Notes from the Pastor: This Sunday we celebrate the ascension of our Lord Jesus into heaven. This marks the end of the period of redemption attributed to God the Son and also ushers in the new period of sanctification attributed to God the Holy Spirit. This feast celebrates the day that Christ, in the presence of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven. The Ascension occurred 40 days after Easter Sunday, so it falls on a Thursday, this year on May 17, 2012; however, in most dioceses in the United States, the celebration of the Ascension has been transferred to the following Sunday May 20 th, except for the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, and the state of Nebraska which retained its celebration on a Thursday and is a holy day of obligation. Congratulations to Max Weatherly for receiving his first communion this Saturday, May 19 th. Congratulations too to his family for successfully bringing Max up in our Catholic faith. His mother taught him herself and Max has demonstrated his knowledge of the faith and his love for God and the church. Their blessing is a blessing to all of us and at the same time a reminder especially to all our parents of our obligation to teach and bring up our children in our Catholic faith. On another note, I will be gone for three weeks from May 26 to June 14. I will be going to Spain with a group from Wichita who paid for my trip on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela (Saint James of Compostela). Saint James was believed to have preached in this area of Spain and our group will trace his footsteps up to Compostela, which is north of the border of Portugal. To be considered a pilgrim, one has to be able to walk at least 100 kilometers or around 62.14 miles. The group plans to cover the distance in about 7 to 8 days, so about 8 to 9 miles a day, to give us time to stop for prayer and mass, and enjoy each place that we pass and stop by. So pray for me and for our group. While I am gone, Fr. Eugene Grabner, many of you know him especially the members Knights of Columbus as he is their chaplain, will say masses for Girard and Arma on the weekends of May 26 and 27, and June 2 and 3. Fr. Paul Tran, a Vietnamese priest from the monastery in Carthage, will say our masses on the weekend of June 9 and 10. In case of emergency you may call Faith Paoni and she can call Fr. Adam Keiter. I thank all these priests for agreeing to cover for me while I am gone. God bless you all! Fr. We will resume our regular monthly meetings on September 19th. We invite all of the parish ladies to come join us on the third Wednesday of every month at 6pm in the parish hall. If you have any questions about joining Altar Society, you may call Judy Smerchek at 347-4646. Gods Grade Card As we move into these last days of school, we know that final exams are being given and soon, 8th graders and seniors will be graduating. Have you ever thought that there are other grade cards besides those given by teachers. God has a grade card waiting for each of us. He wont give it to us just yet, but someday, well get the news; good or bad. What will He grade us on? 1) How did we treat one another? 2) How did we deal with our parents throughout their lives? 3) How have we treated God during our lifetime--did we give Him the minimum one hour a week, or did we try to show our love in many ways? You know, it isnt final exam time yet for us. We have a chance to raise our grades. The semester (life) isn't over! Maybe we should start now!

St. Philip Neri--Role Model for Priests On Saturday, May 26, the Church observes the feastday of St. Philip Neri, who was born from a poor family in Florence, Italy, when the Renaissance was beginning and the Reformation as well. The year was 1515. He had a wealthy uncle who was willing to allow young Philip the chance of taking over his thriving business, but Philip declined because he wanted to give his life to God. He went to Rome at age 26 and spent most of his life there. He entered the seminary to be a priest, but at the end of his studies, he forsook ordination, and spent the next 13 or so years helping the poor in Rome. He persuaded many to become Catholic. At the urging of a priest-friend, Philip was ordained to the priesthood at mid-life. He founded the Oratorio for Priests. When things went wrong, he would say, Why don't we do something about it? And he did, by teaching his Oratory of priests to go out to the people and help them one-on-one to make their lives better. He emphasized that they encourage the people to make use of frequent confession and communion. He died on May 26, 1622, at age 80. Many of you might remember the ministory attached to this saint: One day he and a friend were walking down the towns main street. As he attempted to cross the street, he nearly stepped on a poor man lying there near the gutter. He turned to his friend and said, There, but for the grace of God, goes Philip. The Franklin Catholic Church, just south of Arma, was named for St. Philip Neri. Articles by Marcel Normand Immaculate Heart of Mary Novena Everyone is invited to join the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for their annual novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, June 7-15, 2012. Each evening begins in the St. Joseph Parish Hall at 7:00 with presentations by the IHM Sisters. Refreshments are served at 7:30, followed by a Marian procession to the Church. Exposition, Holy Hour with the novena prayer, and Benediction will conclude the evening. What a beautiful way to begin your summer: praying to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for all your needs and intentions! Come any day or every day. If you are unable to attend, go to sistersihmof wichita.org for the novena prayer. Totus Tuus Mark your calendars for the summer Totus Tuus program scheduled for July 22-27 at the St. Michael Parish Hall. Grades 1-6 will attend Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm and grades 7-12 will meet SundayThursday evenings. Registration forms will be in the back of the Church the two weeks before we begin, but as always you are welcome to register on the first day of Totus Tuus. We look forward to another great week of learning, worship and fun with your children!

St. Rita Feastday This coming Tuesday is the feastday of a little known saint, St. Rita. She was born in Italy in 1381 and is usually represented, both in statues and pictures, with a thorn in her forehead. She had a very difficult life, married against her will at age 12 and gave birth to two sons. Her husband treated her harshly and the cruelty only ended when, after 18 years of marriage, he was killed in a brawl. In the years that followed, both of her sons died and she was left widowed and alone. She always wanted to devote herself to God, so she applied to enter the Augustinian Sisters at Cascia. She was finally admitted and she began a life of penance and austerity. God blessed her with consoling visions and in 1441, after hearing a homily on the crown of thorns, she was afflicted with a thorn wound in her forehead. There is direct testimony to this event from her convent. She converted many to Catholicism through her prayers. She died at Cascia on May 22, 1457, at age 76. She is honored as the Saint of desperate causes.
