Newman College Students Club Inc.

(ASS: A0020932M) Newman College (The University of Melbourne) 887 Swanston St, PARKVILLE, VIC, 3052

23rd April, 2012 Dear members of the College community, On behalf of Newman College and the Newman College Students Club, I would like to invite you to the annual Community Service Dinner. This year, the Dinner will take place on Friday, May the 11th, with drinks beginning at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm dinner. The Dinner strives to unite members of our College community, raising awareness of a socially significant issue, while raising funds to make a small but crucial impact on that situation. In past years, we have raised around $15,000 from the evening, a figure we are striving to exceed this year. Your support is what makes this community so special and will be gratefully received. Proceeds from the Dinner will go towards Caritas, Jesuit Refugee Services and the Jesuit Hakimani Centre (JHC) in Nairobi, Kenya. Established in 2001, the JHC is directed by Dr Elias Mokua, a former Newman resident. The JHC acts as a social centre and research institution which follows the aims of Catholic Social Teaching in working alongside the poor and marginalised to combat issues such as poverty, lack of education, lack of economic opportunities, bad governance, and the continued HIV/AIDS threat. The Dinner will feature an address by Michael Keem and Mitchell Black, two current Newman students who undertook community development work with the JHC in January this year. Michael and Mitchell travelled extensively to co-host interactive forums and workshops aimed at empowering individuals to formulate creative solutions to their local and national problems. They also helped co-ordinate a national conference, attended by the Vice President and Prime Minister, on the concerns of Kenyans over their upcoming general elections. Other highlights of the Dinner include auctions, musical performances and entertainment from students. Each year, the Community Service Dinner receives strong support from the parents, students and friends of the College. As in previous years, members of the Newman community are invited to attend the Dinner either individually, or with a table of your family. Tables of eight or ten people are available. Please indicate your preferences on the attached booking form, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. We ask that you RSVP by Thursday, May 3. Any RSVP that has not reached Newman College by Monday, May 7, cannot be accepted. Cheque, cash or electronic transfer of funds are all accepted forms of payment (see attached booking / donation form). There are a limited number of tickets available and bookings will be taken on the basis of first come, first served. We thank you in advance for your support of Community Service at Newman, and hope to see you at what will be a most enjoyable evening. With kind regards, Yours sincerely,

Paul King Head of Community Service
