Amy Rauch Neilson, who began a blog in 2006 to share with others her battle with breast cancer and the support she received, died May 6. She is survived by her husband Don and sixyear-old son Theodore, two sisters and other relatives and friends. Amy was 43 and was a resident of Belleville for
more than a decade. Her blog was titled Its in the genes, and had 1,359 followers. A blog update that was posted on May 7 said there were 3,200 hits on Sunday, and more than 4,900 hits on Monday. Amy stopped writing the blog in March, but it was continued by her friends and supporters. The last entry was on Monday, the day after she succumbed. Shortly after being diag-
nosed early in 2006, her friends began a team that participated in the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure each May. The team calls itself Amys Walking Angels. The next

At its regular meeting on May 7, the five-member Belleville City Council unanimously adopted a resolution to apply for a state grant to inspect the citys sewer system. The types of upgrades that would be applied could range from a new lining for the sewer line, re-grouting and re-sealing pipe joints, or replacing the sewer line altogether. Upon the completion of the assessment project using a special camera, estimated by city DPW director Keith Boc to cost about $800,000, the city would establish priorities for sewer upgrade projects in the city. He said the maximum grant, called an S-2 grant, has a cap of $1 million and a requirement for a 10 percent match. Boc added that the funding for

More than 250 people were on hand Saturday to help the Friends of Michigan Animals Rescue raise money at its fifth annual Cinco de Mayo event. The fundraiser, which took place at the Formal Eagles Hall (check) in Ypsilanti, featured a Mexican buffet, live entertainment from Sole Survivor DJ Lonny Hafner and raffle prizes, including a trip to the Bahamas worth $2,600. Its our biggest event of the year, said Jessica Hassell, FMARs education coordinator. Its a fabulous night. We have great food, great prizes. The whole goal is to raise money for our animal shelter, Hassell said. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to providing food, shelter and medical care for our animals. Annual veterinarian bills for the group can run upwards of $50,000, so every penny counts. Were just very, very happy that weve had a great turnout this year, Hassell said. A request by representatives of the McDonalds restaurant at 10760 Belleville Road to add a second ordering station for its drive-through window and the addition of a new entrance and exit west of the restaurant was unanimously approved by the Van Buren Township Board of Trustees in their regular meeting May 1. When the current drive-through is
unusually busy during certain times of the day, vehicle traffic leading into the restaurant can stack up along Belleville Road. It is hoped the addition of a second ordering station would help eliminate this problem. McDonalds representatives said 72 percent of the business at the location is from the drive-through, compared with 70 percent average drive-through usage in the state of Michigan.
