HARRYS HAMSTER

One day Harry is walking home from school with his friend, Ali.
They stop to look in the window of the pet shop.
Look, Ali! says Harry. Hamsters! Only 75 cents each!
A small golden hamster sits up and looks at Harry through the shop window. It
twitches its whiskers and wiggles its nose. It is the nicest hamster Harry has ever
seen.
Im going to buy that hamster, he says. On Saturday, when I get my pocket
money.
Ali laughs. Youve got a goldfish and a tortoise and a dog already, he says.
Your mum will go mad.
Harry shakes his head. No, she wont, he says. My mum likes hamsters.
On Saturday Harrys dad gives Harry his pocket money. Thanks dad, says
Harry. Im going to buy a hamster.
Good grief! says his dad. Youve got a goldfish and a tortoise and a big, daft
dog already. Whats your mum going to say?
Its all right, dad, smiles Harry. Mum likes hamsters.
Harry and Ali and Dusty the dog run down the street to the pet shop. Harry
looks in the window. The tiny hamster is still there. It wiggles its nose at Harry.
Come on, says Harry, and in they go.
