Reflection 5 Monday February 13, 2012 Friday February 17, 2012 Mahomet-Seymour High School Mrs.

s. Negangard Monday we reviewed, for some, and taught, for others, the strategies for offense and defense. I talked about offense and how there should be constant movement and no standing. I demonstrated how to effectively set screens and do cuts to the basket. For defense my main point was for them to communicate with their teammates and playing help side. Afterwards I had them play 3 on 3. Tuesday was a very similar day. I choose their teams for them on Monday and Tuesday to see if those teams would work for Thursday when the tournament started. For some classes I had to make arrangements and switch up teams, others they seemed to work really well. I noticed that some students really couldnt play on a team with other students so I needed to make adjustments. In particular for 5th hour, they work better and participate more playing 5 on 5. Therefore, their tournament will consist of 4 teams of 5-6 students. In addition, 4th and 5th hour will have competitive and non-competitive leagues. For the tournament I decided that for the first 3 days Id choose the teams for all the classes. They will go through 6-7 rounds. The last 3 days, if they cooperate, they will choose their teams. Wednesday was an early out day and the kids didnt dress, but I got to talk to several students and build those relationships. It was neat. We had a department meeting after school. We mainly talked about what new activities will be implemented into the curriculum next year. Thursday we started the tournament. Everything went smoothly until 4th hour. The students didnt whine or complain about the teams that I made for them (it was good that I tested it out with Monday and Tuesday). In 4th hour the non-competitive league got out of hand a bit. There are girls saying things to other girls and then some girls whining about other girls being too competitive and aggressive, girls coming into our office complaining. So for tomorrow we need to just be more attentive while they play to keep this drama to a minimum. In 5th hour some of the girls on the non-competitive league wanted to be on the teams with the boys so I switched them over to there. Also, when I did my set induction with them I treated them like 3rd graders. Thats how they listen best though because they are a rowdy and wild class. Friday went by as usual, little dilemma, just the usual high school things to deal. Overall, this week was good. I learned a lot and Mrs. Negangard backed off a little more to help manage things on my own. It was a good learning experience week.
