STAFF Fr. Roger Lumbre Pastor Janel Scales/Marcel Normand Bookkeeper/Bulletin Editor Judy Smerchek Secretary Rectory Office Hours Wednesdays 9AM-Noon Tel. (620) 347-4525

I miss to inform you at least in the bulletin last weekend that April 18, last Wednesday I celebrated my 26th year anniversary as a priest. I apologize for that. Forgetfulness is no alibi for failure. Although there is always that tendency in me not to mention it honestly, I dont want attention but it is also a reality that my priesthood is not my personal possession. It is yours and mine. It is OURS it belongs to the Church! It is a gift from God! So last Wednesday I mentioned it to the congregation in Girard at the beginning of mass and invited them to pray with me and thank God for this gift. I would ask the same from all of you who were not in Church last Wednesday. Let us praise and thank the Lord for the gift of the priesthood not just for me but for all our priests, including our own bishop (bishops are priests too!). Every now and then I get postcards from Eucharistic adorers from other parishes throughout the diocese and from nuns in Wichita, telling me that they are praying during their adoration hour for me as a priest and the priesthood. It is very inspiring and encouraging. I ask all of you too to also pray for me, for the gift of the priesthood and for all the priests, in our diocese and throughout the world. I would also take this opportunity to remind everyone that it is every Catholics duty to nurture vocations to the priesthood and religious life starting in our family. I am wondering how many of our families are talking about religious and priestly vocations at home with their children? Sadly, I heard a few parents saying they defer to discuss it nowadays at home because of the following reasons: they want their children to be someone else in profession, they leave it to their children to decide, the clergy scandal in the church, etc.... I am not saying we should dictate much less force it upon our children. But surely in all aspects of reasons, by virtue of our faith, it is imperative that we would present it to them as a calling into which your children might have been chosen by God to serve. Most of all, added to openly discussing and nurturing vocations, there is no substitute to constantly and fervently praying for vocations. This is one aspect of our faith that I want to see every family in our parish do: that they will develop their personal prayer life and that they will pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Two Early Saints this Week This week, the Church honors two of her early saints who became martyrs. This Monday, we recognize St. George who was martyred in 303. Many of us will recall the story of Georges slaying the dragon and rescuing the kings daughter. While the Church adheres to his memory, not so the legends that surround his life. He was a Roman soldier who rose to high rank in the army. Emperor Diocletian honored his great bravery, but when George became a Christian, he resigned from the Army. When he criticized the Emperor for being so cruel to the Christians, he was put in prison and tortured. When he refused to recant, he was beheaded April 23, 303. He is the Patron Saint of England, and also of the Boy Scouts. On Wednesday, we honor St. Mark, the Evangelist, a 1st century saint. He was not one of the 12 apostles, but he was one of the four Gospel writers. Mark was converted by St. Peter and accompanied him to Rome, acting as his secretary. The Roman people begged Mark to put in writing the accounts of Peters frequent talks on Our Lords Life. He did this under Peters direction before the year 60. He wrote the second Gospel in Greek for the Gentile converts to Christianity. Mark went to Egypt to found the Church in Alexandria, then returned to Rome to be with Peter and Paul. Mark was seized by heathens and dragged over stones, then thrown into prison where he died April 25, 74. The city of Venice has his remains entombed there. Why Did He Come? Why did God become man? Why did our glorious creator step down into a stable more than 2,000 years ago to become man? Some say it was to tell us about love, while others believe that Jesus came to teach us. He did both while He was here, but according to St. Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury in England nearly a thousand years ago, God became man to save us from our sins. Actually, this weekend, we honor St. Anselm on his feastday April 21, the year he died of old age in 1109. He was named a Doctor of the Church and considered the greatest theologian of his day. He describes why God became man in his day. He describes why God became man in his classic book, CUR DEUS HOMO, Latin for why God Man. He said it was because mans sin is infinite -- even the least sin against an infinitely holy being demands an infinite penalty. But how can finite man ever pay an infinite penalty? What was needed was an infinite man--Jesus Christ, the God-man. And so Christ came into the world and went to that cruel hill called Golgotha and suffered an infinite penalty so that the forgiveness of God could be offered to all who would believe and ask Jesus to come into their hearts.
