One Year Course in Interior Design

1. Academic Title
The course permits the achievement of One Year Certificate.

4. Didactic aims of the course

The One Year Interior Design course is designed to offer participants a practical study of Italian design, revolving around a number of shows and fairs that exhibit the best of the Italian design system: the Salone del Mobile furniture show in Milan and the Design Week that follows; the Salone della Nautica boat show in Genoa; and the two most important building fairs, Made Expo in Milan and SAIE in Bologna. The course is therefore structured around courses aimed at getting acquainted with the Italian design system, understanding company and marketing dynamics, and analyzing current trends in interior design in terms of language, form and materials. The course consists of a preparatory stage to help understand the dynamics of the exhibition events, followed by a guided tour of the most important events of the fairs, and ends with an analysis of current trends in design and their subsequent implications.

6. The professional role

The Interior Designer An interior designer is responsible for design in several areas. First of all, there is the private home in the traditional sense, including private and collective living spaces. Then there are public spaces, from transit areas (airports, ports, stations) to public service areas (banks, post offices, hospitals, schools, museums and exhibition spaces), as well as consumption areas (shops, bars, hotels) and open spaces (plazas, courtyards and play areas). Any kind of private or public interior (museum, hospital, office, airport, station) or permanent or temporary interior (exhibitions in general) is a complex series of elements that creates the quality of the relationship between individuals and their living space: Size, furnishings, lighting, colours and sounds are the basic elements that an interior design plan must be able to manipulate and put together. Designing does not just mean considering how the spaces and the furnishings are organized; it also entails looking at the entire range of elements that make the space liveable: light, colour and texture, comfort factors, etc. In contemporary architecture, interior spaces open towards the city, and the boundary between interior and exterior is now increasingly blurred. A designer should be able to work on this border, imagining how the interior space can be projected into urban public spaces. What an interior designer creates is no longer a limited space, defined by physical boundaries, but a system of relationships.

7. Structure and methodology

The One Year Interior Design course consists of two modules. The aim of the first module is to investigate the dynamics of Italian design from the standpoint of management, project strategy and trends. It focuses on the Salone del Mobile in Milan and on targeted visits to companies involved in the Italian design system. The second semester, students can choose between two different training modules: the Project Module or the Trends Module. The Project Module aims to lay the methodological groundwork for designing a space. The course provides some basic techniques that are necessary for the development and representation of the design project. There is also discussion of the problems involved in both the method and the technology to be used in designing an architectural space. Students can test their skills in the two workshops held during the course. The course also allows entry to the three-year course in Interior Design, with recognition of 30 credits. The Trends Module allows participants to investigate trends further, into other design areas. The module focuses on guided visits to the Salone della Nautica boat show in Genoa to the MADE EXPO building fair in Milan, and the SAIE building fair in Bologna, providing insight into areas, scenarios, forms and materials that are enormously important for building a cultural background in the field of design, for increasing personal knowledge and for improving the ability to pick up on trends.

8. Training Activities
The main educational activities of the One Year Interior Design course are divided into Basic learning activities, Subject-specific learning activities and Integrative learning activities. According to the specific nature of the course and its academic outcomes, the training activities are related to both the professional practice and its cultural context.

1o. Study Plan

1 MODULE Contemporary design - 6 CF The course examines the contemporary design scene, paying particular attention to cutting-edge interior design projects such as hotels, restaurants, showrooms and residences, as well as furnishings for private residences and public venues, and the materials used. Contemporary art - 4 CF Here, we take a critical look at the movements and the artists that are most interesting in terms of language and expression, and how they sometimes influence design and provide creative ideas. Design trends 1 - 6 CF The course provides students with the analytical, cultural and economic tools needed to identify and analyse trends in design. The course prepares students for the Salone del Mobile furniture show in Milan by providing an investigative methodology. After the show, students are guided in bringing together the gathered material into a synthesis of the new trends observed. Materials trends 1 - 4 CF We take a look at the impressive choice of materials available to designers, analyzing new materials and surface finishes in the workshop and visiting the showrooms of the most important Italian producers. Graphic Design 1 - 6 CF The course shows a variety of digital tools for the correct representation and organization of materials produced in parallel projects.

2 MODULE: PROJECT Theory of the Perception and Psychology of Form - 4 CF Theory of perception looks at a variety of philosophical and scientific explanations of how we process visual stimuli into a coherent image of reality. The psychology of form is a set of visual-organization spatial laws that connect stimuli into distinct forms, perceived as a whole. The course creates awareness of the fascinating complexity of the eye and the world of forms and makes clear that research by designers and psychologists has brought out deeper questions concerning the perception and creation of forms. Sketching - 4 CF The course teaches free-hand techniques for showing architectural notions: the pencil is used as a means of expression from the beginning in order to give discipline to classroom skills. The first exercises will be to submit free-hand drawings in order to learn how to perceive proportions, sizes and forms. Technical Drawing and Design - 8 CF This course aims to teach the geometric perception of spaces/products and is a preparation for the use of software for two- and three-dimensional design. Techniques for the two-dimensional representation of buildings and isometric views for the threedimensional representation of architectural space will be studied. The course looks at working-method issues, methods for taking measurements, and techniques for the processing and preparation of surveys. The course teaches the use of AutoCAD software, a fundamental tool for the two-dimensional planning of objects and buildings. Project Methodology - 4 CF This course will show ways of tackling the design of a project using the method/process designed by Bruno Munari, which shows how to break down the overall question of a project into sub-problems in order to address and analyse all the factors involved in the design: the behaviour and desires of the people, the market, the functionality, the ergonomics, the technical and technological considerations, the form, and the sensory aspects involved during the development of the project.
7

Materials Technology - 6 CF The theory lessons are designed to break down the construction elements and the finishes of a housing unit in order to get to know the methodological processes and characteristics of the materials in order to provide a basic knowledge that can be applied in the field of interior design. Then, with particular reference to the aesthetic and technical aspects, all the natural and artificial materials used to create an interior space will be studied. Workshop 1 - 4 CF This workshop will design a temporary structure in a predetermined area for a furnishings manufacturer for an event during Design Week in Milan. Workshop 2 - 6 CF Following the visit to the Salone Nautico boat show and the building fairs, a project dealing with the world of boats or a small space/building will be carried out. Italian language - 2 CF A basic Italian course during the year to enable students to communicate and understand the Italian way of life. Seminars - 6 CF The seminars provide a platform for discussion on the perception of design through different perspectives, from architects, lighting designers and interior designers.

2 MODULE: TRENDS Sociology - 4 CF Analysis of social phenomena and consumer behaviour, with particular emphasis on differences in lifestyles. Theory of the Perception and Psychology of Form - 4 CF Theory of perception looks at a variety of philosophical and scientific explanations of how we process visual stimuli into a coherent image of reality. Design trends 2 - 8 CF This course aims to refine the analytical approach developed in the first part of the course, establishing a methodology that leads to defining the overall approach of the design. The influence from two important sectors of Italian design, boats and interiors, helps to provide the even wider possibility of carrying out a more complete investigation of current trends. Materials trends 2 - 6 CF The goal is to understand the expressive characteristics of each material analysed, through a cross-reading that is the product of an environmental consideration combined with a correct historical approach. The objective is to coordinate the theoretical and practical lessons in order to encourage an awareness of the technical methods for using materials and the proper use of the materials, surface finishes and patterns that are a feature of designing interiors.

Graphic Design 2 - 4 CF This course is a natural continuation of the first part and aims, through the use of digital programmes to organize the layout and display and to check the verbal explanation, to refine communication skills regarding the collected material related to trends. Workshop 1 - 4 CF This workshop will design a temporary structure in a predetermined area for a furnishings company for an event during Design Week in Milan. Workshop 2 - 6 CF Following the visit to the Salone Nautico boat show and the building fairs, a project dealing with the world of boats or a space/building will be carried out to determine present trends. Italian language - 2CF A basic Italian course during the year to enable students to communicate and understand the Italian way of life. Seminars - 6 CF The seminars provide a platform for discussion on the perception of design through different perspectives, from architects, lighting designers and interior designers.
