Nicola R. high flows Community

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources has advised the City of Merritt that they have reduced the outflows from the Nicola Dam as the expected peak inflows to Nicola Lake have not yet been realized in spite of the current weather trend. The Ministry reports that, at present, flood storage in Nicola Lake is adequate and the Nicola River is expected remain within its channel banks for the time being. Residents living adjacent to the Nicola River may experience further infiltration into the pipes and basements as a result of groundwater seepage and/or basement drain backups as the river will continue to run high for the next several weeks. The City of Merritt will maintain previously installed flood protection measures along areas of the Nicola River within the City until the threat of flood has ceased. Please be alert for potentially damaging flows or obstructions which should be reported to City Hall, 378-4224.

Thursday May 24, COSCO (Council of Senior Citizens Organizations) will put on a free workshop at the Florentine,2pm, open to the public. The workshop will address documents that people should have in place if they are not able to attend to their own affairs or make their own decisions about health care & financial matters, concentrating on before-death decision making. In September 2011 the prov'l govt introduced new legislation which altered Representation Agreement rules and also provided a legal document entitled Advance Directives. The workshop also deals with Advance Care Planning, an initiative of the prov'l Health Authorities, that encourages people to have conversations with their family and friends to express their personal values and wishes so that people will make appropriate decisions should an individual be unable to speak for his or herself. A Collettville resident is asking descendents of men and women in the Nicola Valley in the first two decades of the previous century to share with him their families passed-down memories and documents, textual and visual. Mike Sasges is undertaking this research project in pursuit of a graduate degree from Simon Fraser University. Mike is particularly interested in the memories and records of the First World War generally and the 1918 influenza pandemic specifically; the festivals and fetes and public entertainments of those decades; the First Nation land and rights agitation; and emigrant/immigrant experiences. The retired newspaperman reports that after a year of reading material in the public archives and preparing genealogies of the Village of Collettville families enumerated in the 1911 census of Canada he only knows what he does not know. I can see, for example, Ellen Ovington and her two sons by Matthew Dover Ovington dockside in Montreal in the spring of 1908 after crossing the North Atlantic and before boarding CPR transcontinental. She was going to Coutlee, she reported and the ships purser recorded. But was Matthew awaiting them in Montreal? Or Coutlee? I dont know. But I can see them again in the 1911 census.
