IMPROVEMENTS TO BUCHANAN * Hit the gym. Try to schedule regular ROAD STARTED
By Kyle Leppek Pioneer Staff Writer workouts around your blocks of exam studying time to help keep stress in check. If you are on a sports team, you may still have practices during exam time, but if not, make plans with teammates to do some conditioning. Go for a run, shoot hoops or lift some weights.
MORTON TWP. Preliminary work has started on a more than $1 million project to improve Buchanan Road. Morton Township and Austin Township entered into a contract with the Mecosta County Road Commission earlier this month to completely overhaul almost the entirety of the road that runs through Canadian Lakes. The project is estimated to nish later this year. The road will be improved from 105th Avenue in Morton Township to 150th Avenue in Austin Township. A section of 155th Avenue between Buchanan Road and Pierce Road and a small section of 100th Avenue north of Buchanan Road also will be improved. The total cost of the project will be paid for by the townships, county and with a federal grant. Morton Township is will pay $178,000, Austin Township will pay $278,829, the road commission will pay $275,000 and an additional $360,000 in the form of a safety grant was awarded to the project by the Federal Highway Administration. Culvert and tree trimming work has started on Buchanan Road and 155th Avenue and is expected to be completed by May 14. During that time, temporary closures, mostly west of Timberlane Drive, can be expected. Buchanan Road will be closed at 130th Avenue from May 2 to 11 while the hill is reshaped. However, Timberlane Drive should not be affected. From May 21 to 25, the road will be repaved, including 100th Avenue north of Buchanan. Shoulder work will continue until June 7. Between Sept. 3 and roughly Nov. 1, Buchanan Road will be shut down between Alpine Road and Timberlane Drive to work on the safety grant portion of the project. Buchanan Road will be accessable from East Royal Road, Manitoba Lane and Winnipeg Lane. An additional temporary entrance off of Buchanan Road, east of Alpine Road also is being explored. Morton Township supervisor Jim Quinlan said he will be available to address questions or concerns about the project by e-mail at supervisor@ mortontownship.org.
If youre on your own for exercise and the weather outside is frightful, try an indoor dance or yoga class, or an exercise video or DVD that you can do in your room. * Have a snack. Its hard to concentrate if your stomach is growling, but hold off on the celebratory drinks until after exams are over. Instead, have some energy-boosting snacks on hand while studying, such as trail mix or energy bars. Stay hydrated, too. * Get some air. Does your exam stress mean hours in the library or lab? Go out and walk around the building, or around the block. Clearing your head and getting your eyes away from the screen can work wonders. * Avoid all-nighters. Sometimes an all-night study session is inevitable, but dont underestimate the value of sleep in keeping exam stress under control. If you have multiple exams in the same week, several days with little sleep will leave you even more stressed. Dont overdo the caffeine, and try to plan your sleep as you plan your exam study schedule. If you are a night person who studies more effectively from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., make that work for you, but factor in a mid-morning nap the next day.

College visits should start percolating in the parental and student lobes toward the end of junior year and the start of senior year. Road trips may be necessary, and several at that. The most comprehensive virtual tours, G-chats and online scouring simply cannot replace the experience of seeing real dorm rooms or eating in actual dining halls. As any tooth-and-nails journalist will tell you about a hot story, parents should have a strategy for visiting college campuses and getting the most out of each tour. Prepare to be schooled by Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice president of education outreach for tutoring authority Sylvan Learning. * Cast a wide net. If your high-schooler hasnt done so already, help them compile a list of potential universities. Ask what aspects of college life -- sports, extracurriculars, campus/enrollment size, dorm life, religious afliations, academic strengths and offerings -- are important to them and use those criteria. Mark choices as dream, target and safety schools based on your childs academic performance and test scores. The initial list can be pared down to a realistic number of colleges to visit. * Get SAT/ACT prep support. If some of the dream schools seem out of range due to unsatisfactory test scores, get your student SAT help from the local Sylvan Learning (www.sylvanlearning. com) tutoring experts. The level of competition to get into top schools is more intense than ever. The number of early admission applications has increased dramatically, with some universities seeing doubledigit jumps. To begin the college process, most students applying to competitive colleges now take the SAT/ACT more than once, says Bavaria. * Go while college is in session. Weekends and holidays can be dead zones for college life, which wont give your student a real glimpse of the campus. Call ahead to schedule tours, and make sure college is in session and students are attending classes so potential applicants see the whole experience. * Ask smart questions. Encourage your kid to question everyone -- students, professors, advisors, librarians, coaches and more. Ask the same questions of different students and professors to compare answers. Parents, remember to hit key topics that students might forget, like nancial aid and safety. You can usually trust them to inquire about food selection and social activities.

3 EASY THINGS PARENTS MUST DO TODAY TO PROTECT THEIR KIDS (NewsUSA) - The explosions of technology, mobile and social media use among tweens and teens have left many parents increasingly in the dark about what their children see, say and do every day, and without a clue as to what to do about it.

A GUYS GUIDE TO SELECTING WEDDING BANDS
jewelry collection -- just a watch, huh? -- is about to increase by as much as 50 percent. Meaning, its time to start thinking about what kind of wedding band you want for yourself. Wedding bands have become the norm for men in recent years -- 97 percent of grooms in The Knot Market Intelligences 2011 Engagement & Jewelry Study opted for one -- so even if you have any doubts, your bride will probably set you straight. That means your only real decision is what kind of band best suits you. To hear CNNMoney.com tell it, there are basically two camps: those who dont want to compromise when it comes to quality (platinum bands), and those who feel they cannot afford the best and therefore need to settle (bands made from alternative metals). But, as jewelry expert Michael OConnor points out, that doesnt really give the whole picture. Its true that platinum is so rare -- 30 times more so than gold -- that if all the worlds supply were melted and poured into an Olympic-size pool, it would barely reach your ankles, OConnor says. But mens platinum bands start at $500. That turns out to be pretty comparable to the cost of the two most popular
alternative metals: titanium and tungsten carbide. Both are perhaps best known for being used to make ghter jets. Cool, right? Well, yes, but that also means theyre intrinsically lightweight and lack the heft of platinum. Most men prefer something that feels masculine on their nger, says OConnor. There are other facts to consider, too. Tungsten and titanium jewelry will need special reconditioning if scratched, and cannot be resized. Even the more popular white gold will require rhodium replating to restore its white color due to wear over time. And while platinum -- as all precious metals -- can scratch, the metal is simply displaced on the surface of the ring, meaning very little metal is lost in wear. That makes it the most durable family heirloom that will last generations. Still confused? Then ask yourself this question: How committed are you to your future wife? If the answers what we think, then know that platinum has traditionally symbolized a relationship that will endure since it doesnt fade or change color. Thats the kicker for a lot of couples, says OConnor. For more information, visit www. preciousplatinum.com/weddingbands.
The truth is, most children have a hard enough time navigating the potential threats and pitfalls that come with being a tween or teen in the physical world, and the digital component only compounds the situation. Many parents today have NO IDEA what kind of information their teens are accessing and sharing on a daily basis, while most kids have NO IDEA of the potentially farreaching consequences of their online behaviors and activities. So the question is: How can parents help teens and tweens navigate their physical and digital worlds in a way that will keep them safe and on the right track? 1. Start a dialogue with your teen/ tween. Talk about sexting, cyberbullying, hazing and other threatening acts. Make your teen feel comfortable coming to you or other trusted adults if inappropriate content is shared with them. 2. Remember that you own the
