pigsarTM, High-Pressure Test Facility for Gas Flow Meters

National Standard of the Federal Republic of Germany for High-Pressure Natural Gas Harmonized reference value for the volume flow rate of high-pressure gas as used by PTB (Germany), NMi (Netherlands) and LNE (France) DKD-accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 for volume flow

Calibration Procedure - differential pressure devices (orifice, Venturi tube, Venturi nozzle or ISA nozzle meter runs)
Calibration of differential pressure devices at the high pressure calibration facility pigsarTM in Dorsten, Germany. Test conditions: Test medium: Test pressures (gage): Test temperature: Volume flow: p at orifice: Test period: Measurement cycle: Length of test runs: Nominal diameter: Flange size: working standards (9): Gas compositions: natural gas 16 50 bar (55 bar can be possible at appropriate upstream conditions) about +12 +20 C 8 6,500 m/h (maximum flow depends on test pressure and gas transportation
conditions in pipeline system)

20mbar 2500 mbar (lower p possible but with higher uncertainties) 60 s (standard); possible range: 20 - 180 s about 0.8 s (averaged over test period) up to 15.5 m (upon special request longer lengths possible) DN 50 to DN 400 (2 16) standard ANSI 600#RF (other sizes including PN 16, 25, 40, 64
and ANSI 150, 300, 900, 1500 available upon request)

four G 1000, four G 250 turbine meters and one G 250 IRPP detection by process gas chromatography close to the working standards, update cylce 3 min 0.19 % 0.28% (mass flow)

Best values for uncertainty: 0.13 % ... 0.22 % (volume flow)

Calibration / test program and date of calibration have to be agreed. Standard test program would comprise 5 flow rates with 3 repeats.

General issues All significant data of the differential pressure device have to be delivered by customer before date of calibration. pigsarTM does not provide dimensional measurements of the differential pressure device like roughness tests, edge sharpness, diameter measurements, excentricity, etc. pigsarTM is not responsible for the fulfillment of the corresponding limits given in ISO 5167. Minimum and maximum flow rate / Reynolds number ReD have to be defined by customer. Pressure-, differential-pressure- and temperature-transmitters of the facility will be used. A thermowell will be installed downstream of the orifice plate, Venturi tube or nozzle, ISA nozzle.

The calibration will be performed in one flow direction (uni-directional). Result of the calibration will be an individual calibration curve consisting of the discharge coefficient C relative to the flow rate or/and Reynolds number, including statements regarding the uncertainty of the calibration. The uncertainty for C is usually in the order of 0.2% to 0.25%, depending on the differential pressure. For differential pressures below 20 mbar higher uncertainties are probable. Besides the special procedures given in this document, the calibrations will be conducted according to the German rules for the calibration of high pressure gas meters, written in PTB-Prfregeln Band 30, Messgerte fr Gas, Hochdruckprfung von Gaszhlern, Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunschweig und Berlin, 2003, ISSN 0341-7964, unless the customer wishes a different procedure. Sequent steps 0. Specification of the calibration by the customer during enquiry and order. 1. Delivery of meter and accessories to be tested (to be arranged by customer) 2. Upon arrival: Perform as-received inspection of the meter for external damage, intactness and completeness; place meter in intermediate storage. 3. Transfer meter to metering building for temperature assimilation purposes. 4. Perform visual check of meter for internal damage, fouling, etc. (Note: The inner surface of the meters will usually not be cleaned). Document the results. Install meter and spool pieces in meter run along with a flow conditioner of pigsarTM (CPA-type) in the inlet. 5. Connect the pigsar T, p- and p transmitters. 6. In case customer witnesses calibration: crosscheck of the installation and calibration conditions together with the customer. 7. Pressurize and leakage test the complete test run. 8. Check of correct reading of all signals 9. Start calibration at maximum load, allow temperature to stabilize at maximum volume flow. 10. Set the volume flow rate (usually within +/- 5 %), 11. Wait for pressure, temperature and volume flow to stabilize. 12. Start measurement once stable process conditions have been reached: - Take measurements at test periods of 60 seconds (standard). - Check that test conditions during the test run are stable. - Measure p, p, T, of orifice meter and working standards (part of automatic measurement process) - Measure gas composition - Convert flow rate of the working standards to determine reference value. 13. Take 3 measurements (standard) for each volume flow rate. 14. Continue tests at flow rates given above, repeat steps 10-14 for each flow rate. 15. Determine discharge coefficient C for each flow point according to ISO 5167. A mean value for each flow point will be calculated. This task can only be performed after finalizing all data collection and may take 1-2 days after the calibration. 16. Remove meter and spool pieces. 17. Seal meter, if necessary and possible 18. Mark flow conditioner and spools, if necessary and possible 19. Issue calibration certificate after C(ReD)-calculation, detailing test conditions, test parameters and calibration curve including uncertainty. 20. Box up the meter and supplies, using the packaging, boxes, etc. the items arrived in. 21. Place meter in intermediate storage for collection by customer. 22. Collection to be arranged by the customer.
