were just two miles from a metro stop, said Ann
Levin, a sociology professor at Curry who drives
to work each day. But your only option to access
the wonders of that city was to stand on a highly
traIfcked road, where cars travel at 50 miles per
hour, with no lights, and no seats, in all weather,
and wait for a bus that may not come.
Allison Coutts, director of the Student Center
and Student Services, who also manages the
on- and off-campus shuttles, said the current
schedule is catered to frst-year resident students
to access local shopping. Freshmen, who arent
allowed to own a car on campus, make up 21
percent of total enrollment at the college, while
80 percent of students who attend Curry live on
campus, Coutts said.
Mary Hogan, a sophomore who lives on
campus, uses the off-campus shuttle to go
shopping at any one of the three malls the shuttle
services all the time. She said that she has not
yet ventured into Boston, but would love to get to
know the city better.
That is exactly the concern of David Potash,
chieI academic oIfcer at Curry. 'How do we help
students take advantage of the larger area? How
do we help students take advantage of Boston?
he said, noting that the lack of transportation
to and from campus has been a recent topic of
interdepartmental chatter among faculty.
According to Kiley, its also an issue
of helping students to access real-world
professional experience opportunities that will
help them later land their frst job. 'I have heard
from students who live on campus who also
participate in clinicals in the city [of Boston],
that they need to get there as early as 6 a.m.,
she said, adding that students who participate
in internships in Boston face similar problems.
What we are looking at now is how we can
increase [off-campus] transportation so that, on
a regular basis, faculty and students can use the
city more conveniently.

Curry College put forth a big helping hand to the
Milton community last month by taking over the
operations and management of a local public ice rink,
but the new endeavor comes with a chilling cost.
On Sept. 13, Curry and the Milton Board of Selectmen
agreed to a three-year term in which Curry will manage
the Max Ulin Ice Skating Rink in Milton, the home ice
of the Colonels mens hockey team. The agreement
requires Curry to spend at least $145,000 in the frst
year of the deal on capital improvements, repairs,
replacements and renovations to the rinkspecifcally,
energy eIfciency systemsand $20,000 in both years
two and three. The state Department of Conservation
and Recreation (DCR) remains responsible for any
necessary repairs to the facilitys roof, ice slab and
cooling systems.
The state, which had previously been operating the
rink, gave the town a fve-year permit earlier this year to
run the rink. Not wanting to take on the fnancial burdens,
the town of Milton looked for a third party to manage and
operate the rink and chose Curry over a local nonproft
group, in part, because oI the college`s fscal strength.
Curry College is a large organization that is currently
operating well. They have assets to protect the town from
defcits, said Town Selectman Chair Marion McEttrick,
in an Aug. 24 Milton Patch.com article.
According to a letter sent to town oIfcials and local
residents last spring, State Sen. Brian A. Joyce, who
represents Milton, said the DCR was running the rink
Curry Takes Over Local Ice Rink
College commits up to
$550,000 to operate and
manage state-owned facility
at an annual operating loss of approximately $334,000.
However, the rink management contract provides
Curry with ample fnancial protections. The contract
caps Curry`s potential cash fow losses at $550,000,
with any additional losses to be repaid by the town of
Milton. In addition, if another contractor signs on to
run the rink at the end of Currys three-year deal, that
contractor will have to pay Curry for all negative cash
fow incurred, which includes the required $185,000 in
capital investments and repairs.
While Curry will potentially absorb some interim
losses in the short term managing the Ulin Rink, over
time it is a fnancially neutral endeavor on behalI oI the
College, said Curry Director of Communication Fran
Jackson. However, according to the contract, if Curry
manages to make any profts operating the ice rink, that
money wont go to the school. Any surpluses will be for
the beneft oI the town oI Milton, Jackson said, adding
Through the Curry bookstores new option, one can rent it for a
cool $67.
Though the program offers huge savings, students are not without
complaints. None of my textbooks were available to rent, claimed
William Drake, a senior IT major. Its great that the option is there,
but if students cant take advantage of it, whats the point?
Others, such as senior Ross Rubin, a psychology major, say the
Rent-a-Book program has already saved him a good amount of
money. I wish this service had come out years ago, he said. It
would have been nice during my underclassman years.
The Rent-a-Book program is run through the Follett Corp.,
which operates approximately 800 college bookstores nationwide,
including Currys. According to the companys Web site, Follett
generates more than $2.7 billion in sales every year by supplying
millions of students with textbooks and educational software. Follett
dictates which titles are for rent, so the individual bookstores have
limited control over which books are available.
To rent a book, students can purchase directly from the bookstore
or sign up with rent-a-text.com, part of Folletts higher education
group. Once students have an account with Follett, they can order
their rental through the Web site, provided their schools bookstore
has the title in house. Once a book has been paid for, students can
simply pick it up at their colleges bookstore.
Rental books must be returned by a set date, with fees to follow
for tardiness. If a student opts to keep a rental book, the rental price
will be refunded and the student will be charged the bookstores full
retail price.
Only a certain number of copies of any given book will be
available for rent, so students shouldnt wait to pick up their class
materials if they plan on renting.
As of late September, 31 percent of the Curry bookstores stock
was available through the rental program. That number will increase
in future semesters, according to Landry. We plan on working with
faculty to raise the number of books available to students, he said.
We will have more titles available for rent going forward.
Now that the word is out, he added, the service will only grow
in popularity.

The average students day at Curry College
usually consists of waking up, going to class, doing
homework and partying with friends. But there are
always exceptions.
Victor Martinez and Samantha Hardy carry a lot
more responsibility on their backs than the normal
Curry student. Pounds and pounds, in fact. Not only
are both student-athletes, but they are also members
of the United States Army National Guard and
ROTC, respectively.
Martinez, a sophomore starting wide receiver on
the Iootball team, is the frst person in his Iamily to
join the military. He enlisted in the Army National
Guard during his senior year of high school, and
has since spent one weekend per month and a two-
week period each a year training with his unit.
Martinez was recently notifed that he would
be leaving Curry and deployed to Afghanistan
in March. Martinez says he plans to return to the
college for the fall 2012 semester, but that his goal
from the day he enlisted as a student at Southbridge
(Mass.) High School in 2008 was to go to war and
experience what serving his country is all about.
Its to see life in a different perspective,
says Martinez, who had one touchdown and 171
receiving yards for the Colonels football team this
season, as of Oct. 18.
Although Hardy wont be seeing a war zone
any time soon, the sophomore goalkeeper for the
womens soccer team says she plans on continuing
her military training after her four years at Curry.
Hardy, a psychology major who was named
TCCC Defender of the Weekshe secured
consecutive shutouts against rivals Colby-Sawyer
and Wentworth in late Septembersigned up for eight
years of service in all, four as an undergrad and then
four more in graduate school. Because there are so few
Curry students in the Army ROTC programseven, to
be exacther reserve oIfcers` training corps courses are
held through Boston University.
Daniella Ferrara Toomey, now in her 12
th
season as
head coach of the womens soccer team, says Hardy is
the frst oI her players to serve in ROTC. She 'holds a
lot of responsibility on her shoulders and thats how she
works, says Ferrara Toomey.
Hardy says most of what little downtime she has is
spent doing homework while most of her friends are
socializing. Because the Army checks on her grades,
maintaining a 3.0 grade point average is crucial so that
she does not have to attend study hall, an Army ROTC
requirement, she says.
For both student-athletes, the military has helped them
both on and oII their respective felds. Martinez says playing
on the football team has helped him stay focused and in
good physical shape for the military. He also routinely shares
his knowledge about military training experiences with his
teammates and friends. When you join the military, you go
through training and it instills values in you, he says.
In both cases, it seems the right values were already
in place.
Says Hardy, I dont want to be an average person. I
want to be above average.
Two student-athletes
balance life on campus
with military service
that the college is being a good corporate
citizen in taking on this role.
Other regular users of the rink, in
addition to the Curry mens hockey
team, include the Milton youth hockey
program and Milton High School. Town
Administrator Kevin Mearn said both
groups were happy to hear that Curry
would be managing the rink. I met with
the Milton hockey board of directors,
weve reached out to all the other users
of the town, and everybody was really
pleased, Mearn said.
As well as managing and operating
the rink, Curry will use the facility to
the beneft oI all Curry students. 'For
the academic community, we believe
this will provide new opportunities for
students, from internships to competitive
play for our student athletes, to intramural
activities, to community service
opportunities, said Jackson.
Currys ice hockey season starts Nov.
6 at the Ulin Rink against Neumann
College.
