Jonathan Adler

95% CHIC + 5% HAPPY = THE DECROTIVE NIRVANA THAT I CALL...

...HAPPY CHIC

Adler was born in New Jersey in 1966 to an attorney and an artist. His contemporary childhood home was filled with modern furniture collected by his mother. He found his love for art and design at the age of 12 after stumbling upon a potters wheel at summer camp. Taking his love of design to the next level, he attended Brown University while taking ceramics classes at Rhode Island School of Design.

Adler began selling ceramics and vases, which made their way into major retail chains. In 1998 he opened his first store in Soho and started his company, Pot au Porter. 2002 was a big year for Adler, starting his own furniture line and taking interior design clients, as well as hotel renovations. So far he has a total of 12 stores nationwide, a major retail line, and a reality show.

When looking at Adlers designs, you see his unique style that mixes modernist ideas with bold colors and geometric graphics. It seems to be impossible to be upset when looking at a room so upbeat. As a designer, Adler is dedicated to bringing style, craft, and joy into each interior he encounters. His goal when creating a room is to inject the clients personality. He believes that you should design around what you love. In order to achieve this, his steps are to lay the foundation of good decorating and then punctuate with a dash of levity. You want your home to show who you are, make you feel good, and not to be a bore. Adler does a fantastic job of this with his formula to happy chic. This philosophy has also led him to write several design books about color and accessorizing.

Minamalism is a bummer
If your heirs wont fight over it, we wont make it

Dont conform to the norm

When it comes to decorating, the wife is always right. Unless the husband is gay

Classical foundation, playful punctuation

Jonathan has a true passion for inserting personal style into each space he designs. He defines personal style as having a space thats comfy but filled with stuff that has meaning to you and also goes on to say that personal style should make you happy and happiness is chic. In order to teach clients how to insert their personal style by accessorizing their home, he has three steps: find your look, follow the principles of arranging, bend the rules. Adler states that his clients lives, as well as his own, made him realize that there is a need for contemporary design with a realistic approach. He wants his interior designs to be something livable, as well as aspirational. He believes that dogs should be allowed on the furniture and your home should reflect you, your life, and your dreams. He likes the idea of using faces, animals and busts to show a quirky self.

Adler wants us all to see design as an outlet, and a mirror into the soul. His books and tips help readers to achieve great, functional style, and make their own rules. Conformity is a bore.

I believe that you should surround yourself with the stuff you love and you should do so with confidence
