SINGLE PHASE SEMI CONVERTER WITH R ,RL LOADS FOR CONTINUOUS CONDUCTION MODES
AIM : To perform the operation of semi converter with R, RL and to observe the output voltage waveform across the load.
APPARATUS REQUIRED :

a)Single phase half controlled trainer kit b)CRO c)Regulated power supply d) R load-120K, RL loads (560) & autotransformer for inductive effect. FORMULAE USED : For R-Load : V0=(Vm/)(1+cos) For RL-Load: V0=(2Vm/)cos THEORY : A half controlled converter or semi converter uses mixture of diodes and thyristors and there is a limited control over the level of dc output voltage. A semi converter is one quadrant converter. A one quadrant converter has one polarity of dc output voltage and current at its output terminals. The thyristor is a semiconductor device that can be turned on via a gate signal. By varying the firing angle ,the phase relationship between the start of the load current and the supply voltage can be controlled. Hence, the term phase control is used for controlling the load current.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION : The circuit arrangement of a single phase half controlled converter is shown in figure.

In R load, During the positive half-cycle, thyristor T1 is forward biased. When thyristor T1 is fired at t=, the load is connected to the input supply through T1 and D2 during the period t .During the negative half-cycle , thyristor T2 is forward biased at t= + , the load is conned to the input supply through T2 and D1 during the period from (+ ) t 2 . In RL load, During the positive half-cycle, thyristor T1 is forward biased. When thyristor T1 is fired at t=, the load is connected to the input supply through T1 and D2 during the period t . At t= , diode D1 is forward biased. So, D2 is turns off. When D1 turn on , the load current passes through D1and T1 during the period from t (+ ). During the negative half-cycle, thyristor T2 is forward biased at t= +, the load is conned to the input supply through T2 and D1 during the period from (+ ) t 2 . When D2 turn on, the load current passes through D2and T2 during the period from 2 t (2+ ).

PROCEDURE : 1) Switch on the mains supply to the firing circuit. 2) And observe the trigger outputs by varying the firing angle potentiometer and by operating ON/OFF switch. 3) Make sure that the trigger pulses are coming properly before connecting to the power circuit. 4) Connect the trigger pulses from the firing circuit to the corresponding SCRs in the power circuit. 5) Connect AC supply to the power circuit through step down transformer (24V-0-24V) provided in the unit. 6) Connect the load at load points. 7) Switch ON the step down transformer supply and trigger outputs and observe the output voltage waveform across the load by varying firing angle potentiometer provided. TABULAR COLUMN: For R load: S.NO T T = (T/T)*180 V0(measured) V0(calculated)

For RL load:

S.NO

= (T/T)*180

V0(measured)
