Rebootyourcomputer.Thenrunthefollowing2diagnosticcommands.
Tip:Ifyouhaveawheelmouseor3-buttonmouse,youdonotneedtotypethecommandsintotheTerminal.Instead,copythecommandsfromthiswebpage andpastethemintotheterminal.Todothis,moveyourmousecursoroverthestartofthecommandwrittenontheWebpage.Thenpresstheleftmousebutton anddragthemousetilltheendofthecommandtohighlightthewholecommand;thenreleasethemousebutton.Thenpressthemiddlemousebuttonormouse wheelanywhereinsidetheTerminal.ThecommandshouldnowbeprintedintheTerminalwithouterrors.Nowpress<Enter>toexecutethecommand.

TheTerminaloutputafterrunningtheALSAinformationscriptshouldcontainsomethinglikethis: #ALSAVersion #Driverversion:1.0.24 #Libraryversion:1.0.24.1 #Utilitiesversion:1.0.24.2 IftheDriver,LibraryandUtilitiesversionnumbersarenotequal,thisprobablyduetooneofthefollowingissues: 1.OneoftheALSAcomponentswasnotsuccessfullyupgradedduringstep1inthisprocedure 2.ALSAwascorrectlyinstalledorupgraded,butawrong/oldkernelwasbootedinsteadofthemostrecentkernelversion.Inthat case,bootthenewestkernelversion(thatisavailableinthestandard/defaultUbunturepositories)andthenretestsound.

Copy&pastethefollowingdiagnosticcommandintotheLinuxTerminal,thenpress<Enter>.Thecommandstartswiththe commandcatandendswiththewordsound.(Donotcopy&pastethisdiagnosticcommandfromanemailmessageintothe Terminal,asthatwillonlycopypartofthecommand.)Whenaskedforyourpassword,typeyournormaluserpassword(nostars aregivenasyoutype);thenpress<Enter>again.

Inthisapplication,makesuretosetallchannelstohighvolumelevels.Makesurethedifferentspeakers(especially'Front', 'Master',and'PCM")areNOTmutedandNOTsettolowvolumelevelsinalsamixer.Movewiththeleftandrightkeysonyour keyboarduntilthe"Master"itemishighlighted(inred).Iftheletters"MM"aredisplayedunderthevolumebar,press"M"to unmute.Repeatwiththe"MasterMono","Headphone","PCM","Front","Surround","Center"and"LFE"items.PressEscwhen finished. IfHDMIoutputhasstoppedworking,mutingandthenunmutingtheSPDIFoutputinalsamixercancausethesoundtostart workingagain(Ubuntu10.10). OnsomeToshibalaptopmodels(T40,T43p,...R51e...),theaudioismuted,ifeitherHeadphoneorLineJackareNOTmutedin alsamixer.SeealsoALSAWikiFAQ[1].Also,ifHeadphoneSenseorLineJackSenseareunmuted,audioisdead(R52,X40). BydefaulttheSensesettingsarenotshowninGNOME.Achannelismutedinalsamixer,ifthereisan"MM"underthatspecific channel/volumebar. OnsomeToshibalaptopmodels,settingthePCMchannelvolumehigherthan70%inalsamixer,mayresultinclipping(for example:very"harsh"anddistortedsoundbothontheinternalspeakersandonheadphonesplug),regardlessoftheMaster channel. Problemwithaudioclipping HPLaptopsinthedv5,dv6,dv7seriesandsomeHPMininetbookcomputershaveastrangeprobleminUbuntu.Whenyouplug intheheadphones,youwillhearsoundviatheheadphonesandspeakersatthesametime.Thefollowinglinkshouldprovidea workaroundforthatissue: Problemwithheadphones OntheHPCompaqnx8220,youcansolvethesimultaneousspeaker/headphoneoutputissuebyenablingtheHeadphoneJack Senseoptioninthealsamixerapplication.

Reportifyoucannothearsoundthroughthespeakers,theheadphonesorcannothearsoundonboth.

Ifyouareusingadualbootsystem(evenwithWindowsandUbuntuinstalledonseparatepartitions),thenmakesuretosetthe soundvolumeinWindowstoahighlevelbeforebootingintoUbuntu.Alsomakesuretousethespecialfunctionkeysin WindowstomakesuretheloudspeakersarephysicallyswitchedONandworkingproperlyinWindowsbeforeinstallingand testingUbuntu.ThisstepisnecessarywithcertainToshibaTecralaptops.

IfsoundisnotworkinginbothWindowsandUbuntu,pleasecheckyourmotherboard'smanualtoseeifanyjumpersarebadly configuredormissing.Somemotherboardsrequireyoutoaddorreconfigurethejumpersonthemotherboardtoallowtherear panelsoundconnectionstowork.

IntheBIOS,resettheBIOSvaluestodefaultvalues. Ifsuchanoptionexists,changetheonboardaudiosettingintheBIOSfrom"auto"to"enabled". Ifyouhappentohavetwosound-cardsinstalledinyourpc,oneintegratedintothemotherboard-forexample:anhda-intel audiochip-andoneinsertedintoaPCIslot,thentryremovingthePCIaudiocard,rebootyourpcandretestsoundusingonlythe motherboard'son-boardaudiochip. IfyouabsolutelyneedtogetthePCIaudiocardworking,trydisablingthemotherboard'son-boardaudiochipviatheBIOS.Then retestsoundinUbuntu. SavethechangeintheBIOSandreboot.

IfALSAisstillnotloadinganydriverforyoursoundcard(forexample:aSoundblasterAudigyPCIcard)afterupgradingtothe newestversionofALSA,tryreseatingthePCIaudiocardintoadifferentPCIslotonyourPC'smotherboard.

SpecifytheexactmodelandmakeofyourPC(ifpossible)inthenewthreadthatyoucreatedatLaunchpadAnswersForum.
