EOG Math Vocabulary Ordered pair = A pair of numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate plane.

Factors = A number that is multiplied by another to find the product. Volume = The number of cubic units that can fill a container. Formula = In a spreadsheet, a set of instructions that tells the computer to do a calculation or to perform a task. Composite number = A whole number greater than one with more than two wholenumber factors. Equivalent = Equals/same. Meter = A metric unit for measuring length. Chord = A line segment whose endpoints lie on a circle Exponents = A number that indicates the operation of repeated multiplication. Area = The number of square units that covers a shape or figure. Angle = A figure formed by two rays that meet at a common endpoint called a vertex. Circumference = The distance around the circle Center = The point inside a circle that is the same distance from each point on the circle. Divisible = A number is divisible by another if the quotient is a whole number and the remainder is zero. Degrees = A unit for measuring angles. Digit = The 10 symbols, 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,and 9. Denominator = The number below the fractions bar in a fraction. Diameter = A chord that passes through the center of a circle. Estimate = An answer that is close to the exact answer and is found by rounding. Fraction = A number used to name a part of a group or a whole. Line Segment = Two points on a line and all the points between those two points. Mean = The average of a group of numbers. Median = The middle number or the mean of the two middle numbers of a group of numbers arranged in numerical order. Mode = The numbers that occur most often in a collection of data. Multiple = The product of a given number and a whole number. Numerator = The number above the fraction bar in a fraction. Number lines = A line on which every point represents a real number. Decimal = A number with one or more places to the right of a decimal point. Rounding = Expressing a number to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and so on. Solve = To find all the solutions of an equation. Average = The quotient found by dividing the sum of a group of numbers by the number of addends. Sum = The answer in addition. Exponential Notation = Using an exponent to express a number. Reduce = To make smaller.

Patterns = Sequence of elements that have an underlying rule or order. Population = A collection of objects or group of people about whom information is gathered. Whole number = the whole numbers are 0,1,2,3.... Sequence = A sequence is a set of numbers that follow a pattern. Common = Same Rounding = Expressing a number to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and so on. Solve = To find all the solutions of an equation. Average = The quotient found by dividing the sum of a group of numbers by the number of addends. Sum = The answer in addition. Exponential Notation = Using an exponent to express a number. Product = The answer in a multiplication problem. Probability (P) = The chance that an event will occur expressed as the ration of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes. Prime factorization= A number written as the product of all its prime factors. Prime number = A whole number greater than one whose only factors are itself and one. Perimeter = The distance around a polygon. Ray = A part of a line that has one endpoint and goes on forever in only one directions. Rotations = A turn of a figure about a fixed point without reflection. Radius = A line segment with one endpoint at the center of a circle and the other endpoint on the circle. Solution = The value of a variable that makes an equation true. Standard Form = The form in which numerals are usually written, with digits 0 through 9, separated into periods by commas. Simplify = Reducing to lowest terms. Vertex = The point where two rays meet. Diagram = A graphic design that explains rather than represents. Distance = An extent of area or an advance along a route measured linearly. Grid = A network of uniformly spaced horizontal and perpendicular lines. Exterior = Being on an outside surface. Interior = Lying, occurring or functioning within limiting boundaries. Connect = To join or fasten together usually by something intervening. Represents = To serve as a sign or symbol. Series = A number of things or events of the same class coming one after another. Length = The longer or longest dimension of an object. Quantities = An indefinite amount or number. Shaded = To darken. Values = Relative worth, utility, or importance. Experiment = Test, trial.

Measurement = The act of process or measuring. Reduce = To make smaller. Remainder = The number left after a subtraction. Clockwise = In the direction in which the hands of a clock rotate as viewed from in front or as if standing on a clock face. Subtract = To take away by or as if by deducting. Calculated = To determine by mathematical processes. Conclude = To reach as a logically necessary end by reasoning. Divide = To subject to the operation of finding how many times it contains another number of quantity. Multiply = To find the product of by multiplication. Displaying = To put or spread before the view. Original = The source or cause from which something arises.
