In the beginning of any project there is great enthusiasm, followed by doubt, then panic, searching for the guilty party, and finally punishment of the innocent, and rewarding the uninvolved. - Helmut Schmidt, German Chancellor

Complexity, as any scientist will tell you, is a slippery idea. Things that seem complicated can be preposterously simple; things that seem simple can be dizzyingly complex. Were suckers for scale. Jeffrey Kluger Simplexity, Why Simple Things Become Complex

Leaders strive for simplicity in general. They know how to simplify things so that others can understand them, evaluate them, and act on them, so that what they say becomes common sense. Larry Bossidy & Ram Charan Execution, The Discipline of Getting Things Done

Often the most effective way to describe, explore, and summarize a set of numbers even a very large set is to look at pictures of those numbers. Furthermore, of all methods for analyzing and communicating statistical information, welldesigned data graphics are usually the simplest and at the same time the most powerful.

Andy asked 860 project managers How effective are you at communication?
Alphas get to know their audiences and communicate appropriately. Until the product is in the customers hands, communication is my deliverable. Victor (Alpha)
Of all the attributes that separate the Alpha group from their peers, communication presents the most striking difference. Among practically everyone who touches a project, there is a general awareness that communication could be better; a staggering 91% of project managers ranked their effective communication higher than their collective stakeholders did. Few topics evoked the emotional responses that communication did . . . this was their single greatest need.
The approach in the One Page Project Manager provides a proven process for project management that significantly improves the chances that the project will be completed on time, on budget and on target.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiation and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which, kills countless ideas and plans: That the moment one commits oneself, providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in ones favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance that no man could have dreamed would come his way.

The spreadsheet can represent an excellent lowest common denominator to create your project plan. Communicating what is going on . . . The answer is to visualize the project plan. A visual view of your project increases the ability of others to understand deadlines, dependencies, and its progress to date. There is no such thing as too much communication on a project. Yes, its time consuming and might not appear to produce immediate results, but trust me this is the big one.
