The United Nations
Origin: The United Nations Organization is an
association of states which have pledged themselves to maintain international peace and security and cooperate in solving international political, economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems towards achieving this end.

The United Nations officially came into existence on Oct. 24,1945, with the deposit of the requisite number of ratifications of the Charter, the constituting instrument of the UN with the US Department of State. United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 Oct. each year. The headquarters of the UNO is in New York.

The General Assembly The Security Council The Economic and Social Council (ECO-SOC) The Trusteeship Council The International Court of Justice Secretary General of the UN United Nations Member States Specialized Agencies of the UN Important Years Observed by UNO Contemporary United Nations International Decade

Objects: To maintain international peace and security.

To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and selfdetermination of peoples. To cooperate in solving international economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in attaining these. common ends.

Flag : White UN Emblem (two bent olive branches open at the top and in between them in world map) on a
light blue background. Official Languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Structure
The United Nations has six principal organs according to the Charter which are indicated as below

General Council
The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations. Comprising all 193 Members of the United Nations, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter. The Assembly meets in regular session intensively from September to December each year, and thereafter as required.

13 | P a g e

Security Council
The Presidency of the Security Council is held in turn by the members of the Security Council in the English alphabetical order of their names. Each President holds office for one calendar month. Ten non-permament members, elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms and not eligible for immediate re-election. The number of non-permanent members was increased from six to ten by an amendment of the Charter which came into force in 1965. Each Council member has one vote. Decisions on procedural matters are made by an affirmative vote of at least nine of the 15 members. Decisions on substantive matters require nine votes, including the concurring votes of all five permanent members. This is the rule of "great Power unanimity", often referred to as the "veto" power.

Membership in 2012
The Council is composed of five permanent members China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States and ten non-permament members (with year of term's end): Azerbaijan (2013) Colombia (2012) Germany (2012) Guatemala (2013) India (2012) Morocco (2013) Pakistan (2013) Portugal (2012) South Africa (2012) Togo (2013)

Economic and Social Council

ECOSOC at Work: The worlds economic, social and environmental challenges are ECOSOCs concern. A founding UN Charter body established in 1946, the Council is the place where such issues are discussed and debated, and policy recommendations issued. As such, ECOSOC has broad responsibility for some 70% of the human and financial resources of the entire UN system, including 14 specialized agencies, 9 functional commissions, and five regional commissions. Meetings The Council holds regular meetings throughout the year with prominent academics, business sector representatives and 3,200+ registered non-governmental organizations. ECOSOCs biggest gathering, however, is reserved for the summer, when it holds its annual, month-long substantive session in July. Held in alternate years in New York and Geneva, the session is divided into 5 segments High-level; Coordination; Operational Activities; Humanitarian Affairs; and General which cover both global issues and technical, administrative questions.

Trusteeship Council
The Trusteeship Council suspended operation on 1 November 1994, with the independence of Palau, the last remaining United Nations trust territory, on 1 October 1994. By a resolution adopted on 25 May 1994, the Council amended its rules of procedure to drop the obligation to meet annually and agreed to meet as occasion required -- by its decision or the decision of its President, or at the request of a majority of its members or the General Assembly or the Security Council.

The Secteriate
The Secretariat an international staff working in duty stations around the world carries out the diverse day-today work of the Organization. It services the other principal organs of the United Nations and administers the programmes and policies laid down by them. At its head is the Secretary-General, who is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council for a five-year, renewable term. The duties carried out by the Secretariat are as varied as the problems dealt with by the United Nations. These range from administering peacekeeping operations to mediating international disputes, from surveying economic and social trends and problems to preparing studies on human rights and sustainable development. Secretariat staff also inform the world's communications media about the work of the United Nations; organize international conferences on issues of worldwide concern; and interpret speeches and translate documents into the Organization's official languages. As of 30 June 2010, the Secretariat had some 44,000 staff members around the world . As international civil servants, staff members and the Secretary-General answer to the United Nations alone for their activities, and take an oath not to seek or receive instructions from any Government or outside authority. Under the Charter, each Member State undertakes to respect the exclusively international character of the responsibilities of the Secretary-General and the staff and to refrain from seeking to influence them improperly in the discharge of their duties. The United Nations, while headquartered in New York, maintains a significant presence in Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva, Nairobi, Santiago and Vienna, and has offices all over the world. The UN currently has 15 peace operations, deployed on four continents. Serving the cause of peace in a violent world is a dangerous occupation. Since the founding of the United Nations, hundreds of brave men and women have given their lives in its service.
