4 and up. Te children will have the op-

Freedom Quest Regional Youth Services has been sin-
gled out for exclusive funding in the West Kootenay re-
gion by Embrace BC. Why? So that Freedom Quest can
generate an increased awareness on issues of hate-crime,
racism and discrimination. Tis will happen in the form
of a youth dialogues event called See Me, Meet Me, Hear
Me on Tueday, May 15 at the Selkirk College gym in
Castlegar. With youth speakers, an included lunch, dia-
logue and a puzzle art project, multiple perspectives will
be integrated, assumptions uncovered, and stories will
be shared. Dont miss this opportunity to work towards
building an inclusive community where everyone, includ-
ing youth, is heard and respected. Come celebrate multi-
culturalism!
Youth, adults and seniors are all welcome. Limited space
