4 Campus

By Frank Garza
University Boulevard was full of life. Students, faculty, and staff eagerly awaited receiving their wrist bands so that they could participate in the activities and enjoy some food. People were throwing basketballs into hoops, rock climbing, laughing, and just having a good time. The Fun in the Sun Expo, a health fair, provided students with a fun way to learn about healthy choices and had many info booths, activities, and food last Wednesday. Its good for the students. They can be active with the games and obstacle courses. Also, they can be knowledgeable about health thanks to all the vendors, said Javier Mendoza, Academic Advisor for Upper-Bound Math and Science students.

Fun in the Sun event promotes healthy living

The event, organized by Healthy Javelinas, sought to bring the AMK community together for a day of fun and to celebrate fitness and being healthy, said Paul Rios, a member of Healthy Javelinas. It serves as an educational tool to all the students. All the vendors [had] information that pertained to [students] health, wellness, and well-being, said Maricela Bowyer, Office Manager for Student Health and Wellness. The fair was bustling well after it started, even though it was very hot out. I like that it [was] free, I like that I got to learn about different things, I [liked] all the activities; its a great way to stay active, said Meghan Zauzig, Senior. Healthy Javelinas, thats what its all about. Getting out here and having fun and celebrating being healthy, Rios said.

Art auction to help raise money for students to study abroad

By Lauren Hernandez
Does your room need a little art? Come check out and support artists of AMK as the Art, Communications, and Theatre Departments host a benefit art auction on Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Center. The auction will help raise the remaining money to allow students to study abroad in Graz, Austria along with Art Professor Santa Barraza. Barraza was invited to teach an exhibit at the University of Graz in Austria and when her students asked to join her, she immediately began working to make it happen. I always believe in supporting the students and having them interact with other artists and opportunities that I have, Barraza said. After talking to Mary Lou Salazar, director of International Studies, they created this opportunity to become a study abroad program. Salazar and Barraza came to the idea of creating an art auction to help raise the money for the students. We invited all the faculty and professional artists, that we know of, to submit or to donate art work, Barraza said. The students who are going also donated artwork. Artists from California and Mexico as well as lots of local artists from South Texas will be donating their artwork to support the students. passion for art. Most of the artists there live off of their art, said Barraza. I think that was a great opportunity for my art students to see that they can live off of their work and there is a lot of respect for the arts there. The auction will bring lots of different kinds of art and have reasonable prices so anyone can give what they can for the students. Barraza will also be donating her art as well. We need about $40,000 for all of the students to attend, said Barraza. But even if we raise half of it, that would be great!
