Once you have formulated the topic sentence, the next step is to tell more about the topic sentence, giving the reader more facts about or examples of the topic sentence. Supports can be obtained by many ways, the simplest of which is by asking questions about the topic (who? what?where?when?why? and how?) Practice: Put questions so that the three sentences in each case are the supports of the topic.

1. 2. 3. -

Soya beans are becoming popular all over the world. They have always been popular in Asia. They are easy to grow. They have a high food value. Ginger is a traditional seasoning in China. The smoker must also pay for extra cleaning of carpets, furniture, and clothes. 4. When my friend Mai decided to get married, she ignored her parents advice. - she had been dating her boyfriend, Tuan, for nearly a year. - Her parents told her that if she married Tuan, she would not have a successful life. - She married him despite her familys objections. - They accepted him and the marriage.
Once you have selected a manageable topic to write about, you should set up a controlling idea about the topic. Then construct supports for the opinion or attitude expressed in the controlling idea. It is a good idea to write support out as sentences and list them under your topic sentence in outline form. Such an outline is useful in two ways: It provides a means for quickly checking your sentences to see if they deal with the topic, and it serves as a guide for checking whether the sentences are logically arranged. Practice: Study the paragraph below. write the topic sentence, and outline the support given in the paragraph.

Schools should offer courses to help students with the problems of employment. Such a course might begin with a discussion of the jobhunting experience, including how to use classified newspaper advertisements, employment agencies, and contacts with friends and relatives. This might be followed by practice sessions in writing letters of application and in filling out employment application forms. Students would then participate in job interviews staged in the classroom in order to learn the proper technique for answering questions as well as the

importance of personal appearance, speech, and manners. After these essential points have been discussed, the course might even deal with the problems of job adjustment, with emphasis on how to adapt to the duties of the job and the role of being under someones direct supervision. If schools offered such a course, students would be well prepared for the difficult task of finding a job and for the everyday pressures of keeping one.
Choose one of the topics you are interested in. Then, write the topic sentence, and list the support in sentence form. Topic sentence: ....................................................................................... Support: 1. ....................................................................... 2. 3. 4. ................................................................

Unity A paragraph is a group of sentences which relate to the topic and develop the controlling idea. If a sentence does not relate to or develop that idea, it is irrelevant/out of place and should be omitted. A good paragraph must be unified.
In our prisons today, some people are falsely accused of crimes. A solution to certain kinds of crime, restitution is becoming more popular and rightly so. It works like this. If someone is convicted of defacing or destroying property, he or she is required to repaint or restore the property rather than simply sit in jail a certain length of time. In another example, a person disabling a wage earner would be made partially responsible for that wage earners dependents until the wage earner has recovered. Another way of dealing with this criminal is to make him or her pay a fine. In other words, restitution requires the criminal to restore the damage to the person who has been hurt. The criminal will contribute something useful to society rather than simply sit in jail, being clothed and fed with the tax dollars of law-abiding citizens. Perhaps through contributing to society by restitution instead of being dependent on society by sitting in jail, criminals will be more likely to become useful, working members of society after they have paid for their crime. 1. What is the topic sentence? 2. Which sentence is out of place? Why? 3. Outline the supports. 4. Summarize the text Cross out any sentence that does not belong in the paragraph. And then summarize the paragraph One of my fondest memories from childhood is fossil hunting with my father, who was a soft rock geologist. He worked for a large oil company off the coast of Mexico for a number of years. I looked forward to the dismissal of school in June because I knew that in one weeks time my father would pack up our station wagon with our old tent, cooking gear, supplies, and all kinds of picks, chisels, and shovels, and we would set off into the Sierra Madre Mountains for a week of unbounded pleasure. After sleeping in the tent all night and eating a quick breakfast of hot chocolate and bread, we would set off up the mountain laden down with our picks and shovels to an outcropping that looked promising. As we chipped and scraped, coming upon the fossils common in the area, my father explained to me how the earth was formed and described the various geological periods the earth had gone through.

Actually, the earth has gone through four major eras. To this day I remember with pleasure the cool starry nights, the warm days, and my fathers present but unspoken love. Develop the idea of the sentence that follows in the way you like in no more than 100 words. Living in the house where it is now is convenient for me in several ways........................... ..................................................................................... ......................................................................................................................... ..................................................
