Saline Salutes honors communitys all-stars

Business owner Jill Durnen named Citizen of the Year

ive Saline residents were honored for their contributions to the community April 13 at the 23rd annual Saline Salutes dinner and awards ceremony at Saline High School. Jill Durnen, Joseph Labuta, Cindy Czubko, Stan Poet and Maura McCann were all recognized by the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce for their work throughout the community. Durnen was named Citizen of The Year for her significant volunteerism within the Saline community for the past year. She has been involved in several organizations, including the Holiday Parade, the Main Street Project and previous Saline Salutes committees.

She was surprised to receive the award, Durnen said, but her experience working on the Saline Salutes committee in previous years gave her an advantage. I was really surprised to be nominated, she said. And then when they called to tell me I actually was a recipient, I got a little nervous because Id been to this event before and I knew Id have to get up and give a speech. Its weird to be over on this side, but then its also nice because I know what to expect. Durnen, who grew up in Saline,

said giving back to the community has always been important for her. I own a family business in town, she said. So, giving back to Saline is a big thing for me. Joseph Labuta received the Lifetime Achievement Award this year. He plays events for free around Saline with New Horizons Band and promotes a vibrant music scene in the community. Labuta said he views the award as not only recognition for him, but for New Horizons and everyone involved with the band. I think the big thing is the recognition, he said. Not so much for me personally, but of the band and what weve been able to achieve. Im still amazing and overwhelmed Im being recognized this way. New Horizons, Labuta said, was an effort put forth by many people, not just him. Czubko was awarded the George A. Anderson Vision Award, which honors volunteer work with a governmental agency.
