3D Effect Rendering objects in perspective is a time-honored way to bring the illusion of depth to printed materials. Now, Illustrator CS makes it easy to add 3D elements to your work, whether youre producing a logo, a package design, or a title for a video production. Using the integrated new 3D Effect, you can transform type and other shapes you draw into 3D objects, and then rotate them in space and even customize their lighting. 3D shapes are live, so changes you make to the original 2D object are automatically reflected in the 3D shape. The effect provides an intuitive interface for creating just the look you want, and the Preview option lets you see changes interactively. For example, you can see how a new 3D element looks in the context of your artwork as you spin it using the track cube, adjust how it is lit, and map artwork onto its surfaces. Depending on the look you want to achieve, you can extrude, revolve, or rotate shapes. The Extrude option extends the shape back into space by adding sides and a top, and is ideal for creating cubes, 3D type, and other regular geometric shapes. When you use the Extrude command, you can also make the edges of the object appear chiseled by selecting a Bevel option. Beveled edges are widely used for designing buttons and other types of navigational aids, and can also add an interesting look to 3D type and other objects. The Revolve option is perfect for turning a simple path into a 3D shape by revolving it around a central axisideal for producing bottles, glasses, and other circular shapes. The 3D Rotate option is great for transforming a shape in 3D space, and also enables you to map artwork onto a shapes surfaces.

The new 3D Effect makes it easy to create 3D type, objects, and more. Because the effect is live, you can make changes easily at any time without affecting the elements 3D appearance.

Use options in the 3D Effect to transform shapes you draw in Illustrator into 3D artwork. As you work, you can interactively control the appearance of lighting and other object attributes.

To create this packaging mockup for a wine bottle, we drew an outline (far left), used the 3D effect to rotate it (center), and then mapped a label that was saved as a symbol (right) onto the bottles surface. A separate 3D object was created for the cork.

Controlling the Surface Appearance and Lighting for 3D Shapes You can make your 3D artwork look more realistic by adjusting the way it is illuminated and by controlling its surface characteristics. You can shine as many lights as you like on a 3D object, and you can control the intensity of each light individually; you can also select a shadow color thats used for all of the lights illuminating an object. You can also manipulate the surface appearance of the objects you create to create a range of looks. Plastic Shading is the default option, and provides both Matte and Gloss controls that determine how shiny or soft the highlights on the object appear. By adjusting these controls and combining them with other illustrative effects, you can simulate a wide variety of surfaces. For example, you can create the appearance of a metallic surface by illuminating a high-contrast gradient fill with dramatic lighting. You can also use Diffuse Shading, choose the Wireframe option, or create 3D shapes with no shading at all. Mapping Artwork Onto 3D Shapes One of the most exciting aspects of the new 3D support in Illustrator CS is the ability to map artwork onto the surfaces of the 3D shapes you create. For example, you can apply labels to packaging mock-ups so your clients can visualize how a design will work in context. Any artwork you create in Illustrator can be applied to the face of a 3D shapeall you need to do is save it as a symbol (a feature introduced in Illustrator 10). Taking 3D Shapes Further Once youve created a 3D shape youre pleased with, you can use several other features in Illustrator to take your work even further. If the look of your 3D shape is something youd like to use again, you can save the formatting as a graphic style, and then apply it to any other object to quickly recreate the same appearance. You can also modify the component shapes of the 3D object by choosing Object > Expand Appearance. Or, you can create eye-catching 3D animations such as the one below by blending two 3D objects, then exporting the blend as a Macromedia Flash (SWF) file. Because the 3D Effect is fully integrated into Illustrator, you can combine it with these and other features to create truly eye-catching designs.

To create transparent dice (right), we started with a simple square that is partially transparent. Using the 3D Effect, we extruded the square, mapped the dot pattern for the numbers onto each face, and adjusted the lighting. To create the animation of rolling dice (far right), we blended two instances of the artwork, then exported the results as a Macromedia Flash (SWF) animation.

Scribble Effect Have fun making vector artwork look loose and hand-drawn with the new live Scribble Effect. Great for adding a child-like charm to artwork, the Scribble Effect is also handy for quickly making formal design elements look casual and friendly, masking images, creating scratchboard-like illustrations, adding cross-hatching to a design, or creating animated wiggly lines. If you blend two shapes that have the Scribble Effect applied, then export them as Macromedia Flash (SWF) files, you can create jumpy, attention-grabbing animations, such as the example in the sidebar at left. You can also apply the Scribble Effect to clip art and other objects to quickly add personality.

By blending two objects with the Scribble Effect applied, then exporting the results as a SWF file, you can create animated scribbles.

Because the effect makes it easy to control how far outside the lines of the original shape the scribble is drawn, as well as how straight or loopy the line is, you can quickly create interesting irregular shapes to use as image masks. And like other live effects in Illustrator, you can edit the object the effect is applied to without having to reapply or modify the effect, save the effect as part of a graphic style, and more.

Applying the Scribble Effect to vector elements adds interest instantly, and its a great tool for adding texture to a design.

Professionally designed content in the box Illustrator CS includes more than 200 real-world, professionally designed templatesincluding 50 Japanese language templatesthat help you start typical projects quickly. In addition to providing a range of design ideas, templates include custom-sized artboards, layers, styles, swatches, symbols, and more, so new users can use them to learn new production techniques. For example, you can choose from five different CD and DVD design options, and each option includes separate templates for booklets, disc labels, tray cards, and other elements. For designers who prefer to start with a blank page, a series of blank templates make starting typical projects such as business cards a snap. In addition, more than 100 free OpenType fonts (including Roman, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean fonts) and professional swatch and symbols libraries are included. Accessing free content is easier as well, thanks to the new Welcome screen (see page 10).

Templates included with Illustrator provide a variety of designs for common projects, such as (starting on the top row from left) a business card, a DVD disc label, front and back for a postcard, a Web page layout, and a gift certificate.

Use Essential Design Tools

The industry-standard graphics tool, Adobe Illustrator CS brings a new level of refinement to the design tools at the heart of your work. Because you use them day in and day out on nearly every project you create, Adobe has re-invented the typography tools in Illustrator CS to be more intuitive, more flexible, and more powerfulso you can use type to communicate your message more effectively. Offering industry-leading support for OpenType fonts and a powerful new approach to text composition, Illustrator CS helps you streamline many of the tasks traditionally required to produce exquisite, expressive typography. Other new type features include support for character and paragraph styles, a WYSIWYG font menu, new text box options, and much more. Illustrator CS can also save documents as templates, so you can re-use your designs easily. With Illustrator CS, your path from initial inspiration to finished design is more direct than ever. All-New Type Capabilities For more than a decade, Adobe Illustrator has set the standard for typographical excellence, and illustrators and designers who use Illustrator create type treatments of astonishing diversity and quality. Now Adobe Illustrator CS introduces a redesigned text engine and forward-looking features that make it easier than ever to set great-looking type. Inspired by innovations in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator CS gives you the power to take your type to a whole new level. Character and paragraph styles, support for the advanced layout features built into OpenType fonts, automatic ligatures, optical kerning, and a whole new text composition engine these are just a few of the new type features youll find in this release. From superior text composition that eliminates rivers of white space and bad line breaks in paragraphs to ensuring that ligatures are used and punctuation is nicely positioned, youll quickly find that Illustrator CS is indispensable when you need to set good-looking type. Paragraph and Character Styles Format text quickly and easily using the paragraph and character styles in Adobe Illustrator CS. Styles help you maintain high production standards by ensuring that all of the text in a design uses consistent formatting, whether for entire paragraphs or shorter segments, such as run-in heads or words that require particular emphasis. Styles also save you time because they enable you to apply a rich set of formatting attributes with a single click of a mouse. You can define and work with as many styles as a documents design requires, and styles can include combinations of formatting attributes that range from the simplesay, a font choiceto the elaborate. In addition to standard formatting options, both paragraph and character styles can include advanced OpenType options, such as titling, contextual, and swash alternates; ordinals; fractions; and discretionary ligatures. For example, you might define a style that automatically reformats number combinations as fractions.

New type features in Illustrator CS make creating logotypes and other type treatments easier than ever.

New support for character and paragraph styles helps you make short work of formatting textintensive documents.

Styles can also help ensure fast, accurate text formatting even when a large project team is working on a series of documents with interrelated designs. To share paragraph and character styles with colleagues, you simply make the Illustrator file accessible, so team members can load styles from it as easily as they would load color swatches. You can also save styles as part of an Illustrator template file; for more information about the new template file format, please see page 10.

OpenType Font Support Adobe Illustrator CS introduces advanced support for OpenType fonts. The OpenType font standard was developed jointly by Adobe and Microsoft, and brings the advantages of both the TrueType and PostScript font formats into a new format that takes advantage of Unicode character encoding. In addition to expanding the number of glyphsvisual representations of individual character designsa font can contain from hundreds to tens of thousands, OpenType fonts offer two primary benefits: they make sharing documents across platforms easier because the same font file is used by Mac OS and Windows, and they enable you to set distinctive type by providing easy, context-sensitive access to the special characters designed into a font.

The Adobe OpenType font Caflisch Script Pro includes a rich selection of contextual alternates. The top example uses default glyphs; in the bottom example, the Contextual Alternates option was selected, so alternate glyphs and ligatures are automatically used when appropriate.

Access OpenType features from the new OpenType palette.

In Illustrator CS, you can choose to have standard numbers (left) automatically reformatted as fractions (right) when working with OpenType fonts that support arbitrary fractions.

The text in the top line uses the standard version of Adobes Minion font. Adobe Minion Pro (one of the OpenType fonts included with Illustrator CS) offers richer results. Illustrator CS automatically uses standard ligatures (ff and ffl in this example). Discretionary Ligatures and Swash options were selected from the OpenType palette, so the st ligature and swash version of the lowercase e are automatically inserted.

The top example uses the default figure glyphs for Adobes Warnock Pro font (an OpenType font available from Adobe). In the bottom example, OpenType options for Proportional Oldstyle figures and Swash characters were selected. The results are visually distinctive, typographically correct, and required no extra time or effort.

More about OpenType fonts The OpenType format is an extension of the TrueType SFNT format that also can support Adobe PostScript font data and new typographic features. OpenType fonts can include an expanded character set and layout features, providing broader linguistic support and more precise typographic control. Feature-rich Adobe OpenType fonts can be distinguished by the word Pro, which is part of the font name and appears in application font menus. OpenType fonts can be installed and used alongside PostScript Type 1 and TrueType fonts. The Adobe Type Library is now available in OpenType format. To view or buy these fonts, please visit www.adobe.com/type.

OpenType fonts use a single font file for both Macintosh and Windows computers, so you can move files from one platform to another without worrying about font substitution and other problems that cause text to reflow. A single OpenType font file can also include many more glyphs (a glyph is a visual representation of a character) than other font formats, including glyphs previously only available in expert sets and characters for non-western languages such as Greek and Cyrillic. Because OpenType fonts dont assume that a character is represented by only one glyph (as earlier font formats did), programs like Illustrator that provide advanced OpenType support allow you to substitute one version of a letterform for another. For example, the lowercase f might appear as the default character, a small cap, with other characters as part of a ligature (a glyph that combines multiple letters into a single visual form, such as fi ), or as a swash with fancy flourishes. In addition to these general benefits, Illustrator CS includes special OpenType commands for automatic context-sensitive substitution of alternate glyphs. When you select any of these options, Illustrator automatically replaces the default glyph for a particular character or combination of characters with any contextually appropriate alternative. For example, if you have the Fractions option selected and type 3/16 in an OpenType font that supports arbitrary fractions, the numbers will be automatically reformatted as a fraction; if you select the Swash option and the selected OpenType font includes alternate Swash glyphs, they will be used. To enable you to use OpenType features in your work right away, Illustrator CS includes more than 100 fonts from 24 western-language OpenType font families, as well as Japanese, Chinese, and Korean OpenType font families: Bernhard Modern, Birch, Brush Script, Adobe Caslon Pro, Century Old Style, Charlemagne, Chaparral Pro, Courier, Adobe Garamond Pro, Giddyup, Letter Gothic, Lithos Pro, Mesquite, Minion Pro, Myriad Pro, Myriad, News Gothic, Nueva, Prestige Elite, Rosewood, Stencil, Trajan Pro, Viva, Wood Type Ornaments, Kozuka Mincho, Kozuka Gothic, Adobe Ming, and Adobe Myungjo.

Automatic Ligatures and Smart Quotes Illustrator CS automatically sets standard ligatures, such as fi and fl, as you type using any OpenType font a small detail that can make a big difference in making your type appear professional. To help streamline production processes, Illustrator spell-checks and hyphenates words that use these ligatures just as it would standard letterforms. For example, the word waffle would use the ffl glyph, but would still be spell-checked as though it used individual letters. Illustrator CS also sets typographically correct quotation marks and apostrophes as you type. Easy Access to Alternate Glyphs The new Glyphs palette in Illustrator CS offers a fast, accessible way to see all of the glyphs in a font. The Show option on the palette lets you see the entire font or select subsets of related characters, such as Ornaments, Terminal Forms, Discretionary Ligatures, and more. Simply double-clicking inserts the selected glyph. Previously, you could access these special characters only by memorizing keyboard shortcuts or manually formatting individual characters using a separate expert version of a font that included the character you wanted.

Use the Glyphs palette to insert alternate glyphs. You can browse all of the glyphs available, or choose a subset by selecting options from the Show menu. A small arrow in the lower-right corner of a character indicates that alternate glyphs are available.

Columns and Rows and Other Area-Text Enhancements Quickly produce multi-column designs by defining columns and rows in any text area. Specify the number of columns and rows, the width and height of those rows and columns, whether or not theyre a fixed size, and the size of the gutter. You can also determine the size of the inset between the text and the object containing it, how the baseline is set, and whether text flows between linked objects from right to left or left to right.

Optical Kerning and Optical Margin Alignment With many fonts, the default spacing between characters is visually uneven or crowded, even when the kerning pairs built into the font are used. Designers have long used manual kerning to adjust the space between awkward-looking pairs of letters, but the process is time-consuming. To help balance your desire for quality against your drive to meet schedules, Illustrator CS introduces two features that automate kerning:
The text on top uses the default spacing between letters, and certain letter combinations look awkward. Applying the optical kerning option from the Character palette (bottom) instantly fine-tunes the visual relationships between pairs of letters.

Optical kerningThe new optical kerning option in the Character palette automatically kerns text to produce optimal spacing. When applied to a word, line, or paragraph, Illustrator analyzes the visual characteristics of text and automatically determines the ideal spacing for the characterseven when that text mixes different fonts and font sizes. Kerning is cumulative, so you can always adjust optically kerned text to suit your eye.

8 Optical Margin AlignmentThis option automatically adjusts the position of punctuation and text charac-

ters at either end of a line to make the edges of a text block look more visually even. You use Optical Margin Alignment most often to hang punctuation, such as quotation marks and hyphens, but other characters are subtly shifted as well in order to produce typographically good-looking results.
Shifting punctuation marks slightly outside the edge of the text area creates a more even-looking edge. The example on the left uses Optical Margin Alignment, and punctuation marks such as the opening quote and the hyphens on the first two lines extend slightly beyond the text area to allow the letters to form a more even line. In contrast, the punctuation in the example on the right is visually distracting, and creates an irregular edge.

Every-line Composer for Optimized Paragraph Composition The new Every-line Composer in Adobe Illustrator CS gives you the ability to produce exquisitely typeset text without fine-tuning line breaks by hand. The main goal in setting longer runs of textin brochures, packaging, and other materials you create with Illustratoris to produce the most elegant line breaks you can with minimal hyphenation, consistent word and letter spacing, and no distracting rivers of white space flowing from line to line. The Every-line Composer, a unique Adobe composition engine used in Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop, examines all of the text in an area to determine the best combination of line breaks across the entire run. Because it can optimize earlier lines to avoid unattractive breaks later ona capability unique to Adobes professional graphics applicationsthe Every-line Composer automatically produces text with even spacing, consistent line lengths, minimal hyphenation, and few if any visible rivers.
Every-line Composer
The Adobe Every-line Composer (left) produces even-looking text that is pleasing to the eye and easy to read. Because it composes text one line at a time, the Singleline Composer (right) results in choppy line lengths, especially in narrow columns. Notice also that the use of Optical Margin Alignment (left example only) and OpenType features (both examples) create a polished look in keeping with the authors sophisticated wit.

Single-line Composer

Illustrator CS also includes the Single-line Composer, which applies hyphenation and justification settings to one line of text at a time, just as Illustrator did in the past. Both the Every-line Composer and the Single-line Composer are commands on the Paragraph palette popup menu. Custom Tab Leaders With Illustrator CS, you can customize the dot type and pattern for tab leaders, or you can design your own graphics to use as tab leaders. In addition, Illustrator now lets you set unlimited numbers of tabs.

WYSIWYG Font Menu The Font menu in Adobe Illustrator CS displays each font face you have installed, so you can choose the fonts you want to use visually. Experimenting with different faces is now faster and more direct, and you can see at a glance what format a font uses (for example, the green and black O indicates an OpenType font). If you prefer, you can also disable this option. Expanded Support for Japanese Typography Adobe Illustrator is the standard for design in most countries, and support for file sharing between different language versions has long made it possible to share designs globally. Adobe Illustrator CS expands this support with more sophisticated controls for formatting Japanese text. This includes customizable mojikumi rule sets for determining optimal character spacing, as well as editable kinsoku shori rule sets for handling Japanese punctuation, characters that cannot begin or end lines, and characters that cant be separated. Illustrator also includes other enhancements, such as automated tate-chu-yoko controls, a composite font editor, an IME editor for entering Japanese text, and a preference for hiding or showing Japanese text options in Roman versions of Illustrator. New Path Type Options Illustrator CS expands your options for designing text on a path. The new Path Type submenu on the Type menu provides five pre-set alignment options, and the Path Text Options dialog box includes additional options for controlling the position of the text relative to the path. Now you can create a wider range of looks for projects that use path text with a minimum of effort.

Path type is now more flexible, thanks to new built-in formatting options. You can also control character alignment with precision using options in the Path Type Options dialog box. Here, we used the Rainbow (top), Skew (middle) and Stair Step (bottom) options.

Additional Type-Related Enhancements Adobe Illustrator CS includes a number of enhancements that add polish to the type you set while streamlining your work.
Onscreen highlighting of missing fontsIllustrator CS automatically highlights fonts that are used in a

document but are not available on a computer system, so you can identify and fix problems easily. Then use the Find Font command (available in previous versions of Illustrator) to replace the missing fonts with installed ones or identify the missing fonts so you can install them.
Enhanced hyphenation and justification controlsIllustrator CS provides significantly enhanced hyphen-

ation and justification controls. Control how long a word must be before Illustrator hyphenates it, whether Illustrator hyphenates capitalized words, and whether it favors better word and character spacing or fewer hyphens. New justification controls allow you to set minimum, maximum, and desired settings for word spacing, letter spacing, glyph scaling, and more.
Expanded language supportSpell-check and hyphenate the text in your Illustrator documents in 29

languages, from U.S. and U.K. English, French, and German to Icelandic, Polish, Serbian, and Turkish.
Improved text linking and deletionText linking is now more flexible: any text area, including path text,

can be linked to any other text area, so its possible to flow text from one area, onto a path, and then into a second area. Plus, you can now delete a linked text block without also deleting any text it containsthe text now flows back into the previous box. Illustrator also now reduces clutter in your documents by automatically deleting empty text blocks that are created by clicking a type tool and not entering text.
Warning about text reflowOpen documents created in older versions of Illustrator with confidence: you

can choose to have the text in legacy documents remain just as it was designed until you click an insertion point to edit it, or you can choose to update all type objects when you open the file with Illustrator CS.

10

Save Files as Templates Illustrator CS now includes a template file format, which makes it easy to use completed designs as the basis for new projects. Templates are especially handy for projects where specific content changes but the overall design remains largely the same. For example, you can create templates that contain artboard dimensions, swatches, character and paragraph styles, symbols, guides, and other elements that are used in all of a particular clients collateral or advertising. When youre basing new versions of a design on an existing project, using a template prevents the original file from being overwritten by opening a new, untitled document. Customer-Driven Enhancements Input from customers has helped Adobe make many improvements to the features you rely on. Other enhancements are designed to make Illustrator more intuitive, so new users can get up to speed more quickly. Heres an overview of some of the user interface enhancements in this release: Learn about Illustrator and how to make the most of key features: Watch a 90-minute Total Training video by expert author and trainer Deke McClelland that is included on a CD in the box. Learn about new features in Illustrator CS and access tutorials and other free content by choosing options from the Welcome to Adobe Illustrator CS screen that appears when you first launch the program.

Take advantage of richer support for the SVG file format: Illustrator now supports the use of SVG primitives, expanding your options for manipulating objects in the SVG files you import and export. Print and export linked EPS and Adobe PDF files that interact with transparencyincluding duotones without embedding them. Open and save Style, Swatch, Brush, and Symbol libraries right from their respective palettes by choosing the Open Library and Save Library commands from the palette menus. Use a lock button on the Transform palette to scale objects proportionally. Specify a sample size in pixels for the Eyedropper tool. Choose a custom scale size for DXF and DWG files on import. Optimize and export WBMP graphics for use on wireless devices. Automate more tasks with Scripting enhancements, including the ability to automate all new featuressuch as the new Printing interfacewith expanded scripting support.

Work Efficiently
Adobe Illustrator CS is a versatile tool that enables you to take the graphics you produce virtually anywhere. Presenting a consistent visual identity across different mediumsprint, the Web, broadcast, and even cell phone displaysis one of the most effective ways for companies to build recognizable brands. Because each medium has unique production requirements, Illustrator provides a comprehensive set of options that make repurposing a design easy, no matter what medium you need to deliver it for. Tight integration with other Adobe products makes moving rich content from Illustrator into other authoring tools, such as Adobe InDesign or Adobe GoLive easy. Enhanced Adobe PDF support provides better integration with Adobe Acrobat 6.0 as well as , compatibility with the new Adobe PDF 1.5 language specification. A new printing interfacesimilar to the one in InDesignensures fast, reliable results every time you print. Faster performance means Illustrator can keep pace with the flow of your ideas, so you can sustain your creative momentum. New integration with Microsoft Office means your graphics look great whether theyre used in a PowerPoint presentation, a Word report, or an Excel spreadsheet. You can also depend on import and export support for a wide variety of file formats, as well as tight integration with leading Adobe products and Macromedia Flash. Enhanced Adobe PDF Support Adobe Illustrator has used Adobe PDF as its native file format for several versions, making it easy for you, your clients, and others to open and view your artwork files in Adobe Acrobat or the free Adobe Reader. Now Illustrator CS introduces new support for Adobe PDF, including compatibility with Acrobat 6.0 and the Adobe PDF 1.5 format, extensive security options, and support for layers, printers marks, and bleeds in Adobe PDF files. In addition, you can apply transparency flattener styles as you save Adobe PDF files and save Adobe PDF settings as presets to streamline Adobe PDF creation.

Here is a brief look at the new options available when you save your artwork as Adobe PDF files: Compatibility Choose whether to make your Adobe PDF file compatible with Acrobat 4.0, Acrobat 5.0, or the latest version, Acrobat 6.0. Saving files as Acrobat 6.0 (PDF 1.5) files offers optimal flexibility, unless you plan to incorporate the Adobe PDF file into an application that only supports older Adobe PDF versions. Time-saving Adobe PDF presets Save Adobe PDF settings as Adobe PDF presets to streamline production and ensure consistency. Illustrator includes three Adobe PDF Presets: Illustrator PDF for optimal preservation of transparency when exporting Adobe PDF files for use in other applications, Press PDF for automatically flattening transparent elements for high-end print production, and Acrobat 6 Layered PDF for quickly exporting top-level layers in Illustrator files to the Adobe PDF 1.5 file format for further manipulation in Adobe Acrobat 6.0.
Improved consistency with transparency flattener presets Because the Adobe PDF file format cannot

process transparency natively, Illustrator CS provides enhanced controls for flattening transparent artwork as you save Adobe PDF files, so you can make trade-offs between quality and speed of output. You can now save transparency flattener settings as presets to save time and ensure consistency. Illustrator CS includes three transparency flattener presets for low-, medium-, and high-resolution output, and you can easily create your own as well. In addition, you can choose to use the flattener settings you specified for your document in the Document Setup dialog box.

12

Flexible Adobe PDF layer support Save layered Illustrator CS files as layered Acrobat 6.0 (PDF 1.5) files, so others can display optional content, such as alternative designs or multilingual text, when viewing the file in Acrobat 6.0. Compression Use the same compression options available in Adobe Acrobat Distiller, including the new Adobe PDF 1.5 format and the new industry-wide compression standard, JPEG 2000. Printers marks and bleeds Include printers marks and bleeds in Adobe PDF files for proofing and to support Adobe PDF-based print production workflows. Security Specify a range of security options for import and export of Adobe PDF files, such as passwordprotection, encryption method (40-bit or 128-bit), and whether printing, content copying and extraction, and other changes are allowed. Expanded viewing options Choose to automatically view the Adobe PDF file in Acrobat or Adobe Reader after Illustrator saves it. Also, choose whether to optimize Adobe PDF files for faster Web viewing. Summary Check a list of all of the Adobe PDF settings youve specified before saving the final file. Tighter integration with Adobe Photoshop Move layered files between Photoshop and Illustrator more easily. Text editability has been improved because the two programs now share the same underlying text composition technology. Plus, multiple spot channels can be imported and 16-bit color data can be converted to 8-bit on import, so you no longer have to keep two versions of your original file. Also, you can link Photoshop duotone and tritone PDF images and print them accurately from Illustrator. Expanded Print Capabilities One of the top priorities for Adobe Illustrator CS was to refine the printing experience and make Illustrator print jobs more efficient and reliable to output, whether to a desktop printer or a high-end print production device. To achieve this, Illustrator CS introduces a streamlined user interface and next-generation support for fast and reliable printing, so you can easily produce consistent results every time you print. This section describes how the revised print interface improves the printing process, and details how a variety of new or enhanced optionsfrom print presets to printers markscan help you output your artwork more reliably.

Use new Print Styles to save time and ensure consistency at output.

Use the consolidated Print dialog box to select all print-related options.

Preview how selected print options interact with your artwork as you select options on different panels in the Print dialog box. Select tiling options right in the Print dialog box. Use new Scaling options to fit oversized artwork onto a single sheet of paper.

Here is a brief look at the new options available when printing from Illustrator CS:
Streamlined user interface Illustrator CS eliminates the Page Setup and Separations Setup dialog boxes, and

consolidates their functionality in the comprehensive new Print dialog box. You can now specify all print settings in the Print dialog box, from tiling and custom page sizes to printers marks, color management output profiles, and transparency flattener settings. This new, more unified interface makes it easier to specify printing options quickly and accurately to achieve the results you want.
Interactive print preview Illustrator CS now offers visual feedback in the Print dialog box. The new Print

Preview displays a thumbnail view of your artwork, and offers detailed visual information about how your current print settings will interact with your selected media. This thumbnail view is always visible, no matter which panel is selected in the Print dialog box.
Convenient scaling options With Illustrator CS, its easy to print oversized artwork on standard paper sizes.

The new Fit to Page option automatically scales your artwork to the paper size while maintaining the proper aspect ratio. With the Custom Scale option, you can specify the percentage Illustrator scales the artwork, as well as whether the width and height are scaled in proportion to each other or scaled separately.
Intuitive tiling controls Tiling controls in Illustrator CS now appear within the unified Print dialog box,

so its easier and more intuitive to print large designs on multiple pieces of paper. You specify whether Illustrator prints a single full page, tiles full pages, or tiles imageable areas. You also control the placement of the artwork on the tiled pages by clicking a point on the Placement icon or specifying a value for Origin X and Origin Y (which are calculated in relation to the upper-left corner of the artwork). You can also still define page tile settings on the artboard using the page tool.
Time-saving print presets With Illustrator CS, you can save print settings as print presets to save time, elim-

inate mistakes, and automate common printing tasks. For example, you could save print presets for each of your proof printers to quickly set the options you typically use. Print presets youve saved or imported appear on the Printer Presets submenu in the General panel of the new Print dialog box. Choose File > Print Presets to define new presets, or save print presets on the fly in the Print dialog box.
Improved consistency with transparency flattener presets Because most printing devices and the EPS file

format cannot process transparency natively, Illustrator CS provides enhanced controls for flattening transparent artwork as you print or export it, so you can make trade-offs between quality and speed of output.
More flexible printers marks In the past, Illustrator treated printers marks as a unityou either printed

them or you didnt. Now, you can print whatever combination of trim, registration, color bar, and page information marks you want. In addition, you can specify the weight of the trim marks, the offset distance from the artwork, and whether you use Roman or Japanese printers marks.
Independent bleed settings Illustrator CS expands your choices in specifying bleed settings as well: You can

set the bleed area to a uniform distance along all four sides of the artboard, or you can specify different bleed amounts for each edge.
New separation options In addition to support for printing host-based separations, Illustrator CS now

supports in-RIP separations, so you can output jobs more quickly when printing to PostScript RIPs (Adobe PostScript 3 RIPs, some Adobe PostScript Level 2 RIPs, and some LanguageLevel3 RIPs) that support this feature. In-RIP separations print more quickly because only one PostScript filerather then four or more is sent to the RIP. This workflow is also optimized for additional in-RIP processing, such as trapping and imposition. You can also customize printer output without the use of an EPSF Rider file, which makes controlling dot characteristics, screen angles, and screen resolutions for individual inks faster and more direct.

Finer control when printing layers With Illustrator CS, you can print either composite output or separations

(both host-based and in-RIP) of all layers, visible layers, or all visible, printable layers. Plus, you can print only selected objects as either composite output or separations. This enhanced capability makes it easier to proof or print comps of individual parts of complex artwork. (Note: Specify whether layers are visible and printable in the Layers palette.) Faster performance Adobe Illustrator is faster across the board, so you can work more quickly. From copying and pasting to scrolling around the artboard, printing, and saving files, you can pursue your ideas in a more interactive environment. Tighter integration with Microsoft Office When you need to move artwork from Illustrator into a PowerPoint presentation, a Word document, or an Excel spreadsheet, the new Save For Microsoft Office command saves your graphics in a format that gives you greatlooking results every time. Whether youre working on a Windows or Mac OS system, this new option saves you time by ensuring your artwork displays and prints beautifully when viewed in Microsoft Office documents.

Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) Support Metadata is increasingly important in all types of publishing: when metadata is embedded in a file, publishing that file across print, the Web, eBooks, and other media can be automated more easily. Developed by Adobe, the XMP is an open XML framework that standardizes the creation, processing, and interchange of metadata across publishing workflows. Adobe Illustrator CS adds support for XMP. By adding metadata in XMP, for example, keywords you add to your files can be indexed by Internet search engines, making your images more easily accessible online. Because the XMP standard is also supported by other components of the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop CS, Acrobat 6.0 Professional, and Adobe InDesign CS, the metadata information you enter in your Illustrator files can be maintained wherever you take the file. Metadata in XMP format can now be saved in EPS files as well as in AI, Adobe PDF, and SVG files. Using the File Info panels, you and others in your workgroup can enter data pertinent to a project, including information used by newspapers and other publishing companies including support for International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) schema. Illustrator CS also supports the ability to create custom File Info panels to better support your groups specific workflows. A new preference that requires you to enter key data about a file the first time you save a file streamlines the data-entry process and ensures that essential data is included for managed workflows.
