A unique opportunity for a Spanish Major Student Summer 2012

Magellan Study Abroad is currently offering two travel opportunities for students studying Spanish and willing to chaperone small groups of motivated teens in Spain with the help of a Program Director. Opportunities to take Spanish classes is offered during the 3 week stay in Salamanca. This is a non-paid position. Here are the requirements for the positions: -Be available all month of July 2012 -Be fluent in Spanish - Be 23 and older -Prior position leading group of teens preferred -Be ready to abide by the established rules (see next section)

DEFINITION OF A CHAPERONE: We have developed the following general guidelines to help you perform your duties as a chaperone. If you have any questions regarding these guidelines please contact your assigned Program Director. Chaperones follow a strict code of conduct and in presence of students

May not use, sell, provide, possess, or be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. May not use tobacco in the presence of, or within the sight of, students. May not administer any medications, prescription or nonprescription, to students.

Students should at all times follow the code of conduct agreed to by themselves and their parents. Along with the Program Director, as a chaperone, you will supervise a group of students, helping them learn while making sure they behave appropriately. Review the use of the buddy system with students. Account for all participants regularly and before changing activities. A chaperone must be readily available, be mindful of safety concerns, and respond to student needs.

Chaperones will be informed on first day of the program of important medical information (including allergies) and other relevant information (such as diet). During the summer programs, there are two very distinct experiences/locations which will impact the way in which the staff stays in touch with the students. HOMESTAY PORTION OF THE PROGRAM: This experience is probably the most valuable and enriching part of the program. It involves a homestay in a family selected by our partner school. Staff should check on the status of the students as early as the day following arrival and continue checking in with students to assess their homestay family experience. Days are always organized in the same manner, with an emphasis on a discreet control of the student, which starts by a participant count in the morning 15 minutes prior to classes, during the break, and after classes. (This task is traditionally shared with the Program Director) After lunch and afternoon recess, activities will resume with the late afternoon workshops or activities. After dinner students enjoy some free time with a strict curfew time. Chaperones will randomly check with the families by phone to make sure curfew is properly enforced. On specially designated occasions, activities will be organized after dinner for the group. On weekends, day excursions will be organized (often) with the help and supervision of the partner school. Because there is no defined day off for chaperones, there are invited to share with the Program Director a schedule where they can enjoy rest periods that do not affect the dynamic of the group. They should always be reachable by cell phone at anytime, day or night.

TRAVELING PORTION OF THE PROGRAM: Because students are done with school at this point of the program, the staff will be required to provide more supervision and organization than at the start of the trip. They could lead activities that can involve: city tours, museum tours and scavenger hunts. Staff should always discuss what activity they would prefer to lead as it will be more enjoyable for the students to participate in an activity where the staff is 100% involved and motivated. Curfew times are now made in hotels or student residences and involve the enforcement of strict rules regarding safety, but also behavior. Chaperones should make sure that, at the start of the day, each participant has with them: Insurance Information (ID card) Staff Emergency numbers Information on hotel/student residence

Any breach of the contract and inappropriate behavior must be shared with the Program Director and addressed appropriately. Curfew times (and amount of free time awarded to students) depend on the groups comprehension and compliance with the rules of the program. The staff should assess on a weekly what curfew times are the most appropriate and how much free time should be granted (especially when travelling) A great team starts when all details and aspects of the Program are shared and reflects positively on the spirit of the trip. A staff that works well together and gets along is twice as strong and affects positively the students. If you have any issue you want to share with the program director do it as early as possible.
