Delegation encourages council to consider revamping current arena in place of MREC

By DARRYL HOLYK s reported last week, a delegation of concerned ratepayers appeared before town council at its May 8th meeting. What follows is part two of what took place at that meeting. Th e delegation, including Herman Klassen, Neil Cameron, Jim Fossum and Eric Neufeld (who was unable to attend Tuesdays meeting) explained to Council their concerns regarding the Minnedosa Regional Events Centre (MREC) proposal. Klassen, as spokesperson for the delegation, indicated that his group would like council to gather more information and cost estimates on the needed upgrades to the present arena rather than just writing it offand focussing solely on building a new costly facility. Back in June 2007, Minnedosa Minor came to council asking them to consider a major upgrade for the arena. At the time, the upgrade was estimated at approximately $1 million. It was at that time, the council of the day, began pursuing the possibility of a new arena which has developed into the multi-use MREC. So what if it costs $2, 3 or 4 million? (to upgrade the present arena)? Th is still a far cry from $22 million (for at new facility), mentioned Klassen. Council has already spent close to $1 million on MREC. This money could have made big improvements on the present arena. The old arena has served this community for over 50 years. Dont mess with success! Th does not appear to be any ere excess demand for ice time and the school enrollment has been declining for years. Th mayor responded to this by explaining the situe ation in the community of Russell, where it was decided to redo their current facility rather than building new. They are currently at around $10 million. Theyre not finished yet, and they will still have an old building, said Orr. our current arena was an older building before it came here from Portage, and its been here 65 plus years. It is well past its best before date.

Matt Rapsky, leader of the TCS rocket club, and Principal James Sheppard launched six rockets in total. Rockets were launched from the west soccer fi eld at TCS and due to the wind, travelled west towards the schools. Most of them landed in the surrounding playgrounds but some travelled to beyond the school grounds. Emily Pearsons rocket was found in the parking lot of the Medical Clinic while Aaron Tulmans Magician touched down outside of the Personal Care Home. Th rocket club is in its second year at TCS and they e meet at lunch hours to make rockets for the launch. The club is also educational as members are taught about aerodynamics, which will determine how far their rockets will launch based on the rockets shape.
