HELPFUL HINTS & FAQS

Do not go to Mt. Bachelor without your bib numbers or lift tickets on race day. On race day, lost and found is behind the White House at the Les Schwab Amphitheater. After race day, contact mbsef@mbsef.org 541-388-0002. The road going UP to Mt. Bachelor is never closed. The road going DOWN from Mt. Bachelor is detoured through Sunriver during the race (except for pairs division). PAIRS If you are planning on doing the ski leg and the run leg, but not the bike leg, you should have someone drive you down Century Drive and drop you off near the transition area so you dont have to worry about parking. We want to make sure that you get to your transition before the biker. You will receive a Pairs Pass credential in your race packet that will allow you to drive down Century Drive and not be re-routed through Sunriver. The transition zone for the Bike to Run is right by the Original Pancake House on Emkay and Colorado. You cannot use a 2-Person Kayak unless you have registered as a Tandem Pair. INDIVIDUALS NEED TO HAVE AT LEAST 2 SUPPORT PEOPLE Only Individual Competitors may have support crew. One person for up at the mountain and one for in town. The support person on the mountain will have to drive the Sunriver detour. TANDEM PAIRS-WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Some races, tandem means that you can do each leg of the race at the same time. That is not the case with this race. In the PPP, tandem means that you can either use a tandem bike and/or a 2 person kayak. OPEN CATEGORY-WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Same as the Tandem except you are doing it as a team. So, a tandem bike and/or 2 person kayak is allowed. There are no age or sex divisions. HAND OFFS Nothing fancy. Just make contact with your teammates hand at the transition. Listen to the volunteers and ask if you have any questions about where you need to be before your teammate comes in to the transition area. WILL THE ALPINE OR NORDIC SKIER HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO DO THE RUN? Unfortunately the answer is No. Teams have to drive the Sunriver detour. 2 PERSON KAYAKS ARE ONLY ALLOWED IN OPEN TEAMS OR TANDEM PAIRS 2 PERSON CANOES ARE ALLOWED IN ALL CATEGORIES WHEN DO THEY CLOSE THE ROAD TO THE MOUNTAIN? Never. The road going UP to Mt. Bachelor is never closed. The road going DOWN from Mt. Bachelor is detoured through Sunriver during the race (except for pairs division).

ARE BIKE FAIRINGS ALLOWED? Yes. In Open Teams Only. ARE SNOWBOARDS ALLOWED? Yes ARE TELEMARK SKIS ALLOWED? Yes COURSE TIME? Ranges from 1:45 to four hours. SKATE OR CLASSIC? You can use either classic skis or skate but most use skate. 12 AND UNDER TEAMS Everyone on the team needs to be 12 or under to qualify to do the shorter version of the run. When they reach the aid station at Mt. Bachelor Village, instead of going straight, they will run down to the river trail and head left. The rest of the course will be well marked. At the Mt. Bachelor Aid Station there will be a sign that says 12 and Under with an arrow pointing to the river trail.

TRAFFIC & PARKING: All vehicles coming down from Mt. Bachelor will be routed through Sunriver to Bend after Pairs Division has started the bike leg, approximately 10:15am. The detour through Sunriver will take at least 50-60 minutes. The road up to Mt. Bachelor is OPEN all day. Use caution when driving up to the Mountain since there will be many cyclists on the road. Watch for and obey traffic controllers. PAIRS DIVISION ONLY will receive a hang-tag for their vehicle windshield to allow access straight through to downtown Bend, rather than detouring through Sunriver. Colorado Avenue will be closed from Columbia Ave. to Century Drive for the Bike/Run Exchange. Pairs will be detoured to the paved detour used for the Mt. Washington round about repair. Pairs will then proceed to cross Mt. Washington drive and be directed to go 7

down Yates to the Chandler round about. Parking is a little tricky. Best to scout it out the night before if you are not familiar with Bend. Or drop your racer off near the Bike to Run Exchange and then park. You can find street parking on Emkay between Columbia and Donovan (?). There will be event parking available in the Old Mt. Bachelor Park and Ride which is on the corner of Simpson and Colorado. There will be big event parking signs out for that lot.

Teams and pairs will need to tag teammates in order to start the next leg. Exchange volunteers will report bib numbers who do not comply. RESULTS: Race Results will be posted on www.pppbend.com the night of May 19th. DRAFTING RULES(These rules enforced especially for Elite categories.) 1.) Spacing -- all cyclists are responsible to maintain a minimum of three bike lengths of clear space at all times between you and the cyclist in front. Failure to maintain this spacing is considered drafting -- whether intentional or not. 2.) Position -- you must keep to the right hand side of the lane of travel unless passing. 3.) Passing -- in overtaking another cyclist, once you move into the three bike length zone, you must pass within 15 seconds. 4.) Overtaken -- once passed, you must immediately exit the draft zone from the rear, before attempting to pass again. Once you are passed, it is YOUR responsibility to maintain the required three bike length space to the rider ahead. 5.) Blocking -- consists of riding on the left side of the lane without passing anyone and interfering with other cyclists attempting to pass. This is strictly prohibited. 6.) Vehicles -- all rules above also apply (where applicable) to prohibited drafting behind a motor vehicle. PPP Drafting Penalty: Variable time penalty. A single offense is considered a violation of the drafting rules in distinct sections of the bike leg that provides a clear advantage to the rider. 1st Offense -- 2:00 minutes 2nd Offense -- 4:00 minutes 3rd Offense -- Disqualification 9

PPP Protests & Enforcement: The PPP will post a race official at the race finish line to handle any protests registered by athletes with regard to bike leg drafting or other problems. Athletes that wish to lodge a protest are asked to do so within 20 minutes after finishing. Ideally please raise any protests BEFORE the other athletes in question leave the finish area so the race official can talk to everyone involved. The PPP has course monitors on the bike route and will note clear violations of the drafting rules. The PPP will also take into consideration reports from athletes, spectators and drivers on the bike leg. But we will depend primarily on the honor code of all athletes to obey the rules as described. COURSE INFORMATION Alpine Leg (Sponsored by Mt. Bachelor) The course starts at the top of the Red Chair. There will be ski corrals for each start wave to place your skis. Please do not move other competitors skis, it is a first-come, first-serve placement for skis. The race starts with a 200 foot sprint (length may vary due to snow conditions) uphill without your skis, then put them on and ski down the LeeWay trail. You must obey the control gates, gate keepers will be monitoring the course. If you miss a gate you must reenter or receive a time penalty. The course is a beginner/intermediate run. The course may change due to snow conditions. Mt. Bachelor Snow Phone: 541-382-7888. Alpine/Cross Country Exchange Upon entering the Exchange Area, please check your speed and slow down before entering the chutes. Between the Red and Yellow chairs you will see five chutes. Each chute is labeled with a letter (A,B,C,D,E). The last digit of your Bib# corresponds to a specific chute: A: 0-1 B: 2-3 C: 4-5 D: 6-7 E: 8-9 This helps spread everyone out and helps you find your teammate and equipment easily. Please verify with your Cross Country skier what chute you have been assigned. Note: The same chute system will be used at the Cross Country/Bike and Run/Canoe Exchanges. Cross Country Ski Leg (Sponsored by Desert Orthopedics) From the Alpine/Cross Country Exchange the course is flat at the beginning around the West Village Parking Lot to Jays Trail. Down Jays Trail, left on Deveckas to the Woodys cutoff. Follow Woodys Way, take a left on Easy Back to the Woodys Way/Easy Back/Richs Range Junction, right on Woodys to the Old Maid and Common Corridor. The course is approximately 8km. Both Skating and Classic techniques are allowed. The course may change due to snow conditions. The Cross Country skier will have to take their skis off and run a short distance to the assigned bike chute at the Cross Country/Bike Exchange area. The chute system is the same format as the Alpine/Cross Country Exchange. Bike Leg (Sponsored by Bryant, Lovlien & Jarvis, P.C. Upon leaving the Exchange area, please proceed out of the West Village Parking lot towards downtown Bend for 22 miles. No drafting allowed. There will be car traffic between the Bike Start and the Sunriver Junction and after the 7th Mountain Resort to Colorado Avenue. There will be Race Volunteers to assist with Traffic Control at all intersections. Please remember to check speed at the roundabouts before turning onto Colorado and please BE AWARE of vehicles. The course is primarily downhill with one uphill climb after the Sunriver Junction. Parents may not ride with their children on bike course. ONLY those competitors who are doing the Bike Leg are to be riding on the course (extra riders impede safety). Remember to have your 10

Bib# visible as you approach the Bike Finish for the volunteers to call your number for your teammate or support crew to be ready. Run Leg The 5 mile course starts on Colorado Ave. and Emkay. The runners proceed along the paved path to Century Drive, turn left at Mt. Bachelor Dr. and proceed on Mt. Bachelor Dr. to the South Entrance of Mount Bachelor Village Resort. At this point, the trail changes to a woodchip/cinder surface and parallels Century Drive and the Sunrise Village/Mountain Gate/Braeburn neighborhoods. The course then doubles back around at the entrance to the Braeburn neighborhood, goes through the Mountain Gate development, then goes down to the Deschutes River Trail below Mount Bachelor Village Resort to the Bill Healy Bridge and downriver to the Canoe/Kayak exchange area. The Run Finish is on the northwest side of the river across from the Farewell Bend Park. The 12 & Under Team category will run a shortened course (see course map). The course will be well marked with white arrows or signs. Canoe/Kayak Leg (Sponsored by Sun Country Tours) The Canoe/Kayak leg will be a chute system based on your division. The course is .8 km upstream to the turnaround buoy under the Healy Bridge, then downstream 1.2 km around the island (stay to your right of the island), and back upstream to the Canoe/Kayak finish (~150 yards downstream of the put-in). Alder Creek Canoes and Kayaks will have rafts and guides to monitor the course and assist in an emergency. For safety reasons, only foot traffic of team & team support members (No bicycles, dogs, strollers or non-competitors) will be allowed in the fenced boat storage and launch area. Sprint Leg (Sponsored by Robberson Ford-Lincoln Mercury-Mazda) The final sprint starts at the Canoe/Kayak Finish and goes under the Columbia Street Bridge on a paved footpath to the grass Finish Arena in Les Schwab Amphitheater, approximately a mile. Only one team member may cross the Finish Line with the bar coded bib. Crossing the Finish Line without the bar coded bib may result in a disqualification. Team members may join the sprinter in the Competitors area of the Finish Arena. SUPPORT: Only Individual Competitors may have support crew. Individual support crews are not allowed to drive down the mountain (keep one crew member in town and one at the mountain). No support crew other than team member(s) for Teams or Pairs allowed.
