Alternative Learning System (ALS)

Introduction:
The Alternative Learning System (ALS) is a free education implemented by the Department of Education (DepED) under the Bureau of Alternative Learning System which benefits those who cannot afford formal schooling and follows whatever is their available schedule. The programs provide a viable alternative to the existing formal education instruction, encompassing both non-formal and informal sources of knowledge and skills. ALS aims to open more education opportunities for Filipino citizens interest, capabilities of demographic characteristics, socioeconomic origins and status as well as addressing the needs of marginalized groups. The programs cuts the time needed to finish high school, hence, significantly cuts the expenses as well. Aside from giving hope to the less fortunate , it also provide opportunities to Out-of-School Youths (OSY) and adults elementary and secondary schools drop-outs, industry- based workers; housewives;maids;factory workers;drivers;member of cultural minorities; indigenous people and the disable/physically challenge. The Bureau of Alternative Learning System recognizes the multiple and challenging task of a mobile teacher. Unlike an ordinary teacher in the formal school, a mobile teacher operates in the community and does more than mere teaching. A mobile teacher goes through a whole cycle of tasks that start from the literacy mapping and recruitment of learners until their completion rights. Central to these responsibilities includes house to house visitations, determining literacy level of learners, conduct of actual learning interventions, material development, counselling, tutorials, networking, research, reporting and many others.

II. Current Trends, Issues and Problems in Education (ALS) Current Trends
Well, are becoming more engage by what their friends are doing instead of school actually. ALS is a non-traditional learning, this is relaxed learning system where the lessons are taught outside the classroom and learning sites can be a barangay hall, a church courtyard, a cockpit, under the shade of the tree or any other areas where learning can take place. Learning delivery can be deliver through face-to-face interaction, radio-based instruction and independent learning facilitated by DepEDs mobile teachers, District ALS coordinators (DALCS), facilitators and instructional managers.
