FasT ForWard: The FuTure oF iT deparTmenTs

BY JENNIFER LECLAIRE

Twenty-first century iT departments are wrangling with everything from drive-by malware attacks and data center innovation to budget constraints and government mandates and thats just the daily grind.
iT touches nearly every aspect of todays corporate environment. indeed, iT is a complex world where leadership is challenged to see the big picture, the smallest details and the future. Failure to have the right people with the right skills in the right place at the right time can cause a costly ripple effect across the entire organization. and yet the C-suites task goes beyond merely putting the best and brightest iT workers on post. Whether retail, healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, or some other sector of the economy, corporate execs are charged with understanding the past, keeping up with the torrid pace of the present, and predicting future iT trends that promise to drive greater profitability and stronger customer service in the ultra-competitive race for market share.

one of the biggest challenges executives face in the realm of iT staffing is this: Were reacting to todays market and todays market doesnt always reflect the skill sets well need in tomorrows economy. The good news is we can learn plenty about the future of iT departments and the skill sets that enterprises will demand by looking at the past and the present. When we do, well discover that the future demands an ever-increasing breadth of technology skills.
JaCK CuLLen presidenT, modis

WEVE COME A LONG WAY IN A SHORT TIME

information technology as we know it dates back to 1946. Thats when prosper eckert and John W. mauchly invented the first general purpose computer using vacuum tubes. in 1951, the first commercial computer came to market. it relied on rotating magnetic drums for internal storage. slow progress led to the invention of semiconductors and magnetic tape disks in the 1960s and, finally, operating systems and programming languages emerged in the 1970s. The beginnings of the iT explosion soon followed. Bill gates launched microsoft in 1975. steve Jobs introduced the apple ii in 1977. iBm rolled out its first pC in 1981. and software programs began flooding the market in the mid-80s. iT departments in those days consisted of a few programmers tasked with keeping mainframe systems up and running, managing pC networks, backing up data, managing customer databases, and developing new software systems. iT was a cost center, albeit a necessary one to keep the enterprise up and running. We didnt see the first real iT hiring boom until 1985, Cullen recalls. Thats when we shifted from contracted consultants to bringing fulltime technology workers in house. The demand was for programmers that could write code for mainframes. The skill sets werent overly complex. There was a heavy influence on ims, idms and adaBas/natural, along with C language code. in the early 90s, the iT department evolved to accommodate the growth of servers and server software. reengineering business processes was the hot topic and deploying automation software was the trend of the day. That, Cullen says, demanded technology workers with deeper skill sets, including diverse software language and application knowledge. The days of the technology generalist began to wane as iT defined specialties. iT training emerged to ready the next generation of technology workers.

2011 SALARY GUIDE

and who can forget the dot-com era? For the first time, iT became more than a technology mule more than a cost center. indeed, iT became the darling of the enterprise as companies launched e-commerce projects and internet-based technologies. Writing code for the web was the skill set du jour. The Chief information officer came to the fore and iT executives with various titles rose up to oversee the new age of technology and meet the rapidly increasing demands from the C-suite and customers alike.
THE POST-RECESSION REALITY

generally speaking, industry surveys from various firms agree that an iT hiring rebound is underway and will continue through 2011. networking, security, virtualization and database skills are among the most demanded, and employers may once again find themselves more aggressively competing for the best and brightest talent. Companies want to hire for the future, but they are taking their time. They are scouring the postrecession market to find the best talent in the wake of iT cutbacks, Cullen says. But the reality is Cios and other executives need to make a decision sooner rather than later because candidates have multiple offers on the table. The demand for iT workers is increasing dramatically. if you are looking for the purple squirrel, youre going to be looking for a long time. you may pass up good technologists if you dont move out of this post-recession mentality.
GETTING ON THE CLOUD AND THE SHIFT TO SOCIAL

after the dot-com bubble burst, iT was once again forced to evolve. innovation and cost-cutting through streamlining business processes is the new wave. Today, executives are tasked with identifying technological advances that drive both. iT has become a fragmented industry with ever-greater complexity. yet some skill sets have emerged as dominant and those skill sets seem poised to remain on the scene through the next phase of iT evolution. Companies are constantly looking at how to cut costs, trim payroll, and deliver iT more rapidly. everything iT-centric must respond to that theme as we continue down this road, Cullen says. Todays iT department is about how quick and nimble you can be. its about the bottom line, the return on investment. at the same time, companies are wrestling with how much control they want to maintain inside the enterprise versus how much they are willing to give up through concepts such as outsourcing and iT-as-a-service. Thats a big dilemma. some companies may not have a choice. although offshore iT outsourcing remains an industry standard, more companies are beginning to explore the value of onshore service facilities. Thats because financial regulations and privacy rules in some industries demand data is stored near a companys home market. mcKinsey & Company recently noted that the trend of onshore operations in second-tier cities is gaining ground. The firm cited access to pools of highly skilled and talented workers at attractive wage levels, as well as tax incentives from state governments, as drivers.

social media. intelligent devices. Cloud computing. The C-suite can see glimpses of the iT departments future by looking at current technology trends and their potential to impact the bottom line. market research firm gartner has said that information will be the oil of the 21st century and identified several trends that will change iT and the economy over the next decade, including the cloud, business impact of social computing, and context-aware computing. Cloud computing represents a shift in the relationship between the providers and consumers of iT-based solutions. as gartner sees it, the cloud represents a new opportunity to shape the relationship between those who use iT services and those who sell them. gartner predicts worldwide cloud services revenue including public and private services will reach $148.8 billion in 2014. Whats more, the firm predicts all global 2000 companies will use public cloud services by 2016.

2011 SALARY GUIDE

according to Cullen, The next 10 years are going to be extremely dynamic. Were going to see rapid advances in a changing landscape that values instant access to technology. Today, personal and business applications are in two different buckets. in the future, they will sit in one bucket. Thats a major shift. Cloud computing is part of that shift. another part of that shift is the business impact of social computing. nielsen reports more than one million Tweets are sent each hour. at the same time, 34 percent of online americans have used Facebook, Twitter or other social media to rant or rave about a product, company or brand. iT and business leaders need to determine how to capitalize on the power of social networks. and therein lies the challenge: 80 percent of organizations will lack a coherent approach to dealing with information from social media through 2015, gartner predicts. This is part of the next evolution. The iT department of 10 years from now is going to look much different, Cullen says. Beyond the cloud, youve got social media and mobile computing to deal with. Just as we saw the early days of iT demand specialists in one language or one skill, well see the opposite in the future of iT. iT pros will have broader skill sets, as well as a business mindset and work more closely with C-suite executives to execute strategy.
WE CAN SEE THE FUTURE OF IT. BUT WHO WILL LEAD US THERE?

That leads us to the next major trend that will impact iT leaders in the new decade: context-aware computing. Context-aware computing leverages time and place. a combination of wireless technologies, mobile devices like netbooks, tablets and smartphones, and affordable communications packages will drive this trend a trend that will usher in a new age of iT challenges. The numbers gartner is reporting are staggering and so is the opportunity. By 2016, the firm predicts, one-third of worldwide mobile consumer marketing will be context-awareness based. more than $150 billion of global telecom spending will shift from services to applications by 2012, and the global market for context-aware services will total $215 billion. What about the future of iT as far out as 2020? Thats where ozzies vision of the future becomes a greater reality. already emerging through technologies like Xbox Kinect, human augmentation is where technology is headed. human augmentation is a technology that focuses on creating cognitive and physical improvements as an integral part of the human body. gartner predicts this will become a $1 billion market by 2020, along with wireless power devices. The seeds have been planted for the next generation of technology, which gartner predicts will run from 2025 to 2080. But will the u.s. have the technology workers to fill the bill? Cullen is concerned that universities in the united states arent ready for the immediate future, much less the long-term outlook. With so many iT jobs outsourced to China and india, he says, it has discouraged todays youth from pursuing the technology field. right now, were not graduating enough students with technology degrees. There is already a skills gap, Cullen says. plus, we have a huge group of people nearing retirement age. They hold the keys to the old technology, which is important to understand as you move forward to the next wave. Technology evolved slowly until the 2000s, and now its moving at breakneck speed. niches are an endangered species. Companies need to invest now in the iT workers of tomorrow because they are going to be harder to find in the future.

indeed, iT is heading for a new day beyond the pC. Thats the message microsofts outgoing Chief software architect, ray ozzie, is sending to the company. in fact, he is encouraging redmond to imagine a post-pC world. ozzie sees connected devices beyond the pC that will increasingly come in various shapes and sizes, tuned for a broad variety of communications, creation and consumption tasks. ozzie expects decades of incredible innovation that will emerge from connected companions that well wear, carry and use on our desks and walls and environment all around us.
