Global Citizenship for Young Children

Brief Description of the Book

Civics
Margaret Collins

This primary book does a great job teaching young children important concepts like basic needs, environmental issues, fair-ness, exploring cultures, democracy and global issues. One of my favorite things about this book is that is promotes tolerance! It also touches on the subject of citizenship and what it means to be an American.

It's Ancient History!

History
Disney Book Group

This book adds humor to the subject of History. I have always been a fan of Disney, and this book is no exception! The characters go through the events in history while explaining them in a simple way that younger students can understand. My favorite thing about this book is that is makes History appealing and fun for young students, when this subject can be scary and boring to some.

Tyler & His Solve-a-matic Machine

Economics
Jennifer Bouani

This is a wonderful introduction for primary students about capitalism and entrepreneurship. I was so glad to find interesting childrens books on such an important topic, this book has an interesting and engaging storyline that will keep students entertained and excited to learn!

The Seven Continents

Geography
Wil Mara

This is a great primary book about geography because it has wonderful, real life photographs that keep students interested and engaged throughout the entire book! I loved that this book also comes with a CD so that students can read along with the book. The seven continents asks questions to get students thinking on each page. This is important to me because I am a big proponent of making inferences.

Annotated Bibliography: Intermediate Books

Title Social Studies Strand Author
This is a brand new book that really caught my attention. If I used it in my classroom, I would be the one reading it aloud to the class (whole group) and would have to explain some difficult concepts. This book discusses the simple idea of liberty and our basic human rights. I think it is so unique that an everyday Joe wrote this. It was not a politician, political party, or even an author who wrote it. He was just a passionate American trying to send a positive message. This book has such an interesting take on teaching about wars and the terrible things that have happened over time. It explains concepts in a very detailed way, and also provides comic strips for extra comprehension. I chose this book for intermediate grade levels because I felt like the great details would be better understood by older students.

Brief Description of the Book

Liberty Child

Civics
Eric Bigelow

Horrible Histories: Woeful Second World War

History
Terry Deary

Striker Jones: Elementary Economics for Elementary Detectives

Economics
Maggie M. Larche

When I came across this book I was so excited! This is a mystery book that involves a ton of basic economic lessons while doing some detective work. I think kids would go crazy for this book and would not even realize that they are learning about economics in the process. It deals with supply and demand, incentives, and trade offs.

The Everything Kids' Geography Book: From the Grand Canyon to the Great Barrier Reef - explore the world!

Geography
Jane P. Gardener

This is a great book for older elementary students (3-5_ because it explains concepts in depth. It has fun facts on every page, which I really ended up liking. The facts are accurate, and they kept me interested the whole time I was reading. Another thing that I like about this book is that it is available as an e-book to special subscribers on Amazon Prime. I was lucky that I qualified. This would really come in handy if I had a tight budget in my classroom (doesnt everyone these days?)

Target Population Social Studies Strand Name of Website Brief Description of the Website URL
What is not to love about National Geographic for kids? This website is full of engaging pictures and stories that students will love. It is interactive and provides several resources, including geography. It gives a great look at different countries and what they look like. there are a few maps, but they are very simple and basic, which is good for younger students. Most students dont have the opportunity to travel around the world, (Im still waiting for my chance), and this site lets us all follow a young girl around the world on her journeys. She describes her trips in detail and provides plenty of real life pictures. I picked this website because it does such a great job explaining and focusing on money. This site is full of resources and links that help students learn valuable things like learning about banking, the stock market, how the economy affects our everyday world. They also provide a fun and interactive game that guides students through a money treasure hunt! They get to apply what they have learned from the site in this game.

This website (bbc) is great because it has an extensive kids section. There are tabs about ancient history, world history, and British history, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. There is also a section called Hands on History that has other great articles and resources attached to it. Students would benefit from this site because it is user friendly and interesting. This website is jam packed with wonderful resources, games, and information for students about Geography. The first thing that stood out to me about this site was that I would be wheable to extend any Geography lesson easily with all of the resources that are available. This website is very interactive, and student friendly, which is really important to me. This is important because we cant expect our students to understand what to do if the material (or in this case, website) is too confusing to navigate. Another thing that
