Essay

All poems have similar points that make them what they are. Each poem

has one of many literary terms. Specific terms help to enhance the detail of “The

Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe. The first literary term to help enhance “The Raven” is

imagery. The second term to create a deeper meaning in “The Raven” is mode.

The final literary term that can be used is setting.

One could support that the literary term imagery helped to enhance the

poem “the Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe. The main form of imagery in this poem is

the raven itself. “In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore;”(Poe

300). This shows imagery because while Poe was rambling about his long lost

Lenore the only living soul around was the Raven. Another example is shown in

the poem of “The Raven”. “on the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have

flown before”(Poe 300). This proves imagery of “The Raven” because the raven

Is Poe’s last hope of having a companion. Both quotes support that there is a

deeper meaning than a lonely man talking to an estranged raven.

The second literary term that could help enhance “The Raven” meaning is

the mode. The mode of this poem is how Poe responds to each passage he

writes. “here I open wide the door;- Darkness there and nothing more”(Poe 299).

By answering the passage with darkness a person could get the sense that

Edgar Allen Poe was depressed. On line 36 another ending passage shows the

mode. “Tis the wind and nothing more” (Poe 299). This proves how quiet and

lonely poem was sitting as he wrote this poem.

The final literary term to help enhance this poem would be the setting. “Ah,

distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December” (Poe 298). This enhances

the story because it gives the reader an idea when the Poe was writing “The

Raven”. The beginning of a poem is one of the best places to look for the setting.

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary” (Poe 298).

This enhances the poem because it gives the image of the night and long it must

have taken him to write this poem.

In Conclusion, one could say that all poems have unique qualities which

make them what they are. In each poem a literary term is used to help enhance

the reader’s attention. Edgar Allen Poe in his poem of “The Raven” used these

literary terms to enhance the poem. One of the literary terms he used was

imagery. The second term Poe used was the mode. This setting was because it

was one of the literary terms that helped him to enhance his poetry the most

giving readers the mental image he is writing about.
