25, 2012 Jane Clowser student taught at Waukee South Middle School in our 6th - 8th grade art classroom. Each classroom consisted of 18-32 students. Waukee is a suburban school district just outside of Des Moines. Most students come from upper-middle class homes. However, student from all socio-economic groups are present at Waukee South Middle School. Jane's duties included an advisory period and six sections of art. Jane was also responsible for integrating special education students into each of the aforementioned classes. Jane took on full-time teaching responsibilities for four weeks of her placement. Jane used the district's curriculum guide to create long range and daily lesson plans that were well planned out and thorough. She wrote clearly defined objectives for each lesson and created original assessments and activities that took into account the various learning styles that are typical for the middle school learner. Jane's experiences outside the classroom allowed her to create lesson plans that were differentiated and student centered. The design of these lessons met the needs of a broad range of students. Her preparedness, content knowledge and flexibility are indeed strengths enabling her to effectively manage a classroom. Jane developed good management skills and techniques. She understands the importance of clearly defining expectations and following through with consequences. She learned the importance of anticipating needs and redirecting students when necessary. Jane's organizational skills are considerable, and her willingness to learn was much appreciated. She introduced many creative ideas and was open to constructive criticism. These qualities enabled her to learn from lesson to lesson and better prepare materials for the classroom. I would consider this to be one of Jane's strengths. Jane's ability to draw on previous experiences allowed her to develop a good rapport with students that was appropriate, positive and constructive. Jane spent a good deal of time before and after school helping students in groups and individual instruction. Students benefitted from Jane's interaction. She truly was concerned for her students. Jane demonstrated a high degree of professionalism. Her appearance and conduct was appropriate. She was easy to work with and demonstrated flexibility and confidence in working with team members. Another of Jane's greatest strengths is content knowledge in the arts. I feel Jane would be a valuable asset to any school. Her love of the arts and concern for students is very admirable. Her work ethic and personal characteristics will complement any teaching staff. I would recommend Jane for any teaching assignment for which she is qualified.
