GREENVILLE More than 100 people supported
the May 8 ceremonial groundbreaking of the advanced
technology center being constructed on Montcalm Com-
munity Colleges Greenville campus.
Before a representative group put on their hardhats
and scooped a few shovels full of dirt, MCC President
Bob Ferrentino addressed the attendees and stressed the
importance of MCCs partnerships with area businesses
and industries, city and school offcials, area hospitals,
four-year colleges and universities, local organizations,
and county, regional and state governmental entities.
It indeed takes us all working together to build a
better future for all of us, Ferrentino said. The end

Virginia Jaquays
LAKEVIEW Virginia Jaquays, 88, of
Coral passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012,
at Twin Oaks in Greenville.
She was born and raised in Lakeview.
She picked up potatoes
for many years for Gil-
bert Wheeler. She also
worked at Electrolux for
24 years. She enjoyed go-
ing to Howard City with
her friends at the potluck
dinners. She also enjoyed
the gospel music at the
Coral Baptist Church.
She enjoyed talking to
Delphine Jenkins, her special friend, every-
day.
Virginia was survived in death by her
children, Frank (Shirley) Jaquays, Marvin
(Maureen) Jaquays and Shirley (Bob) Ber-
gin; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchil-
dren and one great-great-granddaughter;
brother Jim Ostrander; and several nieces
and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her
loving husband, Newton Jaquays; parents,
Roy and Jessa (Green) Ostrander; sister, Di-
xie Ostrander; brothers and sisters-in-law,
Willard (Freda) Ostrander, Charles (Julie)
Ostrander; sister-in-law, Flora Ostrander
and great-grandson, Jason Baker.
According to Virginias wishes, a private
(family only) graveside service was held at 11
a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at West Pine
Cemetery with Pastor Burt Boes, of Coral
Baptist Church, offciating. Memorial contri-
butions may be made in Virginias memory
to the Coral Fire Department and the Action
Center of Howard City. Condolences may be
made online to the family at www.brigham-

Helping Hands gives spring update
Once again a big thank you to the entire community
for its ongoing support of Helping Hands. The fnancial
and volunteer support given to this ministry continues
to amaze the Helping Hands board of directors and all of
its supporting churches. 2012 represents the 22nd year
of service to the community.
The Helping Hands ministry continues to work dili-
gently toward an expanded vision of service to the com-
munity and toward its goal of building a new more ef-
fcient facility on its new site just south of the Howard
City VFW Hall.
Helping Hands asks the community to think about
some things. Its January and you have no heat.
Maybe no food. Perhaps you have lost your job or the
well that provides your water has failed. What do you
do? How do you help someone you know is in need in
these areas? Helping Hands wants to be able to serve
our community by being a greater resource to help with
these kinds of problems.
It is an expansion of the vision of the board and the
local churches that support the ministry that Helping
Hands expand their services and meet those types of
needs. To do this, and to reach its goal of a new facility,
Helping Hands seeks the ongoing fnancial support, vol-
unteer support, and prayer support of our community.
In a little more than one year, Helping Hands has ac-
quired a new building site, paid for the property, devel-
oped some talented people to assist in construction and
raised more than $28,000 toward their $150,000 goal.
Why does Helping Hands need a new facility? Many
reasons. Elderly volunteers must go up and down stairs
to get food. The layout is very ineffcient and most im-
portantly to fulfll the greater vision, a different facility
is very much needed so we can offer additional services
to our community.
Helping Hands is excited about the future and is ex-
cited about its second annual Miracle Sunday Service
that will be held June 10 in Ensley Park. More detail
will follow on this very important event in a couple of
weeks.
In the meantime, if you would like to offer your f-
nancial support to Helping Hands, your donations can
be made to PO Box 532 Howard City, MI 49329 or can
also be made through their web site at www.helping-
handshc.org.
Please specify whether you wish your offering to
be for the building fund or for general operations. Any
questions can be directed to (231) 937-6758

biomedical research experiences and results, and
Dean encouraged students to pursue one of the
numerous career opportunities in science. During
the presentation, Dean walked students through
typical experiments she conducts daily, culmi-

The Alumni of Howard City Schools
ready to celebrate event
In June of 1962, John F. Kennedy was serving our Country as
president, Ray Charles was mesmerizing audiences with his No. 1
Billboard Hit, I Cant Stop Loving You, and Al Kaline was chas-
ing balls in the outfeld for the Detroit Tigers with Ernie Harwell
in the booth announcing every game. This also was the same year
that the last class of Bulldogs would graduate from Howard City
High School. This year marks the semi-centennial of this event. The
former Howard City High School is located on the corner of Grant
and Edgerton streets in Howard City. In the fall of 1962, the build-
ing was renamed Tri County High School, upon consolidation with
Sand Lake High School. Through the years the building also would
serve as Tri County Middle School and most recently the Edgerton
Upper Elementary. The celebration for this landmark event is being
planned by the Howard City Alumni Association. The event will take
place at 6 p.m. on May 26 at Heritage United Methodist Church on
Kendaville Road in Pierson. The cost is $15 per person and reserva-
tions can be made by calling Vicky Paulen at (231) 937-5190.

According to a 2011 University of Michigan
study led by researcher Taylor Eagle, unhealthy
eating behaviors that lead to weight gain and
childhood obesity are much more likely among
children from lower-income households.
Fat adults. Its not news. America is a top tier
nation whose citizens are, by percentage, lets
just say it, morbidly obese. Fat. An extra 15
pounds on a 5 9 frame isnt what were talk-
ing about. Were talking people who are 50, 70,
150(!) pounds overweight. Look around. Tell
me you dont know 5 guys whose bellies ap-
pear at the corner a full two seconds before the
rest of their bodies round the bend? Adults are
doing something about it. But what about those
kids?
Poor kids. Theres some truth in every reason
overweight people use as an excuse for be-
ing overweight (I have my own). But the U
of M study found that as household income
declined, eating fried food every day doubled
(!), daily TV time tripled (!), vegetable con-
sumption declined, exercise diminished, poor
diet increased, and the percent of overweight
children increased. Read that sentence again
its astounding. The study compared socioeco-
nomic status and health-related behaviors of
children. The habits of 999 sixth graders from
four Michigan communities: Ann Arbor, Co-
runna, Detroit and Ypsilanti, were included.
Start xing the problem. Since its not just
poor kids suffering the symptoms, a solution
that includes education, the public assistance
system, and the cook, seems a good choice.
In school. School-based programs like Project
Healthy Schools, a program for sixth-graders in
Ann Arbor designed to reduce childhood obesi-
ty and its long-term health risks, show remark-
able success. Project Healthy Schools (http://
www.projecthealthyschools.org/) teaches
healthy lifestyle habits. Healthy lifestyles in
childhood lead to healthier adults, having less
diabetes and chronic illnesses, less risk of car-
diovascular disease (heart problems). I love this
report from a parent of one of the students:
my 6th grader is now Miss Healthy Eater. She
wont let me drive near a fast food restaurant.
She reads labels all the time, eats lots of salads
and fruits and never hesitates to comment on
the eating habits of mom, dad and little sister.
(Youre going to eat THAT??!!)
So support your own schools efforts at edu-
cating about good health, and minimizing the
availability of fat, our, and sugar loaded food
at meal time.
Buy healthy, assist with a Bridge. Everyone
loves fresh fruit, fresh veggies. And theyre
so much cheaper at farmers markets. So
urge your farmers markets to accept Michigan
Bridge Cards, the cards that people receiving
assistance use for buying groceries. Its a triple
benet when a farmers market provides fresh,
healthy, local food, puts local farmers to work,
keeps some of the prot local, and accepts
Michigan Bridge Cards so people of lower in-
come level who most need it benet. The
Fulton Street Market in Grand Rapids, at 1147
East Fulton, takes them. There is information
for your farmers market at www.michigan.
gov, or inquire at www.fultonstreetmarket.
org for help. Make it happen.

Osteoporosis in the News
I have just started to write a series of articles on the head, headaches, etc., but something has come up that needs attention.
Osteoporosis is a serious health issue that causes lots of suffering and may compromise ones overall health leading to death earlier
than expected. This week in the news and in The American Medical Association Journal important information has come to light.
Bone is dynamic. It is constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Somewhat like a home that needs maintenance, repair and
remodeling all the time. The current medical treatment for osteoporosis is use of Fosamax, Actonel, and Boniva. These medications
work by replacing part of the bone with an inert material which delays the break down of bone thereby slowing Osteoporosis
(They do not build new bone). The unfortunate part of this treatment is that it is likely to cause a serious bone condition called
Osteonecrosis. This means dead bone. The problem lays in the fact that this inert (dead) material may make the bones more britt le
over time. The worse news is that this inert material can stay in the bone for 18 months up to 10 years.
Up until now the recommendation was to start these medications as soon as possible to prevent osteoporosis. The word
Osteopenia was actually invented by one of the drug companies to identify individuals who were at risk for osteoporosis so they
could start using the medications sooner. Now the new information is that starting too early or staying on the medications for more
than ve years increases the risk of fractures, especially ones that have difculty healing.
For the last ve years we have been warning people about the use of these medications. Natural treatment for Osteoporosis must
included exercise. I once saw a 14 year old boy with osteoporosis in his leg after a fractured leg prevented walking for six weeks.
After just four weeks of walking, the bone was again normal.
Elimination of acid-producing foods (pork, pop, sugars, corn syrup, oranges, dairy products, potatoes, and tomatoes) is a must
for treatment and prevention of Osteoporosis. An interesting statistic is that the three countries with the highest milk and dairy
product consumption (USA, Australia, and Sweden) also have the highest Osteoporosis rates. Humm. Pasteurized, homogenized
milk contains something called Xanthane Oxidase which is very acidic. Raw milk or cultured milk products are better. It takes 400mg
of Calcium to neutralize the acidity in one cup of coffee. An acidic environment in our body speeds up the break down of bone.
Calcium citrate, 400-500 mg with Magnesium 200-250 mg, two or three times per day gives adequate
absorbable calcium. Vitamin D3, 2000-4000 units per day, is needed for healthy bone. There are many skeletal
support products on the market for additional minerals. Bio-plasma is a combination of 12 Cell Salts, all of
which support structural tissues. Homeopathic Symphytum 30 C, one per week, will help heal any micro-
fractures that are occurring. Homeopathic Calcerea Carbonicum 6C one per day with Herbal Hydrangea 2-3
times per day will reduce bone spurs and enhance the deposition of calcium into the bone. All of these
things support the natural production of bone and none interfere with normal physiology of bone. We have
had patients do the natural treatments and show from 3% up to 29% improvement in bone density in one
year.
If you are on the traditional medications, do not just stop them. Instead talk with your own doctor and
create a plan. Consider using the natural supplements and dietary changes to x this important health issue.
