The convention is now in the past, but the memories will continue to be revisited. Thanks to all who attended and made the weekend a very special time especially Diana Kirkpatrick, convention coordinator; Patty Ondrus, convention registrar and the steering com- mittee chapters, particularly my own Al- pha Delta Chapter. Many of you com- pleted the convention evaluation form and the comments were overwhelmingly posi- tivethank you! Your feedback is truly appreciated and all ideas and suggestions will be considered as we plan for the 75 th
anniversary celebration in 2013. What an event that will be! Plan to attendyou will want to be part of the celebration! It was an honor to see our chapter presidents walk proudly into the ballroom as they were presented at the Presidents and Founders Banquet on Saturday night. I want to say a heartfelt thank you one more time to the chapter presidents who served during the 2010-2012 biennium to build the future of our Society. I am looking forward to working with the 2012-2014 chapter leaders. Now we must continue to build our future. We will do that at the Chapter Leader- ship Development workshops on June 19 in Wilmot, June 20 in Kalida and June 21 in Washington Court House. It is my goal to have every chapter represented at one of these workshops. Please send your registration form, available on the website and in the last edition of The Voice, to Tammy Schroeder. We are in the electronic communication age. Please take a few minutes to visit our new website at http://AlphaDeltaState.weebly.com. Eileen McNally, our new webmas- ter, is to be congratulated on our updated state website. Also, this will be the last printed copy of The Voice that will be mailed to every member. Please read the article on page 5 that shares information about the electronic distribution of The Voice. We ask for your patience and understanding as we work through this process. The first ten months as your state president have been very busy and fulfilling! Thank you for placing your trust in me. I am reminded daily how much membership in Delta Kappa Gamma enriches my life. Please call on me if I can help or support you and your chapter in any way. Fondly, HONORING OUR PAST BUILDING OUR FUTURE Dr. Norma Kirby, State President THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! A sincere thank you for your part in making the 2012 Alpha Delta State Convention a great success! Diana Kirkpatrick and Dr. Norma Kirby The Voice of Alpha Delta State Page 3 June 2012 Forty-eight newsletters were selected for recognition and achievement certificates after meeting the DKG International guidelines. Many of the newsletters were well-designed, had beautiful graphics and many pictures. Some of the newsletters had innovative and interesting titles. The certificates were presented to Chapter Presidents in their convention packet. The newsletters were also rated on the Checklist and Rubric Assessment. Four were chosen for awards as out- standing newsletters. The first place newsletter was produced by Beta Lambda Chapter. which scored the most possible points. The second place newsletter award was given to Alpha Upsilon for their newsletter called Oops Scoops. Two chapters tied for third place: Gamma with Gamma Chapter News and Chi with Chi Chatter. Ann Todd presented valuable advice to workshop (Cut the Lard) attendees and provided a notebook full of ideas, sugges- tions and rules. Our attention to newslet- ters and their message to our members has helped promote our organization and our purposes. Rita Shardell bids farewell after announcing she will no longer be serving as Alpha Delta State Webmaster. Alpha Delta State has new web page Part of the definition of both the Internet and a website is interconnectedness. Alpha Delta State strives to be connected to all its members statewide. Towards that end, Alpha Delta State has a new webpage. The needs of our members were kept in mind as this new website was built. We tried to look at our site through the eyes of a member. What might they be looking for? How can we help? Every effort will be made to have the latest information, news, forms and contacts. If you have a question, we want you to be able to find an answer on our webpage, or be directed to someone who can help. Although there is a good start with this new homepage, it is considered a work in progress. Go to the website and look around. Give some feedback. What can be changed to make it better? What can be added? Is there something confusing that can be made more clear? You will find a contact form right there on the webpage. Fill it in. Tell us what you think. We want to connect with you. Help strengthen our interconnectedness. Of course, if you like something, wed like to know about that as well. To find us, you can do one of three things. First you can go to our old website. You will find a link there to direct you to our new website. You could go to the Inter- national website and be linked to the new web address. Better yet, bookmark the new web address as a favorite. The address is: http://AlphaDeltaState.weebly.com. Eileen McNally, Alpha Delta State Webmaster New state webmaster, Eileen McNally, tells members about the updated web page. Alpha Delta State dues for active members are only $7 and for reserve members are only $3. This dues amount was approved in 1985! It is astounding to think that for 27 years the Ohio State Organization has been able to provide services to members with- out a dues increase. In October, 1982, the Executive Board approved a mileage reimbursement of $0.17. In October, 2012, the Executive Board approved a mileage reimbursement of $0.17. This is just one of many budget cuts made in an effort to reduce spending. The budget presented and approved at the Spring Executive Board Meeting is lean. This budget will greatly reduce reimbursement for state officers and committee chairmen. Attendance at international and regional conventions are dramatically re- duced. Our quarterly newsletter, The Voice, will no longer be printed and mailed to members. Past state budgets have drawn upon savings to balance the budget, a practice that cannot continue. The proposed 2012-2013 budget is not balanced. Once again, this year it will be necessary to use savings to meet expenses. The Voice of Alpha Delta State June 2012 Page 4 EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION AWARDS PRESENTED During the recent Alpha Delta State Convention, three recipients of awards granted in February 2012 by the Board of Trustees of the Educational Foundation were recognized for their achievements. Linda Overstreet, Alpha Zeta Chapter, Fremont, received an award of $450 for her project, Bully-Free Is the Way to Be. The award will be used to purchase research-based literature, DVDs, activity cards, and other materials to create activities for students in grades K-5 to learn what bullying is, how and why not to bully others and how to help when others are being bullied. The Foundation awarded renewals to two Alpha Delta State members. Mary Kay Pieski, Gamma Upsilon Chapter, Tallmadge, was awarded a renewal grant of $3,000 for her project, Arts Enriched English Camp. At the camp located in Poland, the award will be devoted to music composition and recording of the original music com- posed by students attending the camp. Barbara Cleveland, Gamma Nu Chapter, Co- lumbus, was awarded $1500 for her project entitled Math Discoverys At Home Math Talk. This project encourages improvement and confidence in the math process of those students who participate in the project. The project encourages and assists Homeless/At Risk Students families to become involved with their childrens math education by creating a Take-Me-Home and Share math book program which en- hances and strengthens the Dowd Education Centers Math/Literacy Program. At its February meeting, the Board of Trustees awarded $134,910 to 60 different educational projects. Since 1964, nearly $2.6 million has been distributed by the Edu- cational Foundation in its efforts to improve, enrich, and encourage intercultural un- derstanding and educational excellence. In addition, Cornetet Individual Professional Development Awards granted at the February meeting totaled $23,163. These awards are granted to educators for the purpose of participating in professional seminars, workshops, lecture series, national certification, on-line courses, and other non-degree program opportunities that relate specifically to an applicants professional aspirations and/or current educational assignment. No Alpha Delta State recipients were named as awardees in 2012. Alpha Delta State congratulates this years recipients and extends continued sup- port for their efforts to enhance educational endeavors within the scope of each of the projects. Virginia Koch, Alpha Delta State Liaison, The Educational Foundation Friday, April 20, prior to the Alpha Delta State Convention, members toured the Ohio State House. Chris Matheny, guide, took the group to the corner stone of the State House where a time capsule is bur- ied. He shared the list of items in the time capsule. Members experienced many of the sites that are not encountered by a typical State House visitor. The highlight was the opportunity each member had to sit in seats occupied by the members of the House of Representatives. Mark your calendars for the Pre- Convention State House Tour on Friday, April 12, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ohio State House; prior to Convention. The Voice of Alpha Delta State Page 5 June 2012 Membership madness initiative introduced Members who attended the General Session at our State Convention, enjoyed seeing and hearing the M&Ms introduce the Membership Committees Membership Madness Membership Initiative. To meet the initiative requirements, a chapter must increase the chapters total membership by one member before March 1, 2013. Further details will be given to chapter officers in June at the Chapter Leadership Development Workshops. Chapters meeting the initiative will be recognized in The Voice and at the 75 th Anniversary State Convention in 2013. How do we attract new members, both actively employed and those retired? Hopefully, the ideas below will be useful to you in attracting new members: Invite non-members to chapter meetings so they may see who we are and what we do from an educational position. Invite non-members to be guest speakers on their particular area of educational interest. Write a congratulatory letter to non-members for recent accomplishments and include the Society membership brochure You and Us with local contact infor- mation. Invite potential members to lunch/dinner or a special event and be ready to share what the Society can do for them as well as sharing what it has done and continues to do for you. In effort to move into the digital era, Alpha Delta State will be providing The Voice in electronic version only. This move will save substantial monies in printing and post- age costs for a hard copy mailing of the newsletter. Various services are currently being investigated for mass distribution as e-mail security, unwanted advertisements and spam are primary concerns of members and the leadership team. Beginning September 1, 2012, the chapter president (or designee) will receive the electronic version of The Voice and will be responsible for forwarding to all chapter members. The goal is to ultimately e-mail the newsletter to all members. As in the past, The Voice will be available on the state website. Publication dates are set for September 1, 2012; January 1, 2013; March 1, 2013; and June 1, 2013 with deadlines for articles to be determined. Additional information will be available at the Leadership Development Workshops in June and on the Alpha Delta State website. The Voice of Alpha Delta State Page 7 June 2012 Now that weve experienced a convention at the Easton Hilton, it is much easier to visualize the large display of chapter photographs for Project 2013 when we celebrate the 75 th Anniversary of Alpha Delta State next April. Ten chapters have submitted their group photographs already. If your chapter is not among the big ten, now is the time to make plans. Chances are you are already thinking about interesting pro- grams and special events for your chapter in 2012-2013. Dont forget to include your chapters group photograph in those plans. Your executive board may want to set up the Project 2013 photo session so that it coincides with the meeting that commonly has the largest attendance. Digital cameras make taking the photo much easier even for a strictly recreational photographer. Remember the submitted photograph should not be larger than 8 x 10 and can be black and white or in color. The chapter name should be printed on the back in pencil. Please include a separate sheet with the first and last names of members in order of their arrangement. Present in person or submit by mail to Beth Archer, 1140 Ellen Drive, Zanesville, Ohio 43701. To be included in the state convention display, please submit photographs by February 1, 2013. Please do not email. The Project 2013 collection will become part of a 75 th Anniversary memorabilia collection after the convention. This year, Lydia Morgan, Delta Psi Chapter, founder and organizer of Cincinnatis annual Juneteenth Festi- val, a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, is one of those women being recognized. Charlene E. Greene, member and past president of Delta Mu Chapter, was honored April 4 as one of six outstanding Columbus women chosen to receive the 2012 YWCA Women of Achievement Award. Your chapter can be a special part of the 75 th anniversary history of Alpha Delta State. Just for this special anniversary, chapter members may be initiated at the State Convention. As you plan for your 2012-2013 DKG year, mark Saturday, April 13, as the date for initiation of chapter members at the convention. Please remember members are only initi- ated one time. If a chapter member is initiated at the State Convention, you would not conduct another initiation for her at a chapter meeting. Chapter presi- dents will receive details about the initia- tion at the Chapter Leadership Workshop in June. Alpha Chi Chapter is pleased to an- nounce a third generation teacher will be initiated at the state convention as part of the 75 th Anniversary Celebration!
