Joseph Falesa selected in South Pacific AFL Squad AFL Samoa welcomed back Joseph Falesa yesterday a product of Lepa and Lotofaga College who just returned from the intensive Australian Football Rules (AFL) South Pacific training and selection camp held in Auckland, New Zealand. The camp was held across four days last week attracting the best under 16 boys from the Pacific region, all vying for their selection in the 2012 South Pacific Squad to play in Western Sydney, Australia at the National U16s Championships from 4-14 July 2012. The four day camp tested the athletes fitness, skills and game play as well as leadership sessions, testing at Massey University and an individual squad review and video footage of the camp. Andrew Cadzow AFLs Oceanias Development Manager said The camp was of the highest standard, best I have seen. The quality was very good and Joseph performed and behaved admirably. Andrew also believes that the inclusion of Samoa at the Oceania Cup on an annual basis will ensure more students like Joseph will get the opportunity to be seen overseas and to showcase their skills against the best within the Pacific.

AFL Samoa with the assistance of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (MESC), funded Josephs trip to New Zealand giving him the opportunity to travel and play AFL overseas. AFL Samoa had previously suggested with Joseph turning 17 later this year that it might be a hindrance to him making the Oceania squad for the July tour of Australia. The pre camp thoughts were more focussed towards readiness for the 2013 under 18s carnival and as an encouragement for other aspiring Samoan footballers to not just play the game but the possibility of gaining international experience. As it has transpired, Joseph has been named in a four man emergency list of the preliminary partial squad announced.

Mr Gabel Stathis, development officer for AFL in Samoa, was thrilled while waiting on the arrival of his rising star at the Faleolo International Airport yesterday saying, Joseph has performed well above expectations at the camp. To be named on the emergency list of the squad is a bonus and a minor victory in itself for AFL Samoa. Being the only Samoan that attended the camp Joseph is an example of where this game can take other motivated footballers. Joseph now has the option to travel to Australia for the under 16 National Championships where he can further develop his game. Upon arrival at Falelolo International airport Joseph commented on the camp saying I was very pleased to get the opportunity to be selected for this AFL programme, he said I was able to share the Samoan culture to some of the students in the programme since I was the only Samoan there. I would like to thank AFL Samoa and the MESC for funding my trip and its memories I will cherish forever, he added. AFL Samoa would like to acknowledge and thank MESC for the support they Back Home: Joseph Falesa arrives at Faleolo have shown towards the development of International airport coming back from the AFL in Samoa. Without their assistance AFLS South Pacific Training and Selection Camp. Joseph's travel to New Zealand would have not been possible.
